First, you need to be willing to travel at a moments notice, Check!
2nd, need to enjoy the harsh winter weather,Check!
3rd, need to have a fishing buddy who is as insane as you are, Check!
Oh yeah having a very understanding wife helps too.

TO and I decided we wanted a little more Steelhead action and decided to head back to Ny. The weather was a little more than we asked for with sub zero temps and plenty of snow. Luckily we did not care and neither did the fish. I will let the pics do the talking.

The first day we hooked a lot of fish. The problem is landing them. We both had some oppurtunities at some quality fish but they always seem to find a way to win. The best part for me and many others is just getting them to bite. Also they almost always put on an aerial display before pulling the hook or breaking you off so you usually get to see the fish before you loose it. Tony, however was able to land a slob on his 8 wt. We estimated the fish in the High Teens. It was an absloute bruiser and it had plenty of battle marks to prove why it got that big. The fish actually had a few flies and hooks still attached to it.

I was able to land a nice female after that to get me off net carrying duty.

On one of Tony's fish I had my camera out and decided to put on the video mode and just happened to get a quick clip of a large Steelhead jumping.

With the air temp hovering around -12 and the water temp around 33 degrees the steam was coming off the river in huge clouds. It was pretty cool seeing the steam coming down river and I took a few nice shots of some anglers across river.

I am a little mad at this shot. It would have been a good one but the steam coming off my fingers makes it appear ghost like.

Tynan,
You guys are wacko.... and welcome to the club! Did you have to remove your gloves to take the photos? The ultimate sacrifice in those conditions. Man that fishing is tough - if you can survive winter steelheading every other type of fishing is a piece of cake.
That steelie is huge.

thanks but Tony needs some credit too. He took some nice shots as well.

Dz, my fingers only got cold once. I usually don't wear gloves. But since the fly line was freezing it was causing ice build up on my finger tips from stripping. Once we get a fish in we are so pumped that you don't even feel the cold.

Kevin, if you double click the images in the black box after the initial open they open to full size so the don't look so pixelated.
