I can't say for sure it is going to be for New Years, but I think I have made up my mind to, gulp, quit smoking.

My "resolutions" are the same every year.
That's not because I fail to achieve them, but because I was successful in achieving them.
Let me explain.....
We make resolutions to"not do" something for the coming year. Most resolutions involve something that we really like and isn't good for us. (that covers most stuff in a guys life)
Human nature tells us that if we are told not to do something, we HAVE to find a way to do that very thing. Think about our rebellious youth! If you have teenage children, you know this first hand.
Instead of trying to force myself to "not do" something that I know I will fail at, I focus on trying to "do" something that I haven't done before, or wasn't successful at in the past.
The best part on my variation of resolutions is unlike traditional ones where you can fail at any moment (sometimes RIGHT after midnight), I have the entire year in which to succeed. Plus it doesn't have to be anything eloborate, it can be simple, like learning to tie your own flies, learn to fish a new lure, discover your own "honey hole" or take a friend fishing that has never done so before.

Think about it: Instead of dreading the possibility of failing your old resolution, you can succeed at your new one.

In any case, I would like to wish you all a happy, healthy and prosperous new year.

I have a New Years resolution I am super good at making since I make the same resolution every year (with varying degrees of success) That of course would be to lose weight. That one is always on my mind after the almost month long Thanksgiving to Christmas pig out! :)

1. Surf fish more 2. Surf fish more in the a.m., ie hour before sunup. That is a very, very productive time to fish and I need to get my butt out of bed, something I have never been able to do! 3. Use plugs and other artificials more. I plan to use at least one needle, swimmer or darter at least once per trip for a good amount of time. Fish more in a wet suit.

Did it...

Just shy of a month now. Bugs the crap out of me sometimes but so glad I did. Pi$$ed I went through so much trying to get here.

Only thing harder for me to do was 1) See my kid sick & in pain. 2) Not quit day job to go fishing when I KNOW people are nailing large! (OK, maybe quitting smokes was 2nd hardest).

Mostly, fish more - I wasted a lot of the valuable Spring run - such as it was - working...

I'm not making that mistake again, I'm gonna do it acording to Hoyle for me - start with the trout opener, move into schoolie warm-ups, then sight-fishing for blackfish on light tackle 'til the cows come back home right after the tog season closes.

I also have a new blackfish spot to try at a UDL in the Spring...

Ahhhh...life is good...:humpty:

Steve and others...
Thanks for the encouragement. I have decided it is time to do this. gave up alcohol and drugs many years ago and am sure if I make the decision it will be a success. I have not really "tried" to quit smoking before and have been sick of being out of breath etc etc etc for quite some time. I am pretty sure when the current carton is done so am I.

I have the same problem of getting up early.I have about a 80 percent chance of going out at 10 pm an lasting till 5 or 6..
It's starting to really kick my butt though.
I have about a 30 percent chance of getting up at 3:30 to fish that last part of the darkness...Not a morning person.
Each dawn I die.
I also have to agree if u ask me the best time to fish for large fish is the last 2 hrs prior to sun up..
Just the opposite of you with the plugs.I plan on using eels more this year..
Not really a resolution, it's just something I have been planing on as soon as I stop fishing(still Blackfishing)
I'm going to quit smoking myself any day now..
I have been gearing myself up for it for a while now this time I plan on making it stick..I had it beat last spring but I opened up the door with one smoke.I should have known better.I quit drinking 13 yrs ago this April..

I plan to keep a log book and track migrations better. I missed some good nights this fall, but the nights that were on, were awesome. I want to fly fish more and get more confidence in that arena as well.

I would love to get to Cutty and maybe Montauk at some point...

I lost my printing job this year and now I have an opportunity to go back to school to become a LPN. The Program is one full year and I dont think I'll have a lot of free time plus it's 60 miles away.
It was a real gift to have free time for fishing this summer and I took full advantage. Following Fish-addict up and down SC wore my spikes down to nothing : ) but they are ready and waiting for next season every chance I get.
So I guess my resolution is to give it hell for 2009 and get my LPN license. Fishing will be more of a reward but I would like to do more fishing at first light when I can. Watching the sun rise over the water stays with you during the day and makes you feel more productive too.
