Figured I'd clean up the Jeep a little with the sun out to get some of the caked-on salt off it - the guy I bought the Jeep from had big BFG All Terrains on it mounted on American Racing rims -

The rims are fine but the lug nuts are showing some minor rust - any suggestions...:huh:

If you don't care about looks I would coat them with marine bearing grease. I do my trailers with that and have never had a problem. Now if they are nice chromy ones than I have no idea as I am not vain and have a foot of trash in my front seat right now so I would not be the guy to ask about nice looking stuff.

and buy a bolt for it

then you can clamp it in the vice

and wire brush one nut at a time

then oil it up after wards

If they are chromed nuts, chances are that the steel is rusting underneath the chrome coating... no real cure for that- If its bugging you, I would remove one and take it in to NAPPA and buy 16 or 20 new ones.

If they are the stock jeep nuts they are as stainless cover over a steel nut. Do yourself a favor and go to napa or carquest and get some good one piece nuts and put them on with a little antisieze. The problem with the 2 piece nuts: the rust expands under the stainless shell and then one is forced to take the shell off with a chisel and pound a metric inpact socket over the remainder of the half rounded steel insert. :cens:

Nah..it's not a vanity thing - the new Jeep (new to me anyway) is a nicer vehicle than I've had in a while and I'm just trying to baby it - don't see us getting another car for a while now the way things are -

They're a set of locking nuts but couldn't figure out why they started going south so quick - the rims and tires are pretty near new.

I'll spend some time on it tomorrow when it's warmer again, might try some Rust Free - I may replace 'em and put on a little antiseize, like Gary said, don't wanna have to find myself having to chisel them off and wreck one of the studs. Not sure if they're the original lugs nuts or not -

i had some rusty nuts once
that were so bad we had to use a cutting
torch to get the wheel off
because the tire was flat

go buy some cheap plastic wheel covers so you don't have to look at them:laughs:
