View Full Version : Broke down and bought a boat
Cool Beans 01-29-2009, 12:51 PM I got me a 21' Proline Center console w/175hp mercury, back in October and live up near Newport, RI. Last year, I rented a boat a few times from the navy base and we caught a few up near sandy point using 6 ounce diamond jigs bouncing them off the bottom in around 50' of water. A lot of people told me to use poggies, so we tried, but with the tide heading out it was hard to keep it near the fish, and didn't catch anything. My 12yo daughter caught a 24 pounder after she switched back over to the jigs. Most of the time, we were fishing but not catching. Can anyone give me some tips on fishing the waters around Newport? And what is the absolute earliest I can get out there fishing with the possibility of catching some stripers. Thanks.

RIJIMMY 01-29-2009, 01:45 PM You have access to miles and miles of fishable waters. There are tons of rips, rocks, deep water, points etc to give you a lifetime of fishing opportunitiesThe best fishing I have had directly in the bay is from 5/1 through 7/15 for daylight fishing and from then on through November its mostly night with some daytime fall action.
I dont think most people will give up specific spots and regarding your questions on pogies, I would reccomend Jim White's new book, SHallow Water Stripers - sponsor Joe Lyons has it a surfcasting-ri.com. Jim is a guide in Narr. Bay and explains a lot of the areas to fish as well as techniques. I think you'll easily be able to apply it to the areas you are near.
Have fun and be safe, I've has a boat the past 2 seasons and love every second I am on the water.
Cool Beans 01-29-2009, 08:49 PM Thanks for the warm welcome! Are there stripers out there now, holding up in the deeper water (around 70' in a few holes Ive seen). I have the entire month of April off and wanna get my boat in the water..... Would it be a waste to go after stripers that early, or should I just fish for something else? I'll be too bored to not be on the water.... Thanks.

Swimmer 01-29-2009, 09:36 PM You know Beans, boat fish don't count.
when the squid show at the causeway, the bass will usually be right behind them...

Yes I realize that. Swimmer. I spent the past 3 years fishing off the rocks by Fort Adams in the middle of the night on the outgoing tides. Did ok, but was difficult fishing with 3 kids. After my 14 yo daughter slipped and busted her butt on the rock, the wife didn't want me taking the kids out there, especially at night. Last year we rented a boat from the navy base 3 or 4 times and the kids loved it, so even if it is cheating just a bit, to use a boat, I can spend more quality time fishing with my kids. Prior to this it's been all salmon fishing for me in Washington state, then shortly after arriving here I went out there off Fort Adams, and after 2 hours or so of chunking poggies, I landed my first Striper (14 pounds or so) and have been hooked ever since. I hope to see some of you out there on the water this year. I'm still learning my way around the fish here, so thanks for all the advise guys.

You know, Frank, I've tried to tell myself that every time I bring one over the rail...............But the ones that hit the deck or the fishbox do!:bshake::tooth:

FishermanTim 01-30-2009, 04:36 PM It's better to break down and buy a boat, than to buy a boat and then break down.:biglaugh::rotf3::biglaugh:
Like the old saying goes: "I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal labotomy!"
