View Full Version : Cuttyhunk
Rocco34520 01-06-2009, 05:33 PM Me and a few guys might be taking a trip to Cuttyhunk during the spring/ summer this year. We would love to go with a trip for the company and it would be alot cheaper. I would really appreciate any help. Even if it is any advice that you have on the magical place. Does anyone know any groups that are going?
redlite 01-06-2009, 08:05 PM There are no fish left at Cutty:zup:
This is what it is gonna look like over there this year
:rumble:
There are plenty of closer, cheaper, and easier places to fish on this side of the pond. It is a big commitment and expensive to go over there. And it is a lot of walking and tough, tough fishing. Big investment for hit or miss fishin.
Be prepared.

Rocco34520 01-06-2009, 08:38 PM Someone needs to relax. Always worrying about over crowding. Like only you can fish Cuttyhunk since it is your "spot". It is a pretty secret place. You have no more of a right to be there then i do if i want to go.
fishgolf 01-06-2009, 09:26 PM Geez... give Redlite a break... If he says it is expensive and tough fishing for a hit or miss visit then it is...sounds like good input.
Who's the sensitive one?
Rocco34520 01-06-2009, 09:42 PM Not me! All i want to do i fish. I like going new places. I have taken the money into consideration. And i would like to try it.
BigFish 01-06-2009, 09:48 PM Easy guys...Redlite is just having a little fun!;) Cuttyhunk is a great place to fish but Redlite was right....its no walk in the park! Be prepared to work your butts off for fish! As he said its hit or miss so be prepared! I have been over there and stayed about 15 times and we have had some great trips and had a few so-so trips! Sometimes the fish just jump out of the water at you and others......you spend hours casting miles of shoreline with nary a hit! Thats why they call it fishing! However it was always worth the trip especially if you go with a few good folks as I do! Also the flavor and history of the island makes it all worthwhile! The great people who work and live on the island and at the Fishing Club also make for a wonderful trip! Be prepared to walk miles and miles of softball and bowling ball sized rocks.....shin splints are a guarantee as are leg cramps if you do not stay hydrated! Bring your food as there are no stores over there save for a small general store which opens 2 times a day for 2 hours a whack! Gotta pack your booze too as no liquor stores on the island.....no kidding! Bring extra tip tops for your rod in case you have an issue.....broken tip tops with no replacements can ruin a trip! I usually bring 2-3 rods and 4-5 reels. Plugs are highly recommended especially topwater plugs......spooks, pencils, needles. Swimmers are great when the rockweed allows....if you have a wetsuit you can bypass the weed and fish swimmers to your turkish delight! Many like eels and/or rubber! Bring a camera too.......its a special place and you will want pics to remember your trip!:kewl:
BOSOX 01-06-2009, 10:35 PM I say give it a shot Rocco...I was over there a few years back to install some granite. We were stuck for a few hours waiting for the granite to get there on the barge (we went over on the Seahawk), I wish I brought a stick along for a few casts. The whole place looked fishy. I'm sure local knowledge would help but I'd bet you'll find some fish if you put your time in.
Good luck!
Rocco34520 01-06-2009, 10:37 PM Thanks Larry! Sounds like a special place.
Back Beach 01-07-2009, 09:05 AM Geez... give Redlite a break... If he says it is expensive and tough fishing for a hit or miss visit then it is...sounds like good input.
Redlite's right. If people realized the amount of effort/planning/input/failure involved to get the occasional success, you will appreciate his point of view. Its actually like any other place in that you will fail most of the time.:uhuh:
Redlite's also right in stating there's plenty of equally good fishing close to home if its strictly fish you're looking for.
As for fun and relaxation, I spent three days there last fall, fished for a couple hours, and had my most enjoyable fishing trip of the season. Next time I go, I just might leave the rods home
Its also a great place to play wiffleball...:btu:
JohnR 01-07-2009, 09:11 AM Rocco - Redlite is on target with what he says. If you are going to fish, it is a lot of work. A good group makes a memorable trip for certain, but it is a lot of work. And when it stinks, you can't hop in the truck and move 20 miles....
slow eddie 01-07-2009, 09:20 AM as john said. fishing can be very spotty st times. to be succesfull, you must be able to walk great distances. or you could get lucky and catch fish right at the club. people there are great. bring your korkers. bring extra everything.
NO KORKERS ALLOWED IN CLUBHOUSE.
Back Beach 01-07-2009, 09:35 AM And when it stinks, you can't hop in the truck and move 20 miles....
Thus the booze and wiffleball..:hee:
steve 01-07-2009, 10:12 AM Rocco, it's a great place to fish and any striped bass surf fisherman should experience it before they hang'em up. As some folks have indicated it can be like the "girl with the curl" ie, either very, very good or very, very bad! And , if it is the later, your trip will be less than memorable. That's why it's a good idea to go with a group. I've had some super trips over there. Some of the best fishing I've ever had, but I've also had a couple of stinkers. My companions made said trips bearable, even fun. But , when you go out there you WANT to catch bass. So be prepared, do your home work. Yes, to do it right, you have to do ALOT of walking. A wetsuit is the best thing to fish out of. I will NEVER do Cutty again in waders.Time of year is also important but even prime times can be disappointing. Fishing anywhere is a crap shoot but you have to go out there at least once. . If you would like some specifics, give me a pm. Good Luck! PS, you have to stay at the Cutty bass club for the full experience!
steve 01-07-2009, 10:30 AM Rocco, by the way, Cutty is a small Island but it can handle alot of surf fisherman. Everytime I have gone there, there has been over 100 surf anglers on the Island. Yes , I saw people fishing but mostly right before dark and up to about 11:00pm. After that the walking took it's toll on alot of the guys as well as slow fishing and many packed it in retiring to the Club for drinks and BS sessions. This left most of the Island free to roam and most of the time we fished in peace. Most of the guys go to and fish the west end, which is a hike, or right in front of the club. Sometime the fish are in both places but they do move. If you like to move around and fish some great looking water, Cutty is the place to be. Believe me , I could not fish there last season because of medical problems but I'm OK now and plan on at least 2 trips to the Island in '09. I can't wait.
tobias 01-07-2009, 12:11 PM Can't forget about the great food and gear sabotage:hihi:
Thus the booze and wiffleball..:hee:
Clogston29 01-07-2009, 12:19 PM i just go for the chicks. i like how they all kind of look alike.
Canalman 01-07-2009, 12:23 PM All 5 of them :jump:
The Dad Fisherman 01-07-2009, 12:25 PM All 5 of them :jump:
5 ???? You must have been out there for Spring Break
steve 01-07-2009, 12:26 PM I saw one that was pretty good looking, once!
Back Beach 01-07-2009, 12:40 PM Can't forget about the great food and gear sabotage:hihi:
You mean this?
numbskull 01-07-2009, 01:01 PM Redlite is right, Cuttyhunk is a dangerous place. You get all those Van Staals in one place at the same time and it is liable to flip over on ya. Be careful if you go.
Rockport24 01-07-2009, 02:29 PM I loved Cuttyhunk the one time I went, but the catching was not good at all and we went out there with some real sharpies. The fishing was really good though!
seriously though, some make it out to sound like 50's are just beaching themselves and redlite certainly made it look like that with his impressive skills this past year, but it seems to me the guys that are successful overthere (like Steve, Redlite, Afterhours) have been fishing it for years and years and have really gotton to know the place.
That said, it's a really really special place that I am dying to go back to, the entire experience is just awesome.
tobias 01-07-2009, 03:15 PM Exactly:hihi: Not my bag and those aren't my hands:angel: You have to keep an eye out for those guys from CT. Next time I'm out there with those guys, I'm hiding my stuff.:uhuh:
You mean this?
BassDawg 01-07-2009, 05:48 PM i was just joshing earlier,,,,,,,,,,,,,
having never been to Striper Nirvana
it is a definite MUST FISH spot, hopefully
in '09, i'd like to go for a whole week around a
particular autumn moon :uhuh: :uhuh: :uhuh:
walking, crowds, feesh/no feesh ~~BE DAMNED!!
Krispy 01-08-2009, 09:19 AM Exactly:hihi: Not my bag and those aren't my hands:angel: You have to keep an eye out for those guys from CT. Next time I'm out there with those guys, I'm hiding my stuff.:uhuh:
Aah, forgot about that already. I recognize those sausage hands, must plan retaliation.
I'm no Cutty regular, but its no big deal, don't make it some mystical pilgramage, its not.
if next season pans out like last season, your better off getting a room at the YMCA in proidence and snag and drop pogies in the providence river.. you will catch 5 times more bass there than on cutty. :smash:
steve 01-08-2009, 10:37 AM And Providence has better looking chicks!
whiplash 01-08-2009, 11:14 AM Now I thought last year was pretty good on Cuttyhunk. Granted I wasn't blessed with any of those Fairhaven 50's but I caught my share of 20+ lb fish. Early June was best. Ya never know when the fish will show but if you put in the time you can usually drag up something.
Crafty Angler 01-08-2009, 12:47 PM Has anyone ever brought a mountain bike with rod tubes (and a good headlight) over on the boat?
It's a relatively small island - seems like it would work...:smokin:
Not like there's a lot of traffic to dodge, either -
redlite 01-08-2009, 01:24 PM I had thought about it quite a few times and seen some people utilize this method, but here are my thoughts why I didn't (mainly cause I gots 4 wheeler usage)
It really limits your ability to hunt.
If you leave it and pound the shore line hunting, you still need to walk back along the shoreline to where you left it. And it is tough riding it over the dirt roads with fish.
I have found that it is just easier to make the hike to sows (about 30 mins) or Churches or out to the cut (Impossible to ride a bike out to) and it isn't worth the hassle of dealing with a bike.
jeffthechef 01-08-2009, 04:26 PM fished cutty last year for the first time. i fish montauk a lot more as i am originally from LI. i don't think you can compare two of the most beautiful places in the world to striper fish. cutty has it's own charm. as does montauk, as does block and any of a dozen other legendary haunts. fish'em all if you can. if you go to only catch fish, wherever you go, and will be dissapointed if you don't, then let me know the formula for not getting dissapointed!
Cutty is a waste of time as is Block Island ,Montauk and all places in between
according to the legend, these place were hyped up by writers who's night job encompassed selling hotel rooms at Montauk, boat slips at Block and.........well,I am not sure what they are selling at Cutyy. Rocks maybe?
Anyway, Cape is the place you want to be.Bassdozer said so. I just would not try to cast those wooden Musso meta lips between two seals.
Or Jersey in the spring. But you might have to clear it with NIB first.
You got a better shot at tickets for Obama Nomination
nightfighter 01-08-2009, 06:42 PM A trip to the island with the Cutty Crew is one of the circled events on my season's calendar for a number of years now. While you always have a chance at possibly landing a 40 or possibly a 50, that is not what it is all about. A getaway with a bunch of guys who are as into striper fishing, with the Cuttyhunk Fishing Club as our base of operation, is about having fun, laughs, stepping back in time and getting away from the real world for a short bit. We laugh, lie, tell stories, swap and ho', chit on one another, wreck stuff on land and sea,and eat like kings. Always someone willing to go out and fish with. As close to being back in a college fraternity as you can get at my age,,,The majority of trips have not resulted in large nor numerous fish. But there have been some nice fish caught. Last year some of us even chartered with a local captain. We caught fish and learned a lot about surf fishing the island from being on the boat.
You need to be agile to navigate the bowling ball rocks that are constantly shifting underfoot over 75% of the shoreline. If you aren't agile or up to walking several miles at a whack, you are just not going to be able to access some of the proven, mystical, island gems. You'll be pissed for not having built up to it, as many can vouch for.
My seven trips have not gotten me even a 20# fish, but I still look forward to the trip and being with the guys.
Fish_Eye 01-08-2009, 06:43 PM Tell me more. Sounds like a productive place :)
nightfighter 01-08-2009, 06:57 PM Hey Mike!:humpty:
Here is favorite all-time thread, though the photos are not there anymore. A fine piece of writing by Mr Laptew. If that doesn't get you jonseing to fish again, you gotta be dead!
