View Full Version : Large handcarved finished
the greek 01-30-2009, 05:04 PM Finished these guys up. They turned out to be a real project. I don't know how the musky guys do those real big baits all the time. They took several coats of clear to get where they are and could probably use another to get them real glassy. Alot more materials than I would have suspected all the way around. Epoxy, plumbers epoxy, wire etc. The two hook ones are 9" long and 1 3/4 around at the widest part. The smaller one is from the same template just modified a bit. The Rebel looking one is a body that Copycat gave me and I finished up. I need some tails for these and I will be seeing a couple guys tomorrow who could probably help me out there. I swam the two big ones with two different lips and saw almost no difference. I was going to try them with a third hook on the tail but liked them the way they were with two and didn't even try it. These were fun but I can't wait to get back to my small stuff.

fumifish 02-01-2009, 09:06 AM nice plugs.. i would like to try and make handcarves... one day..
pbadad 02-01-2009, 09:10 AM Extremely tremendous. This hand carving thing is the niche I would like to do. It would break up the monotony of spinning. Is this a topic that can be touched on a Plugfest?
saltydog 02-01-2009, 12:14 PM pbadad, this may be a DUMB question, BUT why would you want to Hand Carve when you can SPIN THEM:smash:Id give anything to be able to spin them:) an get a beautifly shaped body instead of shaping an sanding all day long ,Id bet that NOT one of the plugs I have ever built, has been the same, they all have there owne personality DIFFERENT, take a look at the SCHOOL of TROUT I posted for
PLUG- FEST man there ALL a little DIFFERENT, if I had SPUN them they would have looked 100% better:uhuh:
GOOD LUCK GOOD PLUGGIN
steelhead 02-01-2009, 09:07 PM Carving is a world unto itself.... Don't do it to save time.... The trade is you can get some pretty amazing profiles and action. Just don't get started on the lexan lips.... Makes you appreciate metal lips and lip slots real fast!
mikecc 02-01-2009, 09:49 PM Beautiful work
the greek 02-02-2009, 05:23 PM Thanks for the kind words everyone. These were a nice change of pace from the same old same old, and a fun build.

I agree 100% on the lexan lips. You really have to be on the money with your angles and hardware placement. I like the ability to be able to tune things a bit with a metal lip. Kinda stuck with what you got with lexan. And making slots is a pain.
lazzyone 02-02-2009, 05:51 PM WOW..nice shape and paint!!
