When will they stop.......

Teixeira agrees to $180M Yankees deal

NEW YORK – The New York Yankees reeled in another prime free agent, reaching a preliminary agreement Tuesday with first baseman Mark Teixeira for $180 million over eight years.

A person familiar with the negotiations disclosed the agreement, which is subject to a physical. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal was not yet final.

Teixeira's deal raises the Yankees' offseason spending spree to $423.5 million. Just last Thursday, the Yankees completed agreements with two pitchers, giving CC Sabathia a $161 million, seven-year contract and A.J. Burnett an $82.5 million, five-year deal.

The Yankees, preparing to move into their pricey new ballpark, will hold the four largest contracts in the sport. Third baseman Alex Rodriguez has baseball's highest deal at $275 million over 10 years, and shortstop Derek Jeter is second at $189 million over 10 years.

When they go another 4-5 years with this huge payroll and nothing to show for it.....maybe then they will realize its more about chemistry and "TEAM" than about having the highest paid ego's in the game!!!:tm:

Been there, done that. Now spending more. It will only stop when it means less money for all, yes ALL the other owners. That's the way MLB works folks.

Can't hardly wait to listen to 850 and 890 next week. Let the perpetual misery rule the airwaves.

Pretty Good actually....Its now proven that the yank-mees have unlimited funds and are now in the position of using the rest of MLB as their Farm System....God I Hate Them :wall:

This binge may result in pushing the other owners to invoke a restrictive salary cap for MLB. Another sport greatly lessened by greed, by both the owners and players....

And let's not forget agents.....Boras makes 18 mil on Tex's deal........

Where's he going to play? Manny had problems playing left at Fenway, where anything over your head is stopped by the wall---can you imagine him in that huge left field in the Bronx? Posada can't catch any more and is slated to be their DH. They already have a bunch of terrible defensive outfielders. They could sign him and trade Matsui, or trade Posada and let Manny DH. If they trade Posada, the fans will want to get a rope and string up both Cashman and Hank Steinbrenner.

The trouble with an All Star at every position, and 3 or 4 All Stars in reserve, is giving all of those All Stars enough playing time. Clubhouse chemistry there can be a probelm, and Giradi isn't Torre when it comes to steering a steady ship in the clubhouse.

The Yankees didn't sign Texeira, Sabathia and Burnett to screw the Sox, believe it or not. They signed them to fill pressing needs--starting pitching and a gaping hole at first base. Two things that the Sox are pretty well set for. Their best pitcher from last year retired, Wang is coming off an injury, Joba is still a head case, and Pettite's future is up in the air. They let Giambi walk, so without Texeira, their starting first baseman would have been someone named Nick Swisher.

They don't need Manny as much as they needed those 3 signings.

All they did was essentially replace old money with new money, next year more contracts come off the books, Damon, Matsui, Nady and then they will buy next years free agents as well, who needs a farm team when you can just buy all the free agents.

Best statistic for the whole mess is that the Yankees' luxury tax bill is only $141,000 more than the entire combined players salaries for the Marlins. Not that Hank cares. Probably proud of the fact. Other interesting stat is that other than the two Red Sox titles nobody over eighth place in total salaries has won the world series since 2000 (last time the Yankess won). Oh yeah, this years two teams were 10th (Phillies) and 28th (Rays).

Their TV contract pays for a lot, something a lot of teams don't have the luxury of. They could go get another 20 mil a year guy and then be even with last year. Doesn't seem any different than any other year. I just hope they end up where they have been the last several years.
