View Full Version : Quitting smoking? check in here
thefishingfreak 01-01-2009, 08:29 AM If you want to check in here, this might give us some sort of acountability. place to vent whatever.
ok so after 23 or so years of smoking I'm trying once again to quit. Been on wellbutrin for a week , now I just have to double up the wellbutrin. I have a couple pounds of gum. I have quit a couple times with it. once for 8 months.
Woke up this morning and I had one butt left. Man I couldn't stop thinking about it. Do I smoke it? It's the last one. I swear. blah blah, All my isims. I flushed it down the toilet.
Day one:err:
thefishingfreak 01-01-2009, 08:42 AM I tell you you what sucks.
I feel like I did not have a choice to be a smoker or not. My family smoked everywhere. In the house. In the car, I grew up as a smoker from prabably day one. I remember sitting in my grandparents little living room with the door closed and the air conditioning on in the summer and both my grandparents smoking in this little room. My mom blowing smoke in my face cause she thought it was cute. I never smoked in front of my kids. I don't smoke in my own house. I go outside. I do smoke in my car but never if the kids are with me.
24 years smoking. I just figured it out.
I started smoking at 13 and went for about 20 years, I'm over 10 off. Was at 2 packs a day. I quit a few times during that 20 but would pick it back up and have my cowboy killers riding shotgun again before I knew what was happening. I finally had had it with the smell, taste, ashtrays, etc - all the bad things that you know too well. Went cold turkey - tried a smoke a few years back with an old friend (American Spirit - mmm) and almost coughed to death, so I'm finally sure that I'll never be back on'em. The best advise I can give you is if you are to be successful you really really have to want to quit, not be quitting because you think you should or for someone else. I mean deep down in your heart and head you want out. Just look at it one hour at a time, one day at a time. Win all these small battles and it'll add up.
I grew up in the same environment as you with many people smoking around me, so I know what you're saying there. Good luck, stay strong and true. Good job flushing that last nail.
BigFish 01-01-2009, 09:31 AM Mike...I spent my life hating cigarette smoke! My Mom has smoked all her life and all I can remember was jamming my meals down my throat at dinner before she lit up or the hot summer days in the car with the damn cigarette smoke, or the Christmas family movies and my Mother predictably sitting with her pack of butts, lighter and ash try while we tore open our gifts!! I always hated the hell out of it....its what I hate most in life! I was also always afraid of my Mom getting sick from it and dying....well.....she was diagnosed with Emphasema a couple months ago. She has quit.....for now....too late but what can you do? Stay strong for your kids Mike.....be around for them as long as you can and as healthy as you can be. They will be better for it! Good luck!:kewl:
nightfighter 01-01-2009, 09:31 AM Yup, this sucks.
I'm getting the medium patch this afternoon. I know I can't do it cold turkey without some help. I'm about a pack a day, when driving a lot or on the boat. Less when busy with work. Planning on trying to cut to two a day to wean with the patch. When I get past the physical addiction, I'll be OK. But without weaning, I'll be a total @#$%^^&&. This way I'll only be a bear to be around. I do want to quit. My wind is awful. I figure I'm only a week away from feeling like crap and coughing up all the chit the cigs are keeping down.....
Swimmer 01-01-2009, 09:40 AM My doctor gave me this high blood pressure patch in 1990. The name on the patch was Catapress TTR. When individuals who wore this patch to help thier high blood pressure smoked they became very nauseous and would throw up if they smoked or stayed in area of heavey smokers for just a few minutes. I put it on after dinner at the station one night and went back out by the desk. Had to be four people there smoking. Ten minutes later I was sick as a dog from the smoke. Never had another butt. Four packs a day. There was a study on this and it never became a common treatment. Worked for me. Oh yah, no alcohol until your sure you kicked it.
nightfighter 01-01-2009, 09:45 AM Oh yah, no alcohol until your sure you kicked it.
Got that covered...last was Kentucky Derby Day. Twelve years ago this year. So giving the butts up is a little overdue......
thefishingfreak 01-01-2009, 09:59 AM Got that covered...last was Kentucky Derby Day. Twelve years ago this year. So giving the butts up is a little overdue......
Ya same here. Was 2 years sober for me back in november.
I'm gunna try to keep a water bottle close bye, they say drink tons of water.
Slingah 01-01-2009, 10:10 AM been smoking for 26 years...same story as you Mike...exactly..I have stopped for short periods a few times....I'm giving it a whirl again now, I have had maybe 6 cigs in the last 10 days..so no excuse for me not too...I can feel the urge has slowed way down.
Good luck Mike & Ross.....
Backbeach Jake 01-01-2009, 10:37 AM I smoked for over 25 years. At the end I was smoking 3 packs a day. If I can quit, 15 years now, anyone can. But it isn't easy. I used Nicorette, gum and Altoids. You gotta get mad at the butts, product of an international drug cartel. They monkey with the tobacco to make it more addictive so you remain "loyal". I think the reason that Nicorette helped is that it was a "cleaner" source of Nicotine. Sorta tapering off the high octane additives. Then less and less until finally done. Then Altoids. Good luck you can do it!
Tagger 01-01-2009, 10:46 AM Look at your watch , 1 second . 1 puff . 1 second of weakness . or 1 F it moment . I'll just have 1 . Your all done . Your mind will play tricks on you . You'll be smoking in your dreams . You'lll gain weight . You'll be a grouchy bastard.. and its all worth ,, Best thing I ever did for myself was quitting a 3 pack a day habit 20 yrs. ago . Its also the hardest thing I ever did by far . The physical part isn't as hard as the Mental . Its great not to be a slave to the tobbacco industry. Wait until your off the butts a while and a heavy smoker is in close quarters . Dammm , Did I stink like that smelly guy ? Yes you did ... If I can do it, you all can .. Just don't give in .. take it very personal .. Your in a fight for your life .. Good luck all ,, I'm pulling for you ..
Tagger 01-01-2009, 10:50 AM Oh yah, no alcohol until your sure you kicked it.
That one is huge !!!! .. A couple of drinks a normal person says F it .. I quit drinking so I could quit smoking .. They go hand in hand .
tattoobob 01-01-2009, 11:31 AM Good luck guys I know you will need it, no mater how long I quit for I always end up smoking again, stress and life's problems is always my down fall.
You have a higher power ask him or her to remover the addiction and be thankful for what you have, Don't stress over the things you can't change.
Swimmer 01-01-2009, 12:11 PM That one is huge !!!! .. A couple of drinks a normal person says F it .. I quit drinking so I could quit smoking .. They go hand in hand .
Your so right. When I was smoking a six-pack equalled twenty butts. I"ll be pulling for everyone.
ProfessorM 01-01-2009, 05:17 PM Good luck guys . It must be tough. I hate quitting anything.
saltfly 01-01-2009, 05:40 PM Good luck to you all trying to stop.I did it in the navy when butts were $1.10 a carton at sea.I carried marlboros in the right and kools in the left shirt pocket, and a pipe in a rear pants pocket.Cold turkey 11/2/73 steaming out of Cheseapeake bay heading to the Middle East.YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!
FishermanTim 01-02-2009, 12:53 PM If you want even more incentive to quit? Think of how much you spend on those "coffin-nails" per day, and do the math.
If you're a 2 pack-a-day smoker, and smokes are $6.00 a pack, that's $12 a day, for 365 days, an that's $4,380.00 a year!
Think how much fishing gear that would buy?
I quit roughly 28 years ago, but I wasn't really "hooked" at the time.
I was smoking about a pack a week, but as a very athletic kid, I noticed a decline in my performance, and chose running and breathing of (at the time) looking cool.
Many of us started out of peer pressure, and unfortunately some of our peers won't be as dedicated or sympathetic to our attempts at quitting. For those that REALLY REALLT want to quit, stick with it. Remember, you didn't become hooked after one smoke, so quitting may take more than one attempt. Keep telling yourself that you WILL SUCCEED, and develop a group of friends/relatives that you can rely on for support.
GOOD LUCK in the new year, and I wish you all success in your decision to quit!

Take this one a step further guys.....Put a jar out in your house and everyday throw what used to be your cigarette money into the jar......Buy yourself a VS after a few months, or a fishing vacation somewhere at the end of the year. Give yourself some extra motivation....and a reward for doing it.
nightfighter 01-02-2009, 01:14 PM Paying for the patch first...
thefishingfreak 01-02-2009, 01:16 PM Day 2. so far so good.

thefishingfreak 01-02-2009, 09:04 PM lets do this ff...day 2 fo' me too
Ok, I'm wit you..:musc:
thefishingfreak 01-02-2009, 09:16 PM this weekend will be easy. I have none and my 3 kids are here. So were not loading them up in the car to go get butts.
It's going back to work monday that will be tough. It will be easy for me to bumb a smoke there, and within 12 seconds of some poor judgement I can have a lit cigarette in my mouth then just say ohh-- eff it.
thefishingfreak 01-02-2009, 09:18 PM and I threw my ashtrays and lighters in the trash also.
nightfighter 01-02-2009, 10:15 PM Patch is good. Put it on this afternoon, no cravings....til someone asks how it's working... pleasantly surprised with how well it is suppressing crave.
basswipe 01-02-2009, 11:31 PM 6yrs done with the butts after 22yrs.
Wellbutrin was my ticket to freedom.
I know I'll never smoke one of those damn things ever again. Not ever.
thefishingfreak 01-03-2009, 07:25 PM 3 days :musc:

JohnR 01-03-2009, 10:13 PM Mike, Ross, Matt, and anyone else doing this - sincere good luck. It sucks. I'm 4 weeks down now. I used all kinds of motivation, from my health, to being around for my son and not dying off in my 60s like my father and his father and fathers before that. I also felt that if I was going to fish harder and better to go with getting "wiser" thank I sure as ^$*# better quit that crap!
I basically locked myself in a room for a few days, tried cold turkey, and getting close to losing it I found some old commit lozenges from a previous attempt which took off just enough of the edge. Still want one though!!!
i'm trying to quit now. hardest thing i've ever done. i commend you all for your efforts
nightfighter 01-03-2009, 10:42 PM Patch is good.
JohnR 01-03-2009, 10:46 PM Do it now while you have the excuse of being young and dumb. You're supposed to know better when you're older. And short of never starting, nothing better you can do than quitting when you are young... Wish I had
cheferson 01-03-2009, 11:05 PM Good luck guys. Ive quit a couple times, once for 5 years. Ive been chokey free for a bit under a year now. This past time i quit by smoking exsctasy cigs( no nicotine) for 3 weeks . Good luck and start working out more now so you dont pack on weight.
Raven 01-04-2009, 06:19 AM this...
think about nicotine ..the drug itself that is so addictive...
it was the only insecticide that successfully eliminated
the cotton boweavil (sp) an insect that even DDT wouldn't phase or any other insecticide for that matter.
that being said... on to health...aspects
when your on the drug nicotine it puts your immune system on full alert status or at level defcon 4 ..ok
in order to fight off it's strength... then when your body no longer has it in the system... the body is confused ...because it wants to go down scale to defcon 1 status
but it is hesitant to do so...
be aware,
that you may now require more vitamin C
or other vitamins (ie better nutrition) to keep cold viruses at bay since your immune system is no longer running at full throttle.
Good luck everyone
Sea Dangles 01-04-2009, 08:06 PM If NIB can quit anybody can.....
I give you guys a week at best.

thanks all for the well wishes
jeffthechef 01-05-2009, 08:35 AM good luck! give it your best shot. i've been smoke free for a couple of years. the toughest ones to put down were when i was tippin' or fishin'. it got easier every day. don't get discouraged and think about the payoff....more years to fish!
thefishingfreak 01-05-2009, 05:13 PM Made it thru work no problems. Couple cravings here and there. I feel really good this time. not constantly trying to convince myself to "just have one", Romancing that one cigarette. I'll have one like a reward because I've been good..... Not this time. those thoughts are gone.
I feel better allready I can take these HUGE deep breaths that would surely cause a coughing fit only a week ago.
Chewed so much gum today my jaw and head hurts though..
Day 5
saltfly 01-05-2009, 05:46 PM KEEP GOING YOU ALL CAN DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!
tattoobob 01-05-2009, 06:03 PM Good luck guys, I'm not quitting yet maybe after I go thru these 2 cartons I have in my truck I will. I am an off and on smoker, when I feel like stopping I just stop then a few years later I have one and bam I'm on them again.

Day 5
Mike,
To give more incentive , this season I'm going to be enforcing the NO SMOKING RULE On my boat !
Tagger 01-05-2009, 06:49 PM Good Going Mike ,,, Those cravings only last a few seconds but they're maddning .. They get further and further apart until you don't get them anymore, but its tough .. especially if other life problems arise .. When you get the feeling rub your fore finger and your thumb together and picture those 2 resin sacks (lungs)you have getting pinker..
nightfighter 01-05-2009, 08:28 PM Thank god for the patch. It was weird in the van today though, kept reaching to light up unconsciously....oh yeah, I'm quitting that. Let the head games begin.........
Bocephus 01-06-2009, 10:24 AM Im 35 and have had a pack a day habit since I was 16. Heading to the hypnotist again next week, I tried it 2 yrs ago and it worked great, no side effects, no freakouts, but 6 months later I had a few more beers than usual, and started back up. I very rarely drink now and when I do I only have 3 or 4 tops, so Im hopeful this will be it. Ive had 3 other friends do the hypnosis thing and they are still smoke free, several years later.
Bronko 01-06-2009, 11:50 AM Been off them 3 full years this past New Years. I was about 1/2 - 1 pack a day smoker from age 21 to 35. NYE 2005/2006 I had really bad Bronchitis and couldn't have smoked if I wanted to, the bronchitis lasted a week. I had been thinking about quitting so this gave me the opportunity, I made it my resolution. It was really hard, but being sick really helped. It gave me that 7-10 period that most people struggle with. I stuck with it and had some serious urges, but I was able to battle through them. 3 full years later (and 25 lbs of added weight) I really do feel much better. I would lend my support to those trying, stick with it! If I can do it, anyone can.
Good Luck!
thefishingfreak 01-06-2009, 08:52 PM going strong. Can't sleep and nightmares from the wellbutrin. I been thru worse
The cravings aren't bad.
Good luck guys. We're all pulling for ya!
jimmy z 01-07-2009, 05:45 AM I'm giving it a shot as well. I did ok, stopped for over a year and a half, but went back a year ago. I'm tired of it.
But what I'm doing as well, at the same time, is watching my food intake, and I'm exercising as well.
A day at a time. I'm just sick of 'em, again.
thefishingfreak 01-07-2009, 08:38 PM Day 7... Thats 1 week.
Haven't touched them. Haven't slept the past two nights either but I haven't smoked. Thats the important part.
hope the rest of you are still at it. :musc:
Tagger 01-07-2009, 08:44 PM Congrats Mike ,, keep your chin up .. keep swinging .
Slingah 01-07-2009, 08:46 PM I crumbled...keep up the great work FF....
Starfish 01-07-2009, 08:51 PM Helping my good friend at work do it cold turkey. Its hard to watch, she walks to the door like shes gonna smoke even with no cigarettes. The certain triggers in your daily routines must be so difficult. I convinced her to join my gym so she can get into shape and not gain the weight from quitting and then regret her awesome decision to rid herself of that nasty habit.
Good Luck to all of you!
thefishingfreak 01-07-2009, 09:05 PM I crumbled...keep up the great work FF....
Hey thats allright tomorrow is another day.
Progress, Not perfection..
Squid kids Dad 01-07-2009, 09:14 PM Keep it going guys..You can do it
JohnR 01-07-2009, 10:06 PM Slingah - jump back in the game
I'm over a month now...
basswipe 01-08-2009, 06:29 PM What JohnR said.
Seriously bro if I did it,you can.You can get off the butts too Slingah.
Ask your doc about Wellbutrin.Don't let them push Zyban or Chantix on you.Its all the same.I'm telling you the gods honest truth,Wellbutrin works and the generic will cost you next to nothing.$14 and I've been free for over six years.
Eddie commands it dammit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tagger 01-08-2009, 08:34 PM I crumbled...keep up the great work FF....
Jump back on the horse .. You got all winter .. You want to be in great shape come spring ..
thefishingfreak 01-08-2009, 08:54 PM yeah I tried the buproban and the bupropion with the same effect. Failure.
This time I have wellbutrin. I don't know if it's my frame of mind or what but its quite easy this time. I am not thinking about them all day long. I reach for my butts all the time but I just chuckle.
I can't sleep for sh*t. two hours at a time tops. up all night watchin the clock.
It's been a long relationship.. I'll be glad to see it go!
nightfighter 01-08-2009, 08:56 PM Yup.Sleep is all efd up....crazy dreams, lots of them, and I remember them too...just not the kind of dreams I would choose if I had a menu.....
thefishingfreak 01-08-2009, 08:58 PM yes very graphic nightmares here too. cold sweats and all.
I look at it as detox
gone fishin 01-08-2009, 11:55 PM Hi Mike - I quit many years ago. I had a three pak habit and know what you are going through. Keep up the battle, It is well worth it. Sleepless nights will pass. Son Jeff was told his heart attack was directly related to the smokes.
jimmy z 01-09-2009, 05:56 AM Still going. I had a stress filled day, Thursday. But did not succumb, :).
fish4striper 01-09-2009, 09:21 AM Good going Guys ,keep it up. It's tough but well worth it. I did it cold turkey a bunch of yrs back after smoking since I was a teen.

thefishingfreak 01-10-2009, 07:44 AM Another day, fella's. Strong strong!:wavey:
Thats right Day 10 for me.
I do think about picking up again. I'll just smoke 1 a day. Yeah thats it I'll be one of those people who only smoke on the weekends. Or i'll only smoke when I fish. Yeah thats what I'll do :smash:
The mind is a terrible thing
thefishingfreak 01-10-2009, 07:48 AM I also set up my bank account to automaticly withdraw 30 bucks a week into a savings acount. thats only about 1/2 of what I smoked, but this way I can at least see some kind of gain for my effort. Plus it's sort of another way to be held acountable as I do not have the money available to smoke any more.

Tell me about it! I quit drinking 11 1/2 years ago, and I think it was easier than this.:D
I know, strength is gained, when the temptation is overcome.
And strength in numbers, and accountability to another helps as well.:btu:
stcroixman 01-10-2009, 08:06 AM I saw this thread and want to wish everyone good luck with their quest.
Take it 1 day at a time, excersize, drink lots of water, read, whatever. I smoked over 15 years, both cigs and weed. It's been something >10 years since I quit both. I've got asthama to show for all that.
Just think of the money you can save for fishing!
You'll know you're on your way when you forget the exact amount of time you've quit.
Tagger 01-10-2009, 09:43 PM Clock watchers ,,,, turn your clock away, so you can't see it if you open your eyes.. worked for me .. I use to do the countdown until the alarm went off ..
jimmy z 01-11-2009, 05:21 AM I got rid of the old lighters. I don't believe in "yets".
No options for me, this time.:btu:
Stay strong fella's.
jimmy z 01-12-2009, 04:46 AM Just checking in. How's everyone holding up?
Another day, smoke free. :kewl:
thefishingfreak 01-12-2009, 06:28 AM same here day 12.
I think about them constantly it's amazing how your mind wonders. I reach for them thank god they are not there or I would have lit up allready..

Smart move, dump all the ashtrays and lighters, too. Everything that has to do with butts. 12 Days:jump:, keep it up.
Slingah!! , get back to it! Nothings easy that's worthwhile! Free yourself from the little tyrants.
saltfly 01-12-2009, 08:24 AM Just a word of support. As an X i know Keep it up you CAN do it.Slingah,it's ok get back on the horse :lama:[lama]and move on Don't Look Back.Look Ahead, that's what's in front of you.
Tagger 01-12-2009, 08:34 AM When I quit, they said (heart lung ass.) after 5 days you were not physicly addicted any more .. To me the mental was the nut to crack .. I remember, I'd be pissed at myself for starting again . Then I'd wake up and realize it was a dream . The tobbacco industry wants you on the hook . I remember I used to get this deep cough from the bottom of my lungs and this brown lungy would come up . The back of my teeth would get brown crap on them that only the dentist could get off .. Looking back it was pretty disgusting ,, and I was young and in my prime ... wasted . If some of this applys to you ,, It will all go away .. just hang in there .. Matt ?
stcroixman 01-12-2009, 11:18 AM Keep up the good work, men. It isn't easy to quit, but many accomplishments in life aren't easy. Keep yourselves busy!
Good Luck

thefishingfreak 01-14-2009, 05:39 AM 14 for me :hee:
There getting easier
Backbeach Jake 01-14-2009, 06:24 AM You're right, Tagger, the Superloogies are something else. I used to think of them as cast out demons, hork one into the toilet, and wave it goodbye. One less connection to the butts, gone. Soon they stop coming up. Keep up the good work guys, you're free now but you have to keep fighting those things. Good work so far.
BasicPatrick 01-14-2009, 10:02 AM Hey all,
I just found this thread.
It is the morning of day 9 for me. Using the gum and even though the box states 9-12 pcs per day I am only using 5-6.
So far it isn;t as bad as I thought but Frek said it in one of his posts, I think a lot has to do with where you are in your head.
Anyway...cool thread and I will check in.
Oh yeah, the worst thing so far is my teeth and gums hurt like hell.
thefishingfreak 01-14-2009, 12:34 PM I had to stop chewing gum as a substitute I was giving myself a headache. I got some sugar free root beer barells {hard candy} at wallgreens I can eat like 10 of them an hour they don't hurt your teeth and there pretty good.
tattoobob 01-14-2009, 04:50 PM Mike I used sun flower seeds last time I quit, watch out for the salt though
jimmy z 01-14-2009, 06:14 PM Thanks Jimmy Z...day 16,143 for me!:hihi:

You have to be careful substituting other things for cigarettes .. What if every time you wanted a butt you had a cup cake instead ..

I have the same type of obsessive/compulsiveness, too much of anything.

Yea ,,, Because thats the way you been dealing with stress the last how ever many years you been smoking . Actually Smoking a butt will make stress worse. Try replacing that habit with another .. Try to fart . Quitting smoking you have to deal with these things all the way down the line . Thats why I think its the hardest, but most rewarding thing I've ever done .. Wish I never started .

Hi John, Thanks ...And good luck to you.
We met at the Hab's Mem party in Middletown..We were both standing outside the door, puffing away.
It's been less than 2 weeks and reasonably good circulation has already returned to my previously frigid, anorexic hands.
FishermanTim 02-18-2009, 11:12 AM Keep up the good work, and remember that as tough as it is to quit, the payoff in the end will definitely be worth it.
I quit back in '79-'80, but at the time my habit was only a pack a week, so stopping wasn't as difficult, but the addictive nature is strong.
When I was "finally" over it, I felt great. Mind you, at only a pack a week, I had already noticed a drop in my stamina and endurance and was getting winded doing physical activities that I had loved for years.
That was my "wake up call". I hated not being able to do what I loved due to the effect of smoking. (All this in my late teens!)
The best advice I could give would be to keep at it. You may have a "relapse" but hey, you didn't start smoking 2+ packs right from the start, so quitting is never as quick or as easy as it is described.
Good Luck and Good Health to all!

Crafty Angler 02-19-2009, 08:48 AM Ummmm...so Mike, how's the Welbutrin working?
I've been giving it some thought lately - I'd really like to grow old enough to be even grumpier than I already am...:hihi:
Out side of the health risks, the sheer price alone is enough to give ya pause any more - pretty soon it's gonna be cheaper to just smoke the money...:hs:
I'm doing an honest deuce a day and yeah, I know how bad it is - and the fact that they juice cigarettes with additional nicotine makes it even worse.
I'm smoking Diet Merits but the time is at hand to deep-six 'em altogether, I'm thinking -
Guess I oughta start at Page 1 of the thread and work on my resolve first -
Crafty Angler 02-19-2009, 09:15 AM Well, **** it.
Read the whole thing from P. 1 so it looks like I won't be the Lone Ranger anyway -
I turned 60 a little over a month ago and never really thought I'd see it honestly - my dad died at 59 from the form of lung cancer most often attributed to cigarette smoking.
From the day he was diagnosed to the day he died was exactly 10 weeks. It still makes me well up - gotta tell ya that I still miss him every day.
So at 60 I figure that I've been a smoker since I was 15 or so - that makes 45 years.
Let's see how I do - I'm gonna try to wean myself off, I was actually in a research group when the patches 1st came out and it killed maybe 75% of the desire -
If I start today, I'll make my goal 1 cig an hour - that'll cut me by 60% just as a start and I'll work my way down from there.
My wife wants to quit too - she's done it cold turkey - - once but fell off - that way if we both do it will mean support at home and support at S-B too -
Okay...here goes...
Hi, my name is Crafty -
I have a problem...:(
JohnR 02-19-2009, 12:14 PM It's hard Chuck but it is so bleeping worth it.
My dad died when he was 63 and had a triple bypass when he was fifty something. If I am going to pass the average life expectancy of the men of my family I had to:
A) Not be an alcoholic - successful - I have less beers in a whole year now than I did every few days in my youth
B) Quit smoking - in progress.
C) Lose weight - that is next
I need to do these three so I'm around for a long time for me, and more importantly, my kid & family...
BasicPatrick 02-19-2009, 12:52 PM Just checking in...
45 Days without a smoke....woo hoo...
I am down to 5 pcs of nicorette gum per day and am a bit ahead of the schedule the gum program laid out for me. Just like Freak I am chewing other sugar free gum as well and have gum wrappers in my pockets and laundry and where the butts used to be. The car is even starting to smell good when I get in!
I tried dieting and am struggling with that...doing ok but still getting late night urges to snack. I made a decision a week ago and went out a joined a local gym where some friends work out. I started and although it has been hard to make the time, I am doign it.
I do have to respectfully disagree with Tagger. Quitting smoking will be the second most important thing I have done for myself. With a little luck on March 11 I will celebrate 14 years "clean". My longer friends on this board know I had a very bad life involving nothing but multiple trips to detox, court rooms and all the classic signs of substance abuse as a young adult. I still regularly attend NA meetings and do a lot of volunteer work in that area of my life.
Good luck to all and I look forward to the day I can peddle the canal and not run out of breath!!!!!!

Hi Patrick
Congratulations on your 14 yrs. I have 12 myself, sober.
And this cigarette thing is an addiction, and as you know, when one addiction is removed, something has to fill in that void, otherwise it will come back. I think that's where some fail. Something positive has to go in it's place.
The difficult part is quenching the desire. That snack thing or junk food thing is just a substitution, and over time, can get out of hand as well. The snack thing is not a positive substitution, one can say it is fundamentally evil, because it puts someone in a sad or unhappy state from putting on weight.
Wisdom is the key, and filling the body and mind with everything that is good. Good food, good snacks such as fruits, and exercising.
Dwelling on the accomplishments that have been attained helps me keep a positive attitude.
Easy does it, everyone.:kewl:
thefishingfreak 02-19-2009, 08:06 PM Good deal guys.
Crafty you take the wellbutrin for a week ,one pill a day. then you just quit. cold turkey if you will, and then up it to two pills a day. It really takes the edge off even with other things you tend to get stressed over it helps. you'll just glide thru them nice and calmly. well for me at least.
The desire is still there. I'm at the point where I say "wow - I don't think I've thought about a cigarette all day"

thefishingfreak 03-04-2009, 06:38 PM does anyone find it gets easier after some point?
I got two months and it's still an addiction. I can smell them a mile away and I'm about a half second from bumbing a smoke sometimes..but I just remind myself how much time I have into it and that I would have to start all over again at day one. I think after a couple weeks it gets easier. not easy, but easier.
Stick with it!:musc:
tattoobob 03-04-2009, 06:47 PM does anyone find it gets easier after some point?
Never even after 10 years
jimmy z 03-04-2009, 09:39 PM I quit once for a year and a half. I picked 'em up again in a heartbeat.
Now, I just plain hate 'em. I didn't before.
Welcome to the club!:)
saltwaterhabits 03-04-2009, 09:42 PM '''does anyone find it gets easier after some point?'
Hey Bart, I'm about to hit 4 weeks.
I had a few rough days at first.. That was my physical withdrawal. I must admit the Wellbutrin helped immensely.
Today, I can go for about 5-6 hours at times when I don't think about a smoke. That nasty obsession has gone.
When I do think about a smoke I forget about it almost immmediately thereafter.
Go for it Bart,,,,Give it HELL. Mike
Tagger 03-05-2009, 07:09 AM does anyone find it gets easier after some point?
Yes it does ..The cravings slowly get further and further apart. The cravings also slowly get weaker and weaker . I was a 3 pack a day smoker ,(luckys , pallmalls).. That was like 18 yrs. ago . They say 5 days your not physicly addicted anymore . I'd say the little annoying things ,dreams, enjoying the smell,,last a good year. I don't want to overwhelm anyone with that . Thats nothing like the first week you went thru ,, Easy time .. Now that 3 pack a day guy seems like someone eles. That guy (me)was a hard core junky . Don't start again . You'll be pissed at yourself later . Time to grow a pair and not wimp out to the tobacco industry . :nailem:
i've smoked 4 butts in the last six days. thats down from almost a pack day. so i haven't completely quit, but i'm getting there. been trying to sleep off the cravings. thanks for the encouragement...
saltwaterhabits 03-06-2009, 02:06 PM Pretty good Bart, you're almost there.:claps:
keeperreaper 03-06-2009, 04:41 PM Bart keep it up. One week no skoal for me.
thefishingfreak 03-11-2009, 05:42 PM another day down. lost count now.
I'm still on the wellbutrin, taking a pill about every other day. lots of wriglys gum. I feel great put on about 10 pounds but I could use it. :musc:
BasicPatrick 03-11-2009, 11:35 PM Today is March 11
65 days no smokes (down to three or four pcs of gum)
3 weeks of at least 5 days at Planet Fitness (lost like 4 lbs...bummer)
14 years clean (& sober) today (I still go to meetings)
jimmy z 03-13-2009, 03:25 AM I hope all are hanging tough.:musc:

Congrats Patrick .. Joining a gym is a good idea .. Getting in good shape makes less likely I'll poison myself .. I noticed a big difference working the beaches last year .. I actaully gained a few pounds at first joining a gym.. muscle is heavier than fat .. I'm going with it ..
BasicPatrick 03-16-2009, 10:20 AM Tagger...I hear you on the muscle weighs more idea...I have been good and going at least 5 days per week and have only lost 7 pounds...I am doing good on the cutting down and eating healthy and do think I am "shifting" some fat to muscle...I would rather be leaning down and am doing mostly cardio at the gym...reisisting the use of supplements and I am not sure aobut them.
thefishingfreak 03-25-2009, 08:51 PM still at it. lost count now. coming up on 3 months. :musc:
Still on the wellbutrin maybe a pill every 3'rd day or so . or when I start getting pissed off at the world I'll "take a pill dude"
maybe up 10 pounds or so but that leveled off.
jimmy z 03-26-2009, 04:42 AM Good to hear. Stay strong everyone.:wavey:

Raider Ronnie 06-25-2009, 07:06 PM My wife's father & brother came to my house last sun for father's day.
My brother in law went out in my yard to have a few smokes.
He came back in ans STUNK out my house. :yak5:
I wanted to tell him to get the f### out of my house and go stink out your own house, but I don't think that would have gone over good with my wife.
thefishingfreak 08-23-2009, 07:45 PM Bump.

eskimo 08-24-2009, 12:48 PM can't do it.
switched from a pack of camels a day to rolling my own though. Pack of camels a day was pushing me up to about $240 a month, at least with rolling I'm spending $8 every 5 days or so.
can't roll em on the rocks with wet hands either.
far too dependent to cut cold turkey.

4 months, GREAT JOB Matt. Just one won't get you back at this point and don't let it. Get to 6 months no matter what! I think that is when you have broken the back of the habit.
I quit just over 15 years ago after smoking for 30+years (started when I was 14 or 15). I too sampled 1 or 2 cigs during the first year, boy did they taste good. After a year they taste like s**t and you are starting to hate the smell of a smoker. Not sure how anyone can afford that habit any more. Take your cig money an put in a jar as evidence of how much you are saving. When the jar is full CELEBRATE.

jredfly 01-03-2010, 09:57 AM Hang in there - Mark Twain had a great joke where he would say "quitting smoking is easy, I have done it a hundred times." Stay tough!
thefishingfreak 01-04-2010, 08:21 AM I did it! :musc:
A year without a single puff!
I am now a non smoker!
the first few months sucked but it does get easier. keep at it..
PRBuzz 01-04-2010, 08:32 AM Way to go Freak!
FishermanTim 01-04-2010, 01:32 PM Here's a perennial smoking wake-up call.
My sister was diagnosed with throat cancer and had surgery just before Christmas. They told her that they think they got it all, but she will find out more in a couple of days.
If you are a smoker, the longer you keep at it, the greater the chances of possibly developing some form of cancer. If that isn't enough to get the ball rolling, also keep in mind that should you eventually develop cancer, it will consume you. Whether it's surgery, chemo or radiation treatment, your life will be focused on the cancer.
Then, if the worst is realized, and you develop an inoperable and untreatable strain, you will be forced to face you own demise.
That's not even considering what this whole event will do to your family.
We had to watch as my father succumbed to brain and lung cancer, and yet my three younger brothers, my oldest and youngest sisters all still continue to smoke. Now my oldest sister has to deal with her bout with cancer!
Sure, we've all seen and heard the "after-school special" style messages of the dangers of smoking, but how many of us actually heeded those warnings?
Another point of interest to be considered: Just because you smoke doesn't mean that you WILL develop lung cancer, just as using chewing tobacco doesn't guarantee mouth cancer, but think how your life will be forever changed if you had to have you larynx removed and couldn't talk, or had part of your jaw removed and could barely eat or speak?
We all grew up with the "cool smoking look" engraved in our lives, but the coolness disappears when you start losing body parts!
Sorry for the rant, but with my sister and now my younger sounding like my dad just before he was dignosed, it gets me pissed that they chose to give up control to the almighty niccotene.
PRBuzz 01-04-2010, 01:40 PM We all grew up with the "cool smoking look" engraved in our lives, but the coolness disappears when you start losing body parts!
Even the "Marlboro Man" was not immune to cancer, he died from lung cancer.
BasicPatrick 01-07-2010, 01:34 AM Hey Freak Baby...We Did It....Today is my year off the damn Cigarettes!!!!!!!!!
I will state that after the first three months of complete abstinance...I do and will continue to puff on average 2 cigars per week and though some might discount that I am ok with it.
Great Job Freak...if you and I can do it...anyone can!!!!!!!
PRBuzz 01-10-2010, 12:52 PM Since we all carry devices in the event of emergency, here's something for those yet to beat the habit. I've had this one for almost 20 years. Not sure if there is an expiration date on these.
NO more :smokin: !!!!!!!!!
thefishingfreak 01-04-2011, 06:48 PM 2 years as a non smoker.
Saved so much I bought myself a boat.
And an iPhone :hee:
Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device
BigFish 01-04-2011, 06:52 PM And added a few years to your life Mike! Good for you!!!:uhuh:
