View Full Version : AquaSkinz Finger Shield
JohnnyD 01-20-2009, 02:10 PM Anyone use it or have any sort of review of it?
Still remember my first cast ever of a 4oz jig using 50# PP. Couldn't cast again for a week.
For the rest of the season, cloth medical tape wrapped around my index finger kept me somewhat wound free. Works great on days I don't catch any fish, but as soon as it gets damp it's useless and new tape doesn't stick well after either.
The Dad Fisherman 01-20-2009, 02:18 PM I've been using these for a couple of years....work well for me and they are cheap. I go through 3 or 4 a season.

I also love the gloves. Maybe my favorite piece of surfcasting gear. I lose about 4 right hand gloves a season. Gets expensive. :gorez:
Let me know if anyone wants to trade right hand gloves for left hand ones. I have a few extra.

I hear ya Luds. But they are priced right at $20. I dont mind going through a couple pairs a season.
eskimo 01-20-2009, 02:32 PM you could try water proof med tape.
My roommate is a tech at the hospital and gives me a roll from time to time. I keep the whole roll in my bag and it gets dunked.
adhesive still seems to work even when wet.
Once in a while they will slip off.
Sweetwater 01-20-2009, 02:45 PM Go conventional and lose the gloves :)
wheresmy50 01-20-2009, 03:05 PM I second the J&J waterproof tape. You can even reapply on wet hands.

Oh right, now I remember the last time you used one of my conventionals and I spent about an hour removing the bird's nest. So, on second thought, gloves are a good idea and they will also keep you from breaking a nail. :rotflmao:

Nice one.:smash:
Mike P 01-20-2009, 04:34 PM Here's the problem with the Aquaskinz finger guard---it only comes in one size, and hands don't.

That's exactly my concern, especially since I have elfish sized hands.
numbskull 01-20-2009, 05:01 PM I was gonna get one at Xmas for Sauerkraut, but figured he'd have trouble picking his nose while waiting for a fish to eat his eel.
BassDawg 01-20-2009, 05:21 PM i also prefer the old-school method,,,,,,,,,,
cloth tape, no problems as of yet.
works fine AND, i can buy 16 eeeeeels
for the price of yer sissy guard!!!
:bl: :p :p :p :bl:
gone fishin 01-20-2009, 08:08 PM Hocky tape! Works fine.. Oh yeh - comes in PINK also............
Just cut a finger off of your wifes dishwashing gloves. Works like a champ. Better take the whole glove though when ya cut the fingers off. She will most likely notice.:jump1:
MAKAI 01-20-2009, 10:45 PM John, start grinding your hands in a bucket of sand everyday, great for callouses and by summer you will be crushing walnuts in your hands. Then when you backlash our gear you won't burn your thumb.

Don't you start with me too. And for the record, I did better casting yours while it was almost wide open than Paul's. I think it's just a matter of Paul being cursed.
Thanks again for the clinic that day - definitely was a big help.
MAKAI 01-20-2009, 10:56 PM Your quite welcome young padawan.
JamesJet 01-20-2009, 11:01 PM I was thinking about the gloves myself, but with my luck I would forget them. I use a piece of inner tube taped on with waterproof medical tape. Works pretty well and I keep it consul storage and a spare in my surfbag just in case.
I saw those woven leather finger guards up at Surfland - They look like they might slide off.

Until then you're the sissy! :faga:
FishnGrega 01-21-2009, 12:24 PM gotta love the gloves. if i manage to forget them i have a roll of athletic tape in my counsel that works just fine and holds fairly well when wet.

If by "cursed" you mean letting you use my gear, then I'd agree. :cheers2:
The Dad Fisherman 01-21-2009, 04:01 PM I got a pair of the Aquaskinz Gloves I use when the weather gets colder....they work great also.
My son has a pair he uses when he goes canoeing too..
BasicPatrick 01-21-2009, 04:10 PM I am on the pro staff so I am definately biased.
I will say that what I find great about the AS Finger Shield is that it works for both my index finger when casting a spinner and on my thumb when casting a Conventional.
I use both the gloves and the sheild depending on what I am doing.
They are both priced right.
The reason I think they are a good chioice compared to other products is the sensitivity I get while still having the kevlar over the neoprene to reduce wear.
Sure, they will wear but a lot slower than other gloves with similar sensativity. Of course, just like everything else it helps when a littel effort is taken to care for them like rinsing out once in a while.
Mike P 01-21-2009, 04:20 PM That's exactly my concern, especially since I have elfish sized hands.
I have the exact opposite problem--long, thin palms and long fingers. The Velcro attachment straps only reach the heel of my hand.
You should be able to get a good fit by crossing the attachment straps farther up your wrist.

Thanks Mike. I'll just have to try one on. Anyone know of a shop between 495 and Truro that has them in stock? Probably heading that way in a few weeks.
Thanks everyone for the help.

An honorable man would take his win and call it a day. Give me that video back. You're no longer allowed to enjoy it.

Red Top had them in the fall. Probably still do.

Tagger 01-21-2009, 09:49 PM Just cut a finger off of your wifes dishwashing gloves.

Krispy 01-25-2009, 01:26 PM Fingerguards? For real?
fishaholic18 01-25-2009, 05:59 PM I've never had the need for a finger guard or glove..except if it is too cold to go bare handed. Never did understand why guys wear them, I've never had a prob. cutting myself with braid..conv. or spin, surf or boat....Maybe diff casting style????? Girlie hands???? I don't know... Curious....

I think that has alot to do with proper casting form. Yeah I just kissed your ass a little. I put way too much pressure on the line with my finger. I just can't break the habit. One day I'll lose a finger for it. :o

Clogston29 01-26-2009, 07:30 AM i can and do fish braid without gloves with relatively heavy, say up to 3 oz, plugs without issue. but more and more i find myself fishing with gloves on each hand. just don't see the point in destroying my hands (bass thumb/hand, barnacle cuts, line cuts, etc.) when i can comfortably were a pair of aquaskinz gloves. i guess i'm just soft.
Mike P 01-26-2009, 09:38 AM It has to do more with casting heavy weights, than proper form. If you want to try to tell me that I don't have good form, you're going to get into one hell of an argument :chatter :whackin:
3 oz is about the lightest weight that I cast. When you move up to 4, 5 and 6 oz, you need something on your finger. Especially when it's raining--wet skin cuts way more easily than dry.
Braid is abrasive--all brands--even the soft ones like Sufix. After a night of throwing 4 oz jigs with a reel like a 525 Mag or a Saltist, my leveling thumb looks like raw hamburger. Retrieving eels and light plugs doesn't put nearly as much stress on your thumb as humping 4 oz jigs from 40' depths against a 4 knot current does. Same is true when you're talking about casts with a spinning reel. Once my leveling thumb is junk, I have to switch over until the skin repairs itself--if I chew my trigger finger up, what am I supposed to do--not fish? :rtfm:
bassballer 01-26-2009, 10:24 AM I usually always wear aquaskins gloves mainly for grabbing rocks, ect. One night took the gloves off, got swept off a rock by a waves threw me backwards and I was scraping my hands down the rock trying to hold on for dear life. After i got myself back onto the rock my hands looked like they had gone through a cheese grater. I always wear gloves now. No exception.
fishgolf 01-26-2009, 07:19 PM Switched back to Yozuri Hybrid from braid to save the skin on my hands. Don't need gloves anymore, though heavier jigs are tougher to retrieve with the Hybrid line.
I met my current wife in October about 5 or 6 years ago.
My hands looked like I had leprosy, had to hide them from her...all from no gloves, braid and lots of fish... She fell in love with me anyway...must have been the braces :)
