I'm hoping - if it is true - that you're not referring to the Mon/Tues rain event -
My wife and I are taking one of our dogs to Angell Memorial in Boston, leaving Newport Tuesday morning at 05:30 -
Say it ain't so...:smokin:
BassDawg 01-30-2009, 09:40 AM it is predicted to be the biggest ever

up to 10 inches of Rain .... possible
hey Raven,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
1978 was a Snow Storm, ne c'est pas???
so how does 10" of rain become such a cause for
"notice" other than the flooding factor?
will it be cold enuff for snow when she arrives, and
if so then 10" of rain = 60" of snow, right? THEREFORE;
:err: :err: :wall: :smash: :buds: :fury: :buds: :smash: :wall: :err: :err:
BigBo 01-30-2009, 09:52 AM :lurk: Okay thanks:lurk:

The Dad Fisherman 01-30-2009, 09:56 AM will it be cold enuff for snow when she arrives, and

:err: :err: :wall: :smash: :buds: :fury: :buds: :smash: :wall: :err: :err:
its actually a 10-1 ratio....so 100 inches of snow.
Can't wait to break the news to my son :hihi:

What did you use to seal it and hows does it sit in the water?
Raven 01-30-2009, 10:11 AM after 3 or 4 feet --- what does it matter?
yeah one inch of rain equals about 1 foot of snow - supposedly
so there fore 10 inches equals 10 feet of snow
this is what i was told Crafty from a good guy
who has a reputable source in the business
of weather forecasting... anonymously
it would be irresponsible for me not to inform you
i don't joke around about this kind of stuff.

Crafty Angler 01-30-2009, 10:29 AM Okay - looks like I'll be monitoring the weather channel...
There is a cold front right behind the low system due here Monday...
Gonna stay at DefCon 3 until it hits the news...
Until then I'll just go inventory milk and bread reserves for now -

numbskull 01-30-2009, 10:40 AM This may force people to resort to cannabilism. Thank god I don't live in Brockton.
Canalman 01-30-2009, 10:45 AM Well, if you remember back in '93 we had those two blizzards which dropped 20+ inches and 30+ inches around New England. The intensity of those storms was blamed on an abundance of tiny particles of volcanic ash hanging in the atmosphere after the recent erruption of Mt. Pinatubo, and that was in the Pillipines! With the particularly volatile Pacific storm season and the impening erruption of Mt. Redoubt in Alaska... maybe this super storm is possible. I am not a meteorologist, nor am I going to insist that anyone attend a meeting to save the volcanos. :hihi:

Uncle Rob 01-30-2009, 11:09 AM I hope your did'nt get this info from Brad on 4 TV. he can't get it right even after the strom has passed.
RIROCKHOUND 01-30-2009, 11:14 AM From the weather channel
The next big weather maker will be a winter storm, forecast to develop Sunday night over the Northern Gulf, and track northeast, impacting the Eastern States Monday into Tuesday.
This has the potential to be a strong winter storm, impacting areas from the Gulf Coast, through the New England States. However, the exact track and intensity still remain very uncertain.
For now, the general thinking is that heavy snow and wind could impact parts of the Interior Northeast, Upper Ohio Valley, eastern Tennessee Valley and southern Appalachians.
Wind, rain, and possible flooding could impact eastern areas of the New England States, including the bigger cities.
Rain will initially impact the Southeastern States, but also has the potential to end as snow and wind as the storm moves northeast.
BasicPatrick 01-30-2009, 11:17 AM Damn it
I been so busy with so many fisheries management issues that I completely missed the news about "The Big Storm".
Raven, I can't thank you enough. I would have woke up in a couple days and who knows if I would have made it through at all. At least know I know and have a decent chance at survival.
Ok...I still go time to get a few things ready.
1. Fill 55 gallon barell with beach sand in case it is only a few feet of snow...check
2. Fill 55 gallon barell with gasoline and put in basement...on second thought the basement might flood so i'll put it in the living room.
3. Fill 55 gallon barell with potable water and put in kitchen because i don't want fumes from gas barell ruining the taste of my drinking water.
4. Put empty 55 gallon barell in bathroom...'nuf said
Ok, running out of time...no more typing...I gotta get movin.

:laughs:
"Hmmm...:smokin:....big drifts when you get out there to the Flemish Cap..."..
All kidding aside, it probably merits keeping an eye on it anyway - I hope Raven doesn't up having the last laugh -
Raven 01-30-2009, 11:27 AM Canal man is right on target--> a voice of reason at last
haven't you noticed how many volcano's are happening over seas lately???
i have.........
the volcano erupting in Alaska will be a contributing factor i'm sure...
with global warming you have essentially global melting......
more fresh water sitting on top of salt water equals more evaporation which equals more precipitation or rainfall
We have been lulled into a false sense of security concerning
our weather patterns for the last 25 years i'd say...
that may be about to change.... <---
i can remember a storm in the late 50's where the snow was up to the second story window sill of our house out in the back....
these youngins have no concept other than the storm of "78 "
~ but
of course the same thing can be said about hurricanes
and the big one in 38 didn't teach us a dammed thing
we did not learn.... we are sitting ducks with so many homes on our coastline now,,,,
i know you find it hard to believe that the "Boy crying WOLF"
the biggest art prankster here ....could actually be right- i dunno ??
and hey...i can't blame you...
but, i couldn't have a clear conscience if i had never said anything
especially if i learned someone not prepared had died.....
i was told this by a very serious native American Indian
so - what's it gonna hurt?
to have some extra cans of beans
bottled water, steaks, and necessities in the house or flash lights
with working batteries HUH?
i live this survival business every single damn day ...
and when i sit in front of my wood stove in a burnt rocking chair
i can still see my breath in these frigid temperatures.
i always say ...what if... and look at the worst case scenario
half the wood is in - a 1/2 cord or so...
ok back to work
rivsie11 01-30-2009, 11:32 AM "We're all gonna die."
Raven 01-30-2009, 11:36 AM good job !
remember when katrina was mis- managed on the forecast
and it caught many by surprise........
The Dad Fisherman 01-30-2009, 11:37 AM Well, if you remember back in '93 we had those two blizzards which dropped 20+ inches and 30+ inches around New England.
If that was the one that hit on Thursday and the other that hit on Friday into Saturday...I remember them. Right after I finally finished all the shoveling and got to sit down in the house to relax, I had to get up and take my wife to the hospital....that was the night my Son was born.
Crafty Angler 01-30-2009, 11:43 AM Rav, when it comes to weather events, believe me, I take the world serious -
Outside of old fish pictures, the other thing I collect is stuff regarding the '38 Hurricane - I've got the actual ProJo printed on September 22, 1938, it's amazing to read it - and I grew up hearing that stuff from my parents and the rest of my family and their friends here in Newport.
And no, wisenheimer, I wasn't there at the time...:fishslap:
But I do remember Carol in '54 and it scared the crap out of me as a little kid - some pretty vivid memories for a 5 year old going around with my dad after it passed -
Missed the '78 Blizzard, though - I had just driven to FL with a buddy that week and the day it hit I was sitting in Palm Beach nursing a sunburn and drinking a cold beer...:gu:
Raven 01-30-2009, 12:21 PM Karl - it's gonna be a three bottle storm i think :uhuh:
---------------------------------------------------------------
Crafty i was living in the mountains out west in "78"
so - i really have no concept either.... but from the
stories i've heard and movies i have seen on it...
i will endeavor to practice the boy scouts motto
---------------------------------------------------------------------
geesh......
i'm already half pooped out and will have a nice cold beer now... :)
last one too....
i have about 4 wheel barrows to go... then i'm done
because if the power went out again (without wood)
....we couldn't survive here very long !
-----------------------------------------------------------------
i even have a battery operated shower... too
TDF the red cross has all that info

A few paths to choose from: Well, by now you've heard about the potential for a big winter storm. The hype machine is already in full-effect by some. Let's take a more rational look at the storm.
The one factor everyone needs to remember is that the potential winter storm is still 3 to 4 days away. Computer weather models have a tendency to flip-flop between different forecast scenarios from one model run to another.
A model run, by the way, is the time when a computer program produces a possible future weather scenario given the atmospheric conditions at the present time. Generally speaking, this is done about 2 to 4 times a day (a few weather models, however, are run every 2 to 3 hours).
So with that information in hand, it's quite difficult to hang your hat on a definitive forecast for this winter storm. The one thing we can say for certain is that there will be a winter storm over the eastern third of the country beginning on Monday and through all of Tuesday.
Computer weather models have been depicting two different storm tracks which you can see below:
Possible storm tracks
The interior track (Georgia to western Pennsylvania) will spell out very heavy snow (and in some cases possible blizzard conditions) for the the Appalachians and into western Pennsylvania and western New York. Heavy rain would fall along the East Coast including the I-95 corridor.
The more eastern track (Georgia to New Jersey/Long Island) would result in a heavy snowfall for locations east of the Appalachians including the big cities of the Northeastern I-95 corridor.
Models are currently trending toward the more eastern track but the finer details remain up in the air including the intensity of the storm and the speed of movement.
Keep it here at weather.com and The Weather Channel as we continue to fine-tune the forecast today and during the weekend.
Finally, we have one more thing to mention. In terms of destruction and costliness, this storm will come nowhere even close to the historic ice storm which struck Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas and Kentucky. In fact, there will be little to no ice associated with this storm. It will be your classic winter storm complete with heavy snow, high winds, and cold temperatures.
Raven 01-30-2009, 03:20 PM I hope you are right.:claps:

A 100 inchs of snow sounds like alot, but not uncommon around the Great Lakes. One year in the late 90's Pulaski had 96 inches dropped in a 24 hour period which broke a record somewhere in Colorado back in 1939. Watertown is infamous for their big storms due to lake effect.
The difference is they are always prepared up there.

fishgolf 02-01-2009, 09:33 AM Finally! A place to talk about the Blizzard of 78!
52" of snow in downtown Providence. Stuck there from the Monday morning of the storm until Thursday morning.
Marriott Hotel. Food ran out on Monday night. Had one blueberry pancake on Tuesday, after taking some supplies of a trailer truck. On Thursday, we walked to Attleboro on the Rte 95 on divider in platform shoes (it was the seventies after all...). We fell down a lot...
Got back to CT on Sunday. The car we drove in was found in April and impounded. It was stuck in a pile of snow at a gas station on a corner - we had to abandon it (fiat spyder convertible...). Our boss had to drive through Massachusetts to get us back to CT. Ok... done.
Thanks for listening.
RIROCKHOUND 02-01-2009, 09:47 AM From Accuweather.. one of the few with the cajones to post long range predictions...
striperman36 02-01-2009, 10:08 AM Wife has surgery in hartford tuesday, not a good travel for there.
NWS is saying models have the storm tracking east of the CWA and we would only have a light covering in front and perhaps a wrap around comma after, this looks like the comma could be pretty cold, 1" or less of moisture 10-15 X factor for snow.
Weatherunderground is dead on it too.
he old stalled cold frontal boundary provides a ribbon of strengthening baroclincy allowing for the surface low to intensify as it reaches our latitude. Intense deformation band of snow in the cold conveyor flow develops on the backside of the low on Tuesday and Tuesday night bringing significant amounts of snow across the Northeast within 100-150 miles of the coast down to the northern Mid-Atlantic and extending north into much of New England. As the mid-level low pressure features aloft approaches the coast secondary development occurs later Tuesday night as the primary shears out keeping snow over the region until Wednesday morning. This solution has the potential to drop a foot or more of snow across a wide region of the Northeast. QPF’s range from three-quarters of an inch to an inch and a half in both the NAM/GFS. This snow would also be rather fluffy as cold air gradually incorporates itself into the circulation of the storm system from the north. Snow ratios should range from 12-16:1 or higher near the end of the storm as max omega intersects a moist snow growth region in the deformation axis. The SREF plumes also have decent support for this scenario as the SREF mean precip over the Northeast ranges from a half inch to an inch in the above mentioned areas with many plume diagrams showing an inch or more of QPF.
So not a lot of moisture - QPF but a lot of snow - 12-16:1
Pete_G 02-01-2009, 10:10 AM The National Weather Service admits they don't have a clue about the storm at this point. Sorry about the caps, that's how they post these discussions:
.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY...
THE MODELS CONTINUE TO STRUGGLE AND FLIP FLOP ON A POTENTIAL STORM
SYSTEM FOR SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND. THEY ARE HAVING A TOUGH TIME
FIGURING OUT HOW MUCH TROUGH AMPLIFICATION WILL OCCUR WITH NORTHERN
STREAM ENERGY. THEY ALSO ARE NOT SURE ON WHICH PIECE OF ENERGY THEY
WANT TO CAPTURE AND HOW CLOSE TO THE COAST THE SYSTEM WILL TRACK.
THERE IS NO POINT IN GOING INTO SPECIFIC DETAILS OF EACH
MODEL...SINCE MOST HAVE NOT SHOWN MUCH CONSISTENCY AND HAVE BEEN
VERY UNSTABLE FROM RUN TO RUN. THE ONLY THING WE CAN SAY IS THAT
SINCE THE MODELS GOT AWAY FROM THE INLAND BOMB SCENARIO...THE ECMWF
HAS BEEN THE MOST CONSISTENT AND STABLE WITH A LESS AMPLIFIED
SOLUTION AND A FURTHER EAST TRACK. THE ECMWF HAS BEEN FAR SUPERIOR
IN MOST OF THESE SITUATIONS THE LAST FEW YEARS...SO UNTIL WE SEE IT
GO FOR A MAJOR WINTER STORM WE WILL KEEP THE FORECAST ON THE MORE
CONSERVATIVE SIDE. HOWEVER...THE 00Z ECMWF MODEL DID TREND A BIT
FURTHER WEST FROM ITS LAST FEW RUNS...SO THIS WILL HAVE TO BE
CLOSELY WATCHED.
ALL IN ALL...THE AMERICAN MODELS AND THEIR ENSEMBLES ARE CLOSER TO
THE COAST/STRONGER AND HAVE A MUCH BIGGER IMPACT THAN THE INTERNATIONAL
MODELS. LIKE WE SAID BEFORE...WE WILL LEAN TOWARDS THE ECMWF
SOLUTION BASED ON ITS TRACK RECORD...BUT ALSO WILL TAKE INTO ACCOUNT
SOME OF THE AMERICAN MODELS INTO OUR FORECAST. REGARDLESS...ALL THE
MODELS DO HAVE A CLASSIC INVERTED TROUGH SETUP...SO WE FEEL THAT WE
WILL GET AT LEAST SOME SNOW PULLED BACK INTO THE REGION.
THEREFORE...RIGHT NOW WE FEEL THE BEST FORECAST IS FOR A LIGHT TO
MODERATE SNOWFALL ACROSS MUCH OF THE REGION SOMETIME LATE MONDAY
NIGHT INTO EARLY WEDNESDAY. THIS IS NOT SET IN STONE THOUGH AND
SINCE THE MODELS HAVE BEEN SO UNSTABLE THE LAST FEW DAYS...WE DO NOT
WANT TO RULE ANYTHING OUT. THIS INCLUDES THE MORE INTENSE AMERICAN
MODEL SOLUTIONS WHICH WOULD BRING A SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL TO MUCH OF
THE REGION.
ONE OF THE INTERESTING THINGS ABOUT THIS FORECAST IS THE AMERICAN
MODELS ARE CLUSTERED ON ONE SIDE WITH THE INTERNATIONAL MODELS ON
THE OPPOSITE SIDE. THE AMERICAN MODELS HAVE BETTER RESOLUTION...BUT
THAT DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE CORRECT. WE WILL JUST HAVE TO WAIT AND
SEE HOW THINGS PAN OUT AND HOPE THEY COME INTO BETTER AGREEMENT OVER
THE NEXT 24 HOURS. RIGHT NOW WE WILL LEAN TOWARDS THE ECMWF...BUT
KEEP ALL OPTIONS OPEN.
WILL RUN WITH CHANCE POPS MONDAY NIGHT...AND LIKELY POPS TUESDAY
AND TUESDAY NIGHT. WILL PROBABLY HOLD ONTO SOME CHANCE POPS ON
WEDNESDAY MORNING WITH UPPER LEVEL TROUGH STILL TO OUR WEST. IF THE
MODELS COME INTO BETTER AGREEMENT...LATER SHIFTS WILL WANT TO
UPGRADE TO CATEGORICAL POPS. EVEN THOUGH WE THINK WE WILL AT LEAST
GET SOME PRECIPITATION...THE MODELS ARE ALSO STRUGGLING WITH TIMING
SO WILL KEEP THINGS IN THE LIKELY RANGE.
AS FOR PRECIPITATION TYPE...THINK IT WILL BE MAINLY SNOW OVER MOST
OF THE REGION. HOWEVER...SOUTHEAST OF THE I-95 CORRIDOR THERE WILL
LIKELY BE SOME BOUNDARY LAYER ISSUES AT TIMES RESULTING IN SOME
LIQUID PRECIPITATION. IF THE DEEPER FURTHER WEST SOLUTIONS
VERIFY...BOUNDARY LAYER ISSUES COULD PUSH EVEN FURTHER NORTHWEST.
THIS FURTHER COMPLICATES AN ALREADY EXTREMELY CHALLENGING FORECAST!
REGARDLESS OF WHAT HAPPENS SOME VERY COLD AIR WILL LIKELY MOVE INTO
THE REGION ON WEDNESDAY BEHIND THE DEPARTING STORM SYSTEM.
DEPENDING ON JUST HOW INTENSE THE STORM BECOMES WILL DETERMINE JUST
HOW COLD IT GETS...BUT TEMPERATURES WILL LIKELY BE SIGNIFICANTLY
BELOW NORMAL.
striperman36 02-01-2009, 10:13 AM Here's the weatherman's dilemma
No consensus in the models across the board -
US (GFS/NAM) shows the Mega-Storm
European (UKMET) shows it going way east
Canadian models(GGEM, ECMWF) are in the middle
This winter the GFS has been pretty accurate, but with the variance, even in models from run to run has almost everyone just shrugging
In the middle of the very snowy American models and the out-to-sea UKMET lies the Canadian GGEM and the ECMWF. These models have trended west over their last couple of runs but not as extreme as the GFS/NAM or SREF’s. They take low pressure about 100-150 miles further offshore than the American models with some light to moderate QPF, generally under a half inch, in the deformation banding on the backside of the storm. This would still give areas within 50-75 miles of the coast a 2-6” snowfall, roughly a half to a third of the output of the GFS/NAM.

JohnnyD 02-01-2009, 04:06 PM In a serious note, if we do get a lot of snow, a fair number of towns and school systems will be screwed.
This past little storm, Mansfield almost had to call a delay the following day because the school's snow budget is completely dry. They plowed the day before, but didn't drop a grain of sand because there's no budget for it. My roommate is a teacher at the High School and was talking to the Principal. If we get much more snow this season, they have no idea where the money is going to come from to remove it.
This is happening after they just had a budget meeting that resulted in a deficit equal to 80 teacher's jobs.
spence 02-01-2009, 04:26 PM Back home in Iowa they stopped plowing roads because they don't have the budget, and they're in pretty good fiscal condition.

"One wild card that the atmosphere could still play is this: a lack of moisture. Some potential exists that the needed moisture would veer away to the east leaving the region with a relatively minor storm. This factor will be among several that AccuWeather.com will continue to follow keenly."

My understanding from him is that the school has their own snow removal budget for areas on school grounds. This includes the sub-contractors they hire to plow when they need extra help and the sand purchase budget.
One thing I have noticed consistently in the this area (Mansfield/Plainville/Foxboro) is that it seems towns are very rarely dropping sand, and never dropping salt. This goes for the entire winter so far this year.

I understand now JohnnyD. St Mary's has an inner courtyard play area, but rarely lets the kids out there now that there is snow in it.
The gym floor needs to get resurfaced every year after being abused by schools shoes.
The DPW sandpile is down by the animal shelter off of Fruit street.
I was doing my normal Sunday morning volunteering at the shelter and saw numerous private citizens pulling up to the now dwindling sand pile for their own sand fix.
There is absolutely no salt in down unless it is at the DPW on 106E.

vanstaal 02-04-2009, 06:20 AM From the weather channel
