View Full Version : Favorite Suds?
MarshCappa 02-09-2009, 02:45 PM I didn't want to hijack a previous thread on drinking so I started this one. My favorite fishing beer is Gansett. What's yours? I seem to drink the stuff by the gallons in the summer. :cheers2: Can't get enough of it. I'm a big fan of the Buzz Bay Brew as well. Cape Cod Beer makes awesome brews as well. What about the rest of your guys and gals? What's your favorite?
MarshCappa 02-09-2009, 02:47 PM Oh and I can't leave out the Cisco Brew on ACK! I freakin love that place!
RIJIMMY 02-09-2009, 02:55 PM Oh and I can't leave out the Cisco Brew on ACK! I freakin love that place!
Cisco brew - Moor Porter is the best beer I have had in my life.
JoeBass 02-09-2009, 02:59 PM Long Trail Ale. Always good. Always consistent.
The Dad Fisherman 02-09-2009, 03:05 PM Best beer I ever had was a place in Pennsylvania......General Lafayette IPA.....unbelievable
Long Trails are good...i like their blackberry wheat...good stuff.
I'm more of a Hop Head than anything so I like IPA's and ESB's mostly.....but occasionally enjoy a Wheat beer.....had a nice Blue Moon Belgian White the other night.
texican 02-09-2009, 03:10 PM Dos Equis :cheers2:
Mike P 02-09-2009, 03:18 PM A fishing beer? Anything that's cold, and preferably free :rotf2:
Although a free 'Gansett might still be overpriced :yak6:
Sorry--too many bad high school flashbacks with that name.

A little off track, but the Triple 8 Vodka they produce is excellent. I've never had the beer, though.
I don't usually drink while fishing, but when at home I mostly drink ales during the winter. I've just discovered Smithwick's and have been enjoying it a lot lately. Summertime is more lagers for me.
CaptMike 02-09-2009, 03:23 PM A little off track, but the Triple 8 Vodka they produce is excellent. I've never had the beer, though.

Triple 8 also makes a rum called "Hurricane", they don't distill it they just blend a couple of carribbean rum and age it but it is AWESOME! My favorite beers are landshark, kalik, corona and amstel. Corona and amstel are the only ones I can get in cans so they usually find their way on the boat. Gansetts have been known to make an appearance if they're really cold with a little lime.
CaptMike 02-09-2009, 03:24 PM I like the Cape Cod beer too, especially the summer one and who could forget wachusett blueberry?
RIJIMMY 02-09-2009, 03:30 PM I agree, no beer when fishing for me.
The Dad Fisherman 02-09-2009, 03:36 PM Although a free 'Gansett might still be overpriced :yak6:
My Grandfather would drink Gansetts.....warm. Thats how he liked them.
He would open up a 16 oz.can and leave it on the kitchen counter....come by every hour or so and pour a little into a small glass and drink it....come back in an hour for another little glass...take him 4-5 hours to drink a can.
Back Beach 02-09-2009, 03:37 PM Redlite cocktails do it for me= a nice redbull first, then skoal mint(separately).
I never drink alcohol while fishing.
Circlehook 02-09-2009, 03:48 PM I would fall asleep on a rock if I drank before fishing.
At home I like Wachusett blueberry, and if I want to drink large amounts, michelob or bud light.

That sounds really good. I dipped for 8 years, been chewing nicorette for 3 yrs. Got sick of waking up with leather skinned cheeks. I am still down for a dip here or there after drinking though.
freebie 02-09-2009, 03:58 PM blue moon belgian white for me, or newcastle
jack and coke
oh you meant beuhs. i have 3, new castle, blue moon, and sea dog blueberry
i never drink when fishing either except if when fishing with friends and we're on a beach.

I bought a Storm Pack years ago. It consisted of tequilla, gin, bourbon, and rum. They don't make the tequilla anymore because of permitting issues but i still have 3/4 of a bottle and have a sip from time to time. The bourbon, rum, and vodka are the best on the market in my opinion.
The Dad Fisherman 02-09-2009, 04:06 PM I don't drink when I fish either......but definitely enjoy a few pops after.
I always throw a couple on the ice in my eel bucket so i can have a couple for after

Sounds like you had a run in with your share of GIQ's Mike -
I spent a whole summer trying to save money while I was working for college $$$ and pretty much drank Narrie draft exclusively - boy, that was ugly.
Almost took the T.P. out of the bathroom and replaced it with a sponge that summer...:hs:
Personally, I like Amstel - but you'll never find me FWI - I don't drink and fish, never have. Don't fish or boat with people who do either - I'd hate to have to depend on somebody who was 'faced if I was in a jam -
However, I do have a nice little fridge full of cold ones in my tackle room for when I get back home...:gu:
ThomCat 02-09-2009, 04:40 PM :cheers2:Grab a Heiny, old habits die hard. Might sample a couple tonite, make sure they still taste the same (as yesterday) :tooth:
Rob Rockcrawler 02-09-2009, 04:55 PM I do the gansetts as well, that or amstels when fishing. I will have 1 after about 3 hours. Anymore than that and i will crack my skull. Southern Comfort is the block island drink for some reason.
Pete F. 02-09-2009, 05:07 PM Another GIQ victim, that's when the drinking age was 21 in Mass before they changed it to 18.
Now I don't care too much, in fact why do you think they call them taste buds anyways. I've moved up from genny.
But I can't and don't, drink and fish. About 9am to put me to sleep is fine.
Coors lite for the summer and Harpoon IPA for the winter. BTW stay far away from the triple8 Gale force gin, its the stuff nightmares are made of.
Uncle Matt 02-09-2009, 06:39 PM Once back sitting by the fire I've been known to consume a few Presidente's, Amstel's, or Tsingtao's. Mmmm beer.....
keeperreaper 02-09-2009, 06:49 PM Miller Lite and skoal mint.
Squid kids Dad 02-09-2009, 07:00 PM Nothing fancy here..Ice cold Bud lite:love:

moosh 02-09-2009, 08:15 PM Pabst blue ribbon, a few after a day of fishing
leo33 02-09-2009, 08:29 PM a nice cold Guinness.

I really like the rum. It's good on the rocks or with tonic. I haven't tried the Gale Force Gin but I'm not a huge gin drinker.
RickBomba 02-09-2009, 08:47 PM Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale when it's cold out (ice fishin brew). I definately like the ciders, like Magners, in the summer. Not really suds, but there's some carbonation in there!
BassDawg 02-09-2009, 11:28 PM in 35 some odd years of consuming brews,,,,,,,,,,
i've prolly tasted over 100's of beers and have
found that i now approach beer from a seaonal perspective.
my favorite all time winter beer is Samuel Smith's
Oatmeal Winter Harvest
in the springtime i'll reach for an
Anchor Steam or Pacifico or Rolliing Rock
summertime calls for yer favorite Booberry, among others;
Coddington's Blueberry Blonde is delicious
Boston Beer Works Blueberry or Watermelon is equally appealing before a SOX Game.
fall calls for a various sundry of Octoberfests and i was pleasantly surprised by,
Harpoon's Octoberfest at the OTW celebration last year.
Sam's October is an autumnal staple and rightly so, yummy!
my five favorites for everyday drinking are
(though i no longer tip them daily) in no particular order:
Stella Artois, BASS Ale, Sam Adams, Red Stripe, and Black & Tan.
i also never imbibe while feeshing, though afterwards sumtimes.
:bl: :bl: :bl:
i must give honorable mention to
Tsing Tao, Bertolli, and BBWorks' Oatmeal Buck Stout.

Purity, Body, Flavor - nothing like an ice cold Ballantine Ale tall can in between bombing out tins.
CaptMike, Kalik would be nice, but they don't sell them here! I dragged a couple of 6's home one year, and they just aren't the same.
Newcastles are real nice as long as they are fresh, right off of the truck. Like St Pauli Girls, if they sit at the store for more than a couple of weeks they start to turn. There is a liquor store that closes for the winter in Wellfleet on 6 close to PJ's clam shack, when it opens in March they restock with fresh beer and I'll drop in there and do the newkies for a couple of weeks.
Bass Ale is nice for a change of pace. Stella Artois are too.
JFigliuolo 02-10-2009, 08:33 AM Don't drink while fishing... But my current fave is Berkshire Brewing Co's Drayman Porter. OUTSTANDING!

ring any bells?

You might want to check it out again. My Dad said the same thing as you Mike and was really surprised when tried it again. The quality of the brew declined in the last years of production but they have it dialed in now. After fishing I'll toss back a couple and they go down real smooth, espicially if ice cold.

Kalik was bought by anheisuer-busch about a year ago and they're doing some limited release along the east coast now. It's the same beer made in the same brewery but it probably loses something in the transport. One liquor store I go to orders it for me. I wish they imported the cans that would be awesome for the boat/beach. Honestly even if they're not as good here as in the bahamas it still feels good to see that label haha. Regardless to each his own.

I agree with the ice cold part. To me gansett's are real easy going, they don't taste bad they just don't really have a strong taste at all kinda like busch or something like that. I like them, great cheap summer beer. I have a hard time finding them in anything bigger than a 6er though.

The Narragansett Bock is a nice, dark lager. It goes down real smooth. I also tried the regular Gansett lager and it was o.k. There are so many other good beers out there that I wouldn't buy it, but I'd take one from someone elses cooler.

I'll bet that without that pure Bahamian water they just don't taste the same -

Rocco34520 02-10-2009, 12:10 PM I cant drink yet. But ill def. second the Boston Beer Works Blueberry before a SOX game. Me and my dad go there anytime we go to a game and he always lets me have a sip.:gu:

Yes, I'll take the Mickey's, PBR, and Gennie Cream (Mikey will attest to those). Spent some time with Hamm's, but really liked the old Koch's Golden Anniversaries (pounders). They got me through college. Spirit Haus in Amherst used to sell the pounders for "The Special of the Beast" $6.66 for a case. Rocking roll good times!
Later,
Rick
RickBomba 02-10-2009, 09:43 PM And I was a big fan of the Yuengling! One of Naked #^&#^&#^&#^&y's favorites. I was in PA golfing in Allentown and we went to a distributor and filled the car with Yuengling...good stuff!
Saltheart 02-11-2009, 12:08 AM I cannot buy beer that tastes better than what I brew regardless of price. I'm not talking about the homebrew with a can of syrup and five pounds of cain sugar that we made in college. I am talking 26 years of brewing experience using grain , hops water and yeast only. At one stage of my brewing carreer I used to import my own Hallertau Mittlefreuh Hops directly from Germany. Once you get good at making it , its the best beer available anywhere. My favorite is my multiple brewing contest winner called Michaelbrau "The cats meow" Robust Porter. Its grainy and hoppy and has about 7% alchohol. :) All my beers get labeled Michaelbrau "The cats meow" . I used the phrase "The cats meow" since about 1986 or 87. I came very close to opening a brew pub in RI in 1986. Instead I decided to stick to Engineering and science and made the ceramics for NASA instead. Looking back at it , I should have opened the Brew Pub. :)
One beer that I sometimes buy that is pretty close to homebrew quality is Sam Smiths nut brown ale. There is also an Imperial Stout out there that I like but can't remember the name right now.
Remember this quote by Ben Franklin...... Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. Ben was a wise man. :)
OH , BTW , beer is for after fishing , not before.
fishbones 02-11-2009, 09:21 AM So I'm driving down 95 South in RI this morning on the way to work and I notice the car in fornt of me has a vanity plate that reads "PBRFAN". Naturally, I figure the person driving must be a big Pabst Blue Ribbon drinker. Maybe someone from this site based on the posts in this thread. As I got closer to the car, dissapointment set in as I noticed a sticker on the rear window for "Professional Bull Riding".

flyvice11787 02-11-2009, 07:37 PM Wow, where to start. I usually don't drink while fishing, except when I'm on someone else's boat, fishing for "fun". Then if the beer's icy cold, anything's good. As far as a favorite brand or style, that's tough. Not a big fan of the mass produced stuff as it's too bland for me. I lean towards microbrews and smaller volume imports. I love drinking seasonal stuff. You know, various Octoberfests and pumpkin ales during the fall, winter beers like Harpoon Winter Warmer and Sierra Nevada Celebration, etc. I gotta say I love just about everything from Southampton Ales & Lagers. It doesn't hurt that I live close enough to their brewpub to get everything off the tap as it comes out  (a must stop off on the way back from Montauk) :D. I like most of the stuff from Sam Adams, Harpoon, and Stone (some wicked good IPAs). Lately, I've been drinking a lot of Grimmbergen (Blonde and Double). Variety is good. Hmm... getting thirsty now. Gotta go :cheers2:.

PI guy 02-11-2009, 08:54 PM If only a few, Ipswich Ale (or Summer) or Smutty IPA. If more than a few, Miller Lite. Can't handle Skoal, Kodiak for me, if I'm going to forcefully remove my gums and lip it at least has to be moist!
Fish_Eye 02-12-2009, 03:17 AM After a hard day of fishing or during a night of wishing I was fishing there's nothing more refreshing than a Coddington Blueberry. I love a fresh black & tan, Sam Smith Nut Brown Ale and Oatmeal Stout in the winter. Great summer brews include Flying Dog Ale, Peroni and Pilsner Urquell.
Brian L 02-12-2009, 04:45 AM I've yet to find anything I like better than Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.

Mmmmm.....blooooberry...:gu:
Hey Mike, I'm thinking at some point before the season gets underway we oughta round up the Usual Suspects and convene at the Blooberry Factory - maybe post-TFCTFN and pre-RISAA....:uhuh:
CaptMike 02-12-2009, 11:50 AM oooops, my bad, bro!

FishnGrega 02-12-2009, 03:24 PM Pigs Ear, Brewed up in Woodstock, NH. Had it when I went to Laconia this past year for bike week. By far one of my favorite beers.
CaptMike 02-12-2009, 09:51 PM Bought some modelo for the first time tonight. Not bad a little skunky but refreshing. I really like the south american/carribbean style lagers. Carib, red stripe, corona and Kalik. All great fishing beers. Haha I could go on and on about this topic!
BOSOX 02-12-2009, 09:52 PM Hate the CC Red. I'm a big fan of the wheat/summer beers. Blue Moon is my fav. followed by Sam's Summa. Julius Echter is a great wheat beer if I can find it. I definetely can't drink those the entire evening, but they make for a great start...can't wait for spring
fishgolf 02-13-2009, 09:26 PM Stella. If none, then Pilsner Urquel
kippy 02-13-2009, 09:33 PM I don't drink while fishing but I do enjoy Harpoon IPA, Molson Ice, and Sam Winter Lager. Used to brew as well and make a mean pale ale..with the price of alcohol I might start up again..
I prefer mushrooms when i am rock hopping.
