It might take some time, but I think things could soften a bit. As the economy continues to suck, companies are going to have to attract buyers. If their transportation costs go down, they may reduce prices to increase sales.

I went grocery shopping today.
$109 later and I don't have much.
I put stuff back cause I couldn't or wouldn't pay the prices they are asking.
On the flip side Lobster is cheaper than boneless chicken(and milk).
Bread, Milk, eggs are off the charts.
I found myself buying things I could make 2-3 meals from.
If everyone shopped the way I did today then they would HAVE to come down on prices or start throwing everything out.
Something's gotta give. It won't be me this time.

Are they going to also make the containers bigger again? I really miss that extra 2 (and the other 2 from the first reduction) "servings" in the edy's ice cream container

Most transportation companies are rolling back fuel surcharges but the lag in price decreases slows increasingly through each step of the supply chain. By the time food prices drop fuel will rise again.

I read an article about this phenomenon. Food industry packages less volume for the same price. Its inflation in one of its more obscure forms.

Anybody into bargain meat & poultry from Davis Sq/ Porter Sq area should no longer purchase any beef, chicken, lamb or pork from any other supermarket except McKinnons. Prime cuts (delmonico, NY Strip, Filet Mignon, Porterhouse) damn near %50 cheaper than @ shaws. The Chicken discounts are even more. They also carry rabbit if thats your thing.

I bought four choice cut strip sirloins from BJ a couple of weeks ago. Nice and thick. I was pleasantly surprised. Not something you'd get at Morton's, but after some careful grilling and my orange marmalade, brown sugar and mustard coating prior to cooking made it all rather delectable.

I'm wondering if it has to do with the cost of fertilzer which may have been impacted by rising fuel costs. Since fert. is a 1 time expenditure, the falling fuel prices may not have any impact.

There is a huge variation in choice grade meat. Some shops pay good attention and tend to select the upper end. Bigger buyers like SandS don't seem to care as much and the quality is all over the place. I actually like good aged choice over some prime. You can get it at whole foods. Real prime isn't easy to find any more outside of a good steakhouse.

Don't try to eat a lot of red meat anymore, but if I do it's as good as I can find. If you're going to ingest that much saturated fat it might as well be good :)

I was really ticked of yesterday when I went to get lobsters for our New Years Eve tradional dinner.
For months they have been $3.99 lb.
All of a sudden yesterday they are $7.99 lb.????????????????
Not gonna happen.
I just can't wrap my brain around that. I am sure more people than me wanted to have lobster and won't now.
They could have sold tons of then if they kept the price low.

the price of food is not going to go down period. the staples of the rest of the world are rice and wheat. now being made into ethonal gas. saw a price of perrerage farm bread for 3.99 yesterday at shaws. the% of what you spend for staples in your food are not going to drop. chourico at 4.99 a # is mind blowing. crafty and i are going hungry.

Gas is up almost 20 cents a gallon since New Years Day. $1.51 January 1. $1.69 today.

WTF does Russian natural gas have to do with light and sweet crude? Any freaking excuse. I love how the futures market--speculation on the price of crude that is still in the ground--can affect the price at the pump right now :doh:

I have watched specials on the aging/drying out process and find it very interesting. Slice of just a sliver and your right into some awesome meat. Emeril Lagasse chats it up quite a bit.

Spence you don't have to buy the whole rack in the case do you? In Hingham at times there looks like thier maybe 15 prime ribs in the drying case. Some that I can see with my glasses and best eye squinting I can muster have a weight and price attached to the end of the cut. I always assumed you bought the whole piece and not just say three or four ribs. Do I understand that correctly or can you buy three or four ribs?

Not sure how interested in it you are , but a great book about meat is The river cottage meat book. This book is really good, goes from cows, pigs, chickens, duck , geese , wild game and everything in between. He explains where all the cuts come from, how long to hang, dry aging vs wet aging and butchering etc. He talks a lot about what to look for and why in free range and oraganic raised animals and what these defintions really mean compared to meats from animals raised intensivly. Then he breaks down cooking them from roasting, braising, etc. . Really cant say enough good things about this book and it was only $20 something.

Usually meat is aged in large pieces and cut to order. I'd assume you can purchase just what you want, I've only bought from Whole Foods that way.

In the past we've got a few fillets or strips, never a whole cut.
