View Full Version : Locking Roof Rack Reviews and Opinions
Now that I have all the rods and reels I should ever need I'm looking to upgrade my transport system. I got a nice set up from chief10 a few years ago but looking to upgrade it a little. Looking for recommendations. I'd like to be able to lock in 4 rods and reels. My first thought was the hunter rack. I know the surfcaster has one also. I just need something that I can put on my trac rac system.
Anybody have experiences with these or have a used one they are looking to unload?

If you have been looking for a reliable way to transport and secure your valuable spinning or conventional fishing outfit's under lock and key, your search is over...
Introducing the Rod VaultŠ
The Rod Vault is precisely engineered to lock both rod and reel to any SUV roof rack, P/U truck cap or RV side. The best feature is that when it is locked, not only are your rods and reels secured, but the Rod Vault itself cannot be removed because the mounting hardware is not accessible.
The Rod Vault has been time tested and proven to be the absolute front runner in rod and reel transport security. If you think about how many opportunities exist for your valuable gear to be lost to theft while your vehicle is out of your sight (especially during night trips), you may consider the purchase of a Rod Vault as being a cost effective insurance policy!
Specifications:
* Main structure and internal locking mechanism fully constructed of T6061 aircraft grade aluminum.
* Assembled using all stainless stainless steel hardware.
* Protective ABS inserts accept all spinning reel sizes and most mid-size conventional reels.
* All aluminum components are coated with a black anodize finish.
* Plastic coated front clips accommodate all rod sizes.
* Locks both rods and reels (maximum of two).
* Slide bar is reversible for driver or passenger side applications.
* Can be mounted vertical (RV side) or horizontal (SUV roof rack).
* Includes step by step instructions for drill or non-drill mounting applications.
* Mounting hardware and lock not included*
* Low profile/compact design leaves plenty of available room for other accessories (i.e. - kayak racks, luggage carriers, etc.)
* Measures 11 3/4" L x 3" H x 2" W.
* Due to the Rod Vault's endless mounting possibilities, it would be virtually impossible to include hardware accommodating every drill or non-drill application. The basic hardware required is clearly defined within the mounting instructions and readily accessible at all hardware stores. If a non-drill mounting application is desired, examples of compatible clamps offered by other manufacturers are illustrated in the instructions and available for purchase online or in retail stores.

The Dad Fisherman 01-07-2009, 10:32 AM I'm leaning towards picking up a Hunter for next season myself. They look to be the most secure.
ThrowingTimber 01-07-2009, 10:58 AM Picked up the surfcaster 6 rod model from a member here and its awesome and does its job well. I mostly use it to transport rods while theyre transported I lock it etc in case I stop quick for a coffee or gas. I dont leave the rods unattended on the rack so it works just fine for me.
The thing that turned me off the rod vault is the piece the holds the upper portion of the rods are those clamp things they use to hold mops... So it played out in my mind.. here I go down the highway at 0' dark 30 ,90-95mph the mop holder thing lets go and SNAP!!!!!!!!
Rod Vault! I got the 4 rod version last year and I love it. Get it if you can, rods and reels are safe and secured. Get a nice lock and you are all set. Frisly
steve 01-07-2009, 11:08 AM Luds, I know someone who has had a Surfcaster rack for many , many years and loves it. It still works as well as the day he bought it. You might also check with Saltwater Edge (401-842-0062). They have a guy who custom makes some super racks. Iron Mike , Pete G. , Earl and Robbie have them plus a bunch of other folks. I'd have one but I can put my rod(s) in my vehicle , which I prefer. Give the Edge a call. I think the guy is still around. He's from nearby CT. The racks are really nice.

Rocco34520 01-07-2009, 05:24 PM Steve i think the guy you are thinking of's company is called Fishing Innovations. I am also looking into the same one, but the site seems to be down right now?

Thanks Steve. Mike showed me those at the edge and I agree that they are really nice. If I remember correctly they were a little more expensive than the hunter but I'll have to check it out. I've always admired Pete's bumper rack. Thanks also for the info on the surfcaster rack. I also prefer to have my rods in the vehicle and do that when I have my wife's car. Just can't get them in the cab of my truck. Interior rod storage is a must in my next vehicle. It's nice to be able to conceal that your fishing at all to reduce the chance of a break in.
PurpelNoon 01-08-2009, 07:04 AM The other brand needs a lock for each rod which I think is a big con against it.
Sea Dangles 01-08-2009, 12:26 PM 11' fits inside the suburban no problem. I have two straps, one with velcro one with loops. I think I got them at The Surfcaster or Cabela's. The best part is they were $30 or $40 tops.

I know you gave me some bs reason as to why you keep the rods inside your vehicle but I can't remember what it was. I think its really to keep the insect guts off your VS's. :laugha:
