FishermanTim 01-22-2009, 04:16 PM Looks like it may be the rebirth of the "handyman".
Since most of the companies you would normally call have let their staff go, they can't possibly "send someone right out".
There's something to be said for working "under the table" (no pun intended).
Hopefully things will pick up, but it's not looking that way at this time.
Raven 01-22-2009, 04:43 PM that Bose is laying off 1000 people this year.....

JohnR 01-22-2009, 07:20 PM Eddie & Dave - real sorry to hear this... Went through it last year and things were better. But there is time for the mind to adjust too. Take advantage of it
sokinwet 01-22-2009, 07:30 PM Just saw on the news... Microsoft cutting big time... despite good earnings?
Still working at the same local government job I've been at for 32 yrs. but I've been told I have to take a 1 week furlough. I'd gladly take a small hit to save someones job but because my job is grant funded there is no impact on the local budget. I have to take the hit for appearance sake!!...even though a majority of other depts. are untouched. Still wouldn't mind (more days fishing!) except it will effect my pending retirement...so everyone loses a weeks pay and I lose that and probably 15K in pension over my retirement!:realmad:

This kind of crap pisses me off. Basically saying no jobs for blue collar white guys.............
The Stimulus: How to Create Jobs Without Them All Going to Skilled Professionals and White Male Construction Workers
The stimulus plan will create jobs repairing and upgrading the nation's roads, bridges, ports, levees, water and sewage system, public-transit systems, electricity grid, and schools. And it will kick-start alternative, non-fossil based sources of energy (wind, solar, geothermal, and so on); new health-care information systems; and universal broadband Internet access.
It's a two-fer: lots of new jobs, and investments in the nation's future productivity.
But if there aren't enough skilled professionals to do the jobs involving new technologies, the stimulus will just increase the wages of the professionals who already have the right skills rather than generate many new jobs in these fields. And if construction jobs go mainly to white males who already dominate the construction trades, many people who need jobs the most -- women, minorities, and the poor and long-term unemployed -- will be shut out.
What to do? There's no easy solution to either dilemma. But there's no reason to think about "green jobs" as simply high-tech. Many low-income and low-skilled workers -- women as well as men -- could be put directly to work providing homes and businesses with more efficient and renewable heating, lighting, cooling, and refrigeration systems; installing solar panels and efficient photovoltaic systems; rehabilitating and renovating old properties, and improving recycling systems. "Green Jobs Corps" teams could be trained to evaluate and advise homeowners and businesses on these and other means of conserving energy.
People can be trained relatively quickly for these sorts of jobs, as well as many infrastructure j0bs generated by the stimulus -- installing new pipes for water and sewage systems, repairing and upgrading equipment, basic construction -- but contractors have to be nudged both to provide the training and to do the hiring.
I'd suggest that all contracts entered into with stimulus funds require contractors to provide at least 20 percent of jobs to the long-term unemployed and to people withincomes at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level. And at least 2 percent of project funds should be allocated to such training. In addition, advantage should be taken of buildings trades apprenticeships -- wich must be fully available to women and minorities.
Really sounds like he hates white people, huh?

I know that. Him and Rangel want to "do things their way" with the stimulus money for inferstructure (sp?)
Listening to the clips was kind of disturbing. Especially when they say "It doesn't take much to "train Peopleto do this". What a couple of pompous asses.
Raven 01-22-2009, 08:44 PM kind of a twist on the Tiger Muskie connection there... http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c66/ravenob1/sign-GUYS/face.png
Spinn good advice...
The Biotech sector is still expanding like crazy...
as soon as President OBAMA releases restrictions on stem cell research everything will go ballistic.

Hey, I understand your concerns and sympathize, I wasn't trying to necessarily agree with it either.
I do absolutely believe that we need to focus some energy on creating jobs in the 'green' sector, but I see no reason why it shouldn't go the qualified people, whatever the color or sex is!
Hatchets:jump: I remember doing that to a plug.
Maybe I'll get into nursing........Could ya see me as a male nurse in the cardiac unit... They'd be keeling over left and right.

I agree. I don't care what color their skin is or what sex they are either. Whoever is qualified...
He made it sound like; we'll take this group of unqualified people and train them in a few weeks. Then they can go out and build our bridges.... This isn't a quote, just my loose interpretation of their "little talk".
Raven 01-22-2009, 09:01 PM Because i'm part

I also think that there is an opportunity to bring people from urban centers into this process as well... We can install all the solar panels we want on someones second home on the cape, but we really need to move this process forward in urban settings as well.. I guess the way I read it is that they want to take some percentage of the stimulus money and train people for these jobs.
"20 percent of jobs to the long-term unemployed and to people withincomes at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level. To me it sounds like some percentage (maybe 20% is high) should go to people chronically out of work (again I would add that are qualified to do the work) and at least 2% goes to training new (or retraining older???) workers and this should be available to women and minorities, not has to be available and excluding white guys.....
but thats my take on it, and we know what opinions are like :bshake:
I wish you and tagger the best in finding work ASAP!
Backbeach Jake 01-22-2009, 09:21 PM Sorry to hear you guys aren't working. This economy scares the crap out of me. Jobs gone overseas and the manufacturers wondering where their customers went, duh. Foreclosures (really bad mojo in my book) means that there are too many houses and no money to pay for them so why build. The working man's shoulders hold this country aloft, and when he gets knocked off his feet, then what? My business is booming, people are repairing their cars and not buying new. The boss wants me to work crazy overtime but I can't , too old and tired, so he puts in a second shift, which is fine by me , more guys have jobs, not a bad thing. We're in for a rocky road in the next 2 years, I figure. We're all in this together, we're all connected..
The main problem with our line of work is financing. No matter what the TV is telling us, the money isn't there. I've seen 4 different projects either stop or never start.
On one particular job the banks want a name. They (a group of Doctors) can't use a corp. The bank wants an individuals name not their corp. Money is tight and the first "bailout" was crap as far as I am concerned.
BigFish 01-22-2009, 10:16 PM I thought the first bailout was a mistake....has since proven to be so! I say no more and let em' go belly up! Survival of the fittest! If they (auto makers) can't get into the 21st century technology maybe its time for them to go!
JohnnyD 01-22-2009, 11:36 PM I thought the first bailout was a mistake....has since proven to be so! I say no more and let em' go belly up! Survival of the fittest! If they (auto makers) can't get into the 21st century technology maybe its time for them to go!
I agree. Bailing out the banks is one thing, but automakers? They've already reported that they're still in rough shape. The bailout will just be a waste of money and delay the inevitable. Development in the automotive industry is too slow for a one time injection to "fix everything."
There's no replacement for a good business model. Unfortunately for them, they're business models are no longer relevant. Let them fail.
Backbeach Jake 01-23-2009, 06:39 AM If people had good paying jobs and didn't have to compete with China, the automakers and banks wouldn't need a friggin bailout. But the automakers sent jobs to the four corners of the third world and the banks lent to the underemployed. Both bit themselves in the ass.

Good luck finding one you can get into.
Mr. Sandman 01-23-2009, 01:41 PM Robert Reich should move to a socialist country. I hate everything that little man spews.
This is a time to start a business. Take some risk, invest in yourself and do your own thing. You can get stuff on the cheap now, and start your business slowly. Yeah it will be hard. The economy will pick up and you will be golden. Don't wait for someone to "give" you a job. Make your own job. Stop working for others and make your own future.
IMO the single (& simplest) thing our government should do is to make college tuition tax deductible. The by doing this you REALLY invest in the county and advanced technology with remarkable long term benefits. Giving people checks is the dumbest thing you can do. The money disappears and doesn't stimulate a damn thing. NEVER HAS AND NEVER WILL. Everyone wants it fixed "today"...it ain't gonna happen. A full tax deduction is easy to implement helps the right people (the ones that will bail out this nation in the end) and does the right thing in terms of educating the masses. Of course this is not a cure-all it will take further investment in technology areas and defense to make this country great again but it is a good start.
