Me and 2 friends launched out of weymouth mass this morning at 7 am for cod fishing. It was freezing cold but not cold enough to keep us from those awesome steaks waiting . We headed to nahant island, where we had great success the past weeks.Arriving at Nahant we spotted cod on the furuno and started jigging 17 oz jigs. One hour later we only managed 9 cod on the small side, definately not the fishing we experienced in the past couple of weeks. We decided to head out to the "b" buoy where we also had good luck previously, arriving about 2 miles north of the buoy I spot some nice schools and decide to stop and jig.We immediately started catching nice cod in th 15-20 lbs range, the action was non stop for a good half hour and then slowed down to no action at all.I decide to go back and start from our starting point and drift the same area again, "not so fast ! " my friend paul is hooked up to what seems to be the biggest cod of the day bye far,so me and my other friend look on until he brings the fish up. This really did seem like a big fish as the pole is bent over good and suddenly paul says " #^&#^&#^&#^& i lost him" , he reels fast to bring jig up so we can move and he brings a half of a cod head, and a damn huge head it was !! We all knew there was a porbeagle below, I have many charter friends who have experienced this same thing but i never have, especialy in the winter wich is porbeagle season. We switched our tld 25's and grabbed the penn 6/0's i had in the cabin. We start drifting and jigging and after about 45 minutes and 6 cod we decide to give up the porbeagle chase and get back to cod.We go back to our original drift start and the action lights up again non stop.one hour later the fishing gets slow again and were debating if e should make another drift, when suddenly my friend mikes reel starts screeming !! Hes yelling " hes on hes on" the shark probably was swimming without knowing he was hooked, but steadily swimming and the small tld with 25lbs braided was no match.I jumped to the helm and mike went to the bow trying to gain some line, hes getting soaked and freezing while were doing only 2-3 knts. This goes on for about a half hour but the fish dosnt seem to be fighting but just swimming, maybe just there nature ? The shark finaly decides to dive and the line is straight down with the rod ready to snap but we have no choice and have to take our chances.Mike is yelling for me to take the rod cause hes freezing and wet, I take the rod and this thing fealt like a giant blue fin were used to catching a couple of months ago minus the fast runs, but we dont have a 130 penn this time. Damn why did we put away the 6/0's . I just held pressure on this monster and watched the line go out very slowly, any more drag and the line would snap.Another 20 mins past and it seems like im able to gain line back in the reel little bye little when he decides to start swimming forward again.Paul takes the helm and we slowly gain line following the shark, Im now at the bow and know what mike went through, freeeeeeeeezing !!! I couldnt last any longer, and theres no way paul can come to the bow ( 6'3 320 lbs) so i tighten drag just a tad and start reeling in hard while boat is following.Somehow someway, after another 20 minutes we managed to be able to fish the shark from the cockpit, and we actualy started seeing this huge shade coming up from about 10-15' deep. Holy !!! This thing was huge i mean huge !! Us 3 have caught giant tuna reaching up to 800 lbs and one mako at 443 lbs so we know big, and this sucker was big !!! I could of swore it was a huge mako if i didnt know better. We are now scrambling figuring how the hell are we gonna do this, with this thing only 5'under water against the boat and we have no gaffs, and 40 lbs braided line with no leader. Paul gets a rope to try and tail him wich seemed like the only thing to do, i took out another rod and used the butt to try to push his huge head off and give us access to the tail, and suddeenly this sucker gives a boatside show, he wacks the side with his tail sounding as if the boat split in half, and then splashed us soaking wet in 27 degree weather, snapping that sewing thread and just took off in deeper water. DAMN !!!! that was a big fish, and we all think its world record caliber after looking at the igfa book, as silly as it sounds. We all estimate it to have been 10 ' at least and around 850 lbs .!! but the girth on it was unreal. I never hooked one of these before, but I would love to meet him some day again. I was wondering if anyone has caught one of these sharks? wow what a day , big game fishing in the winter in new england wooooo hoooo sorry for the long post, just had to tellya guys
Fish on !!
