I've been thinking about the month of May for a while now. Can't wait, between the skiff and the canal, I better stock up on sleep starting now because May and June are gonna be filled with many days and nights for me to make up for lost time this year.

4.8 knots  that is smokin'

J Powers and I are currently negotiating with the Corps of Engineers on establishing a parking concession at the various lots along the Canal, to help alieviate the Federal budget crunch. There is already talk of not prinitng hard copies of the Canal tide charts for 2009. Stay tuned as free parking may be a thing of the past, if this flies ;)

It's not a parking license,it's a saltwater fishing license.
I am all for this license, I am hoping it makes folks who keep anything that bites reconsider their actions. Perhaps the money generated by such a license will fund more jobs to enforce said regulations.

Careful what ya wish for...
All ya have to do is look at the way any state does business.
Moneys appropriated will never make to the right hands.
They will go to the starved general fund. They may show all the money going to fisheries management but simply put less money will be appropriated by the particular state to conservation. The money for the C.O.'s and such will stay the same. And things will get no better. In a nutshell, it's just the states way of generating more income.
I would not be surprised if certain separate fee's will be born from this license program. For instance, in NJ we have to purchase a trout stamp to target trout.
We might have to purchase a SB stamp, a fluke stamp.....
There's already a special permit for tuna...
In essence, to a fair man a license program seems reasonable. We are not dealing with fair people here..

I look at Florida as the model I would try to emulate. They provide outstanding amenities for anglers and at the same time, they protect their species. It seems like a well thought out plan to protect their resources, thus providing insurance for their future revenue dollars.

Yes Florida is the best of all models for states to follow.Their ban on com. mullet fishing has brought back the species to record levels along with the fish that forage one em.They understand the value of the traveling angler as tourism is the biggest money maker in the state. On the other end of the spectrum Is the land of fruits and nuts.
Kalifornia. All licensing has gotten them is closed fishing area's..
Some of them the more productive area's for sport..
Politicians are greed montsers fueled by massive ego's see Blogojevich in Indiana..If you think your state will be like Florida good luck..It will never happen especially in these lean times..

IMO the best route right now is the registry..
A good way to get a accurate number of anglers..Once this is established perhaps we can have a real voice in how things are done.Pol's will listen to real numbers..
Baby steps..

The reality is we will not become Florida and I understand that. That doesn't mean I can't hope for it to happen.

I am more worried that people will try and pay for their license in #s of fish.

Well Thats a nice dream you have there!!

I tell you what we are going to get, ZERO!! This state has 0 money and they are just going to take it into the general fund! Just like they did with the fresh water Lic, Then make some stupid budget for the fishing with a fraction of the money they collected.

Uh macojoe, the parking fee post was intended to be a joke. No one is seriously talking about charging guys to park and fish ;)

You will need a Federal anadromous species quasi-permit this year, but it will be free. I hear there isn't much of a chance that Mass will institute a SW license for 2009, but Basic Patrick would probably have a better handle on it.
