View Full Version : power rods
stiff tip 12-15-2008, 05:52 AM last fall i finely :wall: bought into a 10" lami super surf w/ a dawia 5000 emblem reel ....very nice combo it casts plgs like a rocket .....BUT after fishing w/ it, i want to add 3" to the butt section :smash: to help balance me to the rod..what i need is a good rod doctor to do job.hint:drool: hint . i know other peeps on this site have the same combo ...whats your opinion on your rigs .. are you balanced w/ your combo
wheresmy50 12-15-2008, 08:12 AM If you only want balance and not necessarily length, you could put lead in the butt section. Worked for me on 2 rods. I used egg sinkers and line Total cost for both rods was under $7. Made a big difference in comfort.
ProfessorM 12-15-2008, 10:21 AM so are you saying you wish you had the 11'er Dave?
Flaptail 12-15-2008, 10:22 AM All that just to be able to cast as far as me with less costly equipment? I'll give you a couple lessons if you want. hehehehe:laughs:
Talk to Numbskull, George is a master at that kind of thing.:btu:
Once you get that rig balanced you might be able to cast as far as I can!:hf1:
numbskull 12-15-2008, 01:25 PM I'm no master, but I extended mine 2" (because I'm an idiot and built the butt too short). It was pretty simple. You just need a broken blank of somewhat similar taper (doesn't have to be exact, I had a snapped GSB96m that worked ). Cut a section to slide up inside the butt of your new rod 4-5", you can adjust for any difference in taper with a few wraps of tape on one end, rough things up, and use a good epoxy. Trim to final length after it dries (don't cut it to length first because it will slide further inside the rod when lubricated with epoxy than while dry-fitting). Put a layer of cork tape on to bring it back up to the same diameter as your original blank, then overwrap with another layer. Pretty easy to slide a foam grip on instead if you prefer. Be glad to help if you want.......though I'm sure you can find someone better.
stiff tip 12-16-2008, 05:28 AM 1st i would not add weight . or a wooden dowl to balance ,thats not the problem . to properly fit the rod to the reel and to me i need to add 3-4in to the butt to balance the combo . paul NO i still like the 10ft but if i was to build it , it would be 10 -6 .6in cut off the butt....why ???? i,m 5 71/2 i like how the rod performs at a shorter lenght...... flap face.... stick,, your cheaper rod reel and custom weighted 2 1/2 oz plgs ,,, plus that 6ft 6in bigfoot body, up your kazoo!!!!!! thanks george i could use some advice ......marry christmas to all hope you get what you deserve ???????
Flaptail 12-16-2008, 05:45 AM Did I touch a nerve perhaps?:hihi:
spence 12-16-2008, 07:45 AM I agree, balance is more about the geometry than the distribution of weight. While they're obviously related when at rest, in motion there's a difference.

I love the scientific talk :bl:
Lami actually makes extensions for the SS series.I think so they could make 13 ft heavers.
They slide over the top if I am not mistaken.Which is too late in your case.I have extended the butt on a some gator blanks( a basically indestructible glass blanks from FLA) that only came in 8 ft lengths.A old blank in the butt epoxied in and rapped to make the transition smooth. Was a old bridge rod for me.Built with the help of a few old friends who are now gone.I have thousands of fish on it.Would lift 12lbers over the rail.Never a problem.
For a spinner I actually like a shorter but length than most.I feel it is important for the butt of the rod to clear my body when I cast.I hold the rod off my hip so balance is not the issue as if I held the rod under my elbow.Which would kill me all night with a rod of 10' or longer..BTW I basically fish exclusively with a 11' rod.Paired with the 300 VS it could double as a anchor.
You wanna laugh..
My canal set-up is a 10' Breakaway 1209 That I taped the Saltiga 6000 on below the reel seat..I think the butt section on that was 28 inches to the center of the seat.Tape doesn't bother me as all of my reels are taped on.I also just rapped the old seat up with tape.I had intentions of cutting it off but it does not bother me. I figured why run the risk of cutting the blank and ruining the rod..Thats the way it stays to this day. It's a good thing I fish in the dark..
NIB's world..
