View Full Version : Old Popper
missing link 01-30-2009, 03:56 PM Well my wife Karen was over one her clients houses talking about families and looking at pictures. They came across some pictures of some big bass caught along time ago.
So the woman also had shadow box with this in it ( attached pics)
I kind of figured some of you would like to see these, I have no other info about the Man or the plug and don't want to start anything.
Someone on the site might have some more info or even had a chance to meet the builder of this plug I know his name is on the small story hand written
I don't add much to the site hope you enjoy the pic's

Raven 01-30-2009, 06:22 PM you chime in always at the very right moment
that's a very interesting design actually because
it appears to be a spitter plug that sprays water
with the front curved piece. I like it.
thanks for posting the Unique find !
well done man ! :btu:
BigFish 01-30-2009, 07:46 PM That reads like "sour grapes"???
missing link 01-30-2009, 08:00 PM WHAT ?????????????????????
BigFish 01-30-2009, 08:06 PM That paragraph reads like they are somehow upset that Stan Gibbs made a name for himself and somehow stole the idea for a popper?? Thats how it reads to me??
After re-reading thats exactly what it says?

BigFish 01-30-2009, 09:21 PM ML....easy there. I think you are over reacting? Not stirring anything up. Just noting what was written on that note in the picture. I did enjoy the pics and what was in them. As I said I was just commenting on the content of the note. I did not make it up as its right there in black and white and I was simply making an observation. As for the personal slander towards me and my "short famed life" (too funny).....I think its a bit uncalled for. I have been nothing but cordial and friendly with you and yours and do not appreciate the comments but hey....you are entitled to your opinion I guess. If anyone here thinks that anything has ever gone to my head then they don't know me too well.
Peace out ML.

BigBo 01-30-2009, 10:07 PM I don't know ML. Not to take sides or anything, but it does kind of read like Larry observed.
What do I know though? It is a nice piece of fishing history and I'm sure it brings his family great pride and memories.
Squid kids Dad 01-30-2009, 10:25 PM Trying to send you PM message but it seems you dont want to accept any..oh well
Slipknot 01-31-2009, 06:54 AM easy does it guys
let's not jump to conclusions about anything here, either of you.
Link, I'm glad you posted the popper, it's great to learn some more plug history. I've seen plugs that look similar.
I didn't read it like it was any kind of sour grapes guys, it read to me like the woman was proud of her dad. If someone like Stan Gibbs was inspired by something, she deserves to be proud.
Link, stick around, winter is almost around the corner, sun is coming up sooner every day :kewl:
numbskull 01-31-2009, 07:41 AM This is a cool post that has taken an ugly turn. The popper may well antedate Gibbs. The hook hanger system and "crude" face shape seem older than the Gibbs version. Gibbs' first popper has the same color scheme as well. Everybody gets a start somewhere, and perhaps this is where Gibbs got his. It is also natural that a guy who felt he had the original idea might feel bitter that someone else became so successful developing it. Takes nothing away from Gibbs, however, since he obviously moved on to develop many great original designs of his own. Thanks for posting it.
cool plug. I like the sheet metal idea.
tattoobob 01-31-2009, 11:58 AM I don't know but that's not the way I took the writing
Sounds like she is proud that A plug her grandfather made became famous. and having a window box dedicated to him proves it. thanks for sharing Link
Swimmer 01-31-2009, 12:34 PM The daughter is proud no doubt, but "made a bundle mass producing similar poppers" is not patting Stan Gibbs on the back and saying atta boy go get em. Thier is a negative connotation in those seven words. I think Linkie overreacted just a tad. Bigfish' interpretation is certainly innocent enough and wasn't meant to be sarcastic. Just his subjective response to something he read.
That being said I enjoyed seeing the picture. It is really unique using the sheet metal as a hood to push the water. Thank you for posting it.
BigFish 01-31-2009, 01:16 PM Thanks Frank! You hit the nail right on the head! I have no doubt the woman is proud, and rightfully so. Great pics! I love the old stuff! I have that same book that is in there....its called "Striper" The Story of Fish and Man written by John Cole from Maine....real great book if you can find it!
ProfessorM 01-31-2009, 07:24 PM cool history lesson. Again the machinist's are making their mark.:rtfm:
Sheet metal? , I see no sheet metal. The pins are for the hangers I would think but maybe just can't see em as it has a screw eye in front and none for belly hooks as it seems to have used hangers. I could be totally wrong though as I am at least once every day and haven't been today, yet.
BigBo 01-31-2009, 07:30 PM I kept looking at it many times too. I don't see any sheet metal.
ProfessorM 01-31-2009, 07:36 PM yeah I think the thru pins that look like nails held hangers for the hooks or the hooks themselves. Looks like something a machinist would concoct, friggin nit wits.
Flaptail 02-01-2009, 09:33 AM As I own the first Gibbs plug ever made which is a slant faced popper and having been told by Stan of the story of it's development I was very excited to see your post. Thanks for sharing as it lends some more history to the Gibbs legacy. Stan readily admitted seeing something he thought had a lot of potential as well as some freshwater CCBco poppers which he took note of also.
Thats a bit of Striper fishing history she has there. Tell her to take good care of it.
Flap.
Backbeach Jake 02-01-2009, 02:57 PM I saw the color and thought of Gibbs #1 immediately. Then waited for Flap's input..cool stuff thanks.
I kept looking at it many times too. I don't see any sheet metal.
everything that is red is metal. the wood is just a tapered dowel. look closely.
ProfessorM 02-01-2009, 06:53 PM I have to disagree with you. looks like all wood to me. link go over there and check will you.
I stared at it a while longer and might see it being metal but I just don't know. I'm so confused
hmmm. I think your right PM
ProfessorM 02-01-2009, 07:31 PM LOL. great I start to agree with you and now you are agreeing with my first observation. Reason I think it might be wood is it looks as if the screw eye has worn into the wood above it, maybe while screwing it into the plug. I don't think that would do that to metal.
:hihi: what changed my mind was the turning marks from the lathe show up in the area that looks like its metal.
ProfessorM 02-01-2009, 09:21 PM Also the natural wood color under the maroon paint too.
I wish my Dad was still alive. In the last photo you see a ID badge from GTD. My Dad worked there for over 40 years as a machinist and I went to high school at you guessed it Turners Falls High(named after Capt. Turner whom slaughtered entire group of peaceful indians :topic:) Had some Desautels in school also. Small world Cool Story. Thanks for sharing it Link.
