View Full Version : Bad knees?
basswipe 01-19-2009, 06:16 PM Anybody else?
Shattered both in a car accident many years back.
All the shoveling and the up and down temps are killing me.Plus with my type of work,it don't help.
I actually have to step down my basement stairs sideways.Going up stairs is no issue, going down has become very painful.
tattoobob 01-19-2009, 06:25 PM Knees are shot here to, to many years plumbing and working on my knees they are killing me today. If I don't have knee pads or something to kneel on I am all done.
Crafty Angler 01-19-2009, 06:26 PM I got hit by a car years ago on my 10 speed, punted 30' and screwed my knee, Norm -
Never bothered me until the last few years - got some knot on the side now, probably calcium..I dunno...
We've been giving our dogs glucosimine chondroitin, one of them tore her ACL a few weeks ago, she's going to Boston Feb 3rd for surgery...
I'm gonna start taking it too - haven't yet, but want to see if it helps.
Be warned, it ain't cheap - look for it at CVS or something when they do the 2 for 1 on vitamins and minerals - the vet told me brand doesn't matter, start at 250 mg to see how it's tolerated and try to push it to 1,000 - I guess the same would be true for humans -
Google it and check it out anyway - it gets good reviews with no serious downsides that I know of - good luck.
Start it now man - if ya wanna hit the Spring blackfish spot in your old backyard...;)
basswipe 01-19-2009, 06:41 PM Even though things are more or less the same as last year you really don't think about it until after the 40th.
Gonna get the glucosimine chondroitin this week.
Some Spring blackies sounds good right about now my friend.

Just wait'll ya hit 6-0, Norm - it's a trip...
Hey, also have another Spring spot even closer to ya I haven't tried yet...:uhuh:..may be better than the other from some intel I got last summer -
MakoMike 01-19-2009, 06:56 PM No acls in either knee, screwed up meniscus in both. Only bother me once in a while, but when they do nothing takes the pain away, at least nothing you can buy OTC.
OLD GOAT 01-19-2009, 07:53 PM Dudes Itake 2 1500mg pills a day(glucosamine) which i now get on line from Puritan,s pride.com. i can,t remember the price but it,s not bad at all. Hope this helps.
Saltheart 01-20-2009, 08:54 AM I have had 11 surgeries on my two knees combined. 3 old fashion cut em open and 8 othroscopic. Too many sports injuries. As part of my bionification I hope to have two new knees someday to match my new designer hip.
In fishing the knees kill you from standing in one place a long time. It not only hurts the knees but the overall pain just drains your energy level in your whole body.
The Dad Fisherman 01-20-2009, 08:59 AM I started doing the Glucosomine this winter for my knees and I have to say its done a world of good. They aren't creaking like they usedto and they aren't as stiff.
we get it at Sams club and its only $14 a bottle of 500 so check it out there.
2 a day...1 in the morning and 1 at night.
Only problem is that the pills are huge....Linda Lovelace would have a hard time choking these puppies down...
GattaFish 01-20-2009, 09:33 AM I messed up and had surgery on my knee many years ago.. broke it, surgery, pins, brace and all the good stuff,,, not sure if it was as bad as some of you guys out there but never the less constant pain,,,,
I have honestly found that when it gets cold and aches I have a 1/4" thick neoprene wrap (closed knee) that I put on and wear..it slides on over the foot and squeezes fairly tight,, mostly to sleep in ... I guess it just locks in the heat and gives support,,,, when it aches really bad or I am doing something strenuous I will wear it all day,,,
Raven 01-20-2009, 09:45 AM when your knees hurt...
side ways is ok but backwards feels better
fish oil is what gives our joints lubrication
after 39-40 yrs we start making less of this oil...
oil from trout especially....is good
over at sears they have these simple green knee pads
craftsman brand
and they are so *comfortable and cheap - just 5 bucks
*that you find out you still have them on at the grocery store
gone fishin 01-20-2009, 08:28 PM Both knees completely shot - bone on bone. Will have em both replaced when I cannot fish anymore. Problem is that the right hip is going because of favoring the knees. Only thing golden in your 70's is your urine (ifyourlucky). Thank god for drugs!:(
basswipe 01-20-2009, 08:53 PM Really hurting today.
They really hurt right now.My right knee is so swollen its the size of a large grapefruit. The left ain't much better.
Oh well another narcotic induced night of sleep. Can't wait to wake up nice and tired tomorrow.
Clammer 01-20-2009, 09:55 PM pretty much everything is gone on me ;;
&7 my knees are the killer /of doing alot of stuff >>>>>>>>like standing up /its gotten so bad ...in 2007 I kinda resigned myselk to not fishing @ night alone / & by this summer 2008 / between all the abuse over the years & the constant pounding standing in the boat / I had a few unpleasant experiences . so much so my kids don,t want to fish anytime , anyplace alone ;;that really sucks ;;
but the last 2 months I,ve been taking the G/C complex *& I can really see & feel the difference /
I have two doctors appointments on thursday / with the 2nd one I,m going to bring the bottle so she can tell me what amount I S/b taking ;;
OH lighting up helps also >>it makes me think I,m ok :smokin:
Crafty Angler 01-21-2009, 09:41 AM Hey Clammer after you see the doc let us know what she says for dosage - my right knee ain't great, gonna give it a try with the GC to see if it helps this coming season -
I wanna stick with the original parts I came with for as long as I can -

the problem is Crafty...the body starts not producing H. A. sometime in your late forties...
then it's like running a car on battery power alone
and the alternator isn't recharging anymore...
eventually - you run into problems...
i only wish i could afford to buy some..
but hey - Knowledge is free :musc:
Saltheart 01-21-2009, 10:47 AM I started the Glucosamine + MSM about a week ago. they say it takes 4 to 6 weeks. I hope it works. even a little help would make a big difference in my case.
Crafty Angler 01-21-2009, 11:06 AM Thanks a lot for posting that, Rav - it illuminates it for me, this old carcass is starting to get like a high mileage car...:hs:
I'e gotta take one of my dogs to Angell Memorial Hospital on Feb 3 - she tore her ACL rough-housing in the yard with the golden, so I'm gonna take her to one of the best around who worked on the golden when he got a spiral fracture 8 yrs ago - the guy is awesome and the charges aren't much more than having it done locally - this particular surgeon is flown all over the country to work on very expensive horses as well -
Anyway, long way of saying it'll be interesting to talk to an orthopedic surgeon in regards to knees, the mechanics are the same I would think, may give me some insight -
Raven 01-21-2009, 02:15 PM i posted it because very few people know about it...
and we need all the weaponry we can get
......at this stage of the game
using glucosamine and fish oil is good for lubrication
of one's joints but why not use the real thing
now that it's available in a supplemental form.:bounce:
