Raider Ronnie 12-17-2008, 08:09 PM Jim Gordon,
Jim was a major studio guy in the 70s, recorded with everybody!
He was also the drummer for a few of Eric Clapton's bands (derek & the dominos)
Jim co wrote the song "Layla" with Clapton (Jim wrote the piano 2nd half of the song)
Unfortunate Jim is/was NUTS !!!
Beat his mother to death with a hammer because he "kept hearing voices in his head) he's still in prison to this day !

Raider Ronnie 12-17-2008, 10:40 PM Guitar players.
This is a pretty good mix of Dan's guitar solos. (played pretty well)
Most are the work of Larry Carlton (who of anyone was close to being a full band member)

Skunk Baxter did the work on Reeling in the years.
Raider Ronnie 12-17-2008, 10:50 PM Bass guitar.

rexhamer 12-18-2008, 11:22 PM Great stuff. Steely Dan are my 3rd favorite group of all time behind the Beatles and the Smiths. They were #2 while I was in college in the 70's. Can't Buy Me A Thrill was the first record album I ever bought.
Recent stuff is a little too jazzy for me, but their earlier music is classic. I think it was Denny Dias along with Skunk Baxter doing the guitar work on the earlier albums.
"Is there gas in the car?
Yes, there's gas in the car."
The Dad Fisherman 12-19-2008, 12:08 AM Way to monopolize a Thread there Ron......:hee:
ProfessorM 12-19-2008, 09:24 AM yes denny dias. I would have mentioned it but no you tubes of him. I looked. I knew Ron would have fun with this one.
Raider Ronnie 12-19-2008, 10:12 AM Way to monopolize a Thread there Ron......:hee:
Hey,
I only "monopolized" the drummers they used.
I haven't even started with some of the great sax players, back up singers, keyboardist/piano players, ect.....
Mr. Sandman 12-19-2008, 10:21 AM Aja is a Fantastic album.......Front to Back
:agree:
I named first Dog Aja after that album.
SD has always been one my favorites since college.:smokin:

mosholu 04-10-2009, 05:25 PM I think they are the only band whose output got better each time out from the first album to the last (at least in their first incarnation).
ProfessorM 04-10-2009, 06:33 PM When you have talent and surround yourself with talent the sky is the limit
Raider Ronnie 04-10-2009, 07:18 PM Another great Larry Carlton solo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AslDzpaCURs&feature=related
You got some great taste in musicians Paul !!!
Larry is one of my favorite guitar players.
Lots of people it's about popularity and not talent, Larry Carlton is one of the most talented guitarist around !
ProfessorM 04-10-2009, 07:46 PM Yes he is and I own just about everything he ever did. From the theme songs of Hill street blues and Who's the boss to so many collaborations on others albums to the many, many solo albums he has put out. The consummate studio musician. You would be hard pressed to find a guitarist with his resume. He literally can do it all, and has
one for you

ProfessorM 04-10-2009, 07:52 PM one more for you Ron

rphud 04-12-2009, 06:58 PM Carlton and Skunk, don't hardly get any better than that. Amazing to me that each album was so different and better. Can't really think of anybody else that could do that. Most bands I have the first two albums and then done, not them. Stopped at Guacho though.
ProfessorM 04-12-2009, 07:21 PM I always wanted to hear Larry do an album with another great player and much his equal Lee Ritenour and when they finally came out with one, Larry and Lee, I was a happy camper.
Raider Ronnie 06-25-2009, 06:09 PM Just realized these guys are doing shows @ the Wang center next month.

ProfessorM 07-22-2009, 07:32 PM Have fun Ron. I am sure it will be great. Let us know how it was.
Raider Ronnie 07-23-2009, 07:45 PM AWESOME show last night !!! :grins:
Played the whole Aja album, and as an added surprise the whole Royal Scam album, plus many other songs.
Some things that stuck out to me.
John Herrington on lead guitar was awesome, though Becker played a lot of lead stuff and is an incredible player also.
The 3 female backup singers were awesome !
Keith Carlock is a very gifted drummer but lackes the grove of Bernard Berdie & Steve Gadd (he plays like a white guy !!! )
ProfessorM 07-24-2009, 11:01 AM Sounds great. I was really surprised how much lead Becker played when I saw them. They don't hire any bums. There is only 1 Steve Gadd:uhuh:
