View Full Version : F!@# CapitalOne
nightfighter 02-11-2009, 07:38 AM A CapitalOne rep called yesterday, a "courtesy call", to inform us that they were raising the interest rate on the credit card, from 4.7% to 14%......Not much of a balance on it and we've always been on time with payments. They said it was because of the tough economic environment..... That card was cut up and filed, so the rep could hear it being cut.
Eff them and all the other predatorial credit card companies and banks. They are one of the primary facilitators of this crisis. They were the ones loaning money to people who were broke. It was a case of broke people buying things on credit, and now the national credit card debt is around $14 Trillion!!!!
And CapitalOne wants us to help bail them out and pay for the people who don't pay their bills???????
striperman36 02-11-2009, 07:58 AM Isn't it wonderful?
My mailbox was destroyed during the dec storm by the plow, along with my bills. I missed the Jan payment date resulting in an increase from 4.7 to 26.44 appeal was rejected, said card is now shredded
I have paid off and shredded all my cards.
Cash only for me for the time being.
Duke41 02-11-2009, 08:01 AM I have a debit card and two AMEX cards. My moto If you can't pay by the end of the month dont buy it.
Swimmer 02-11-2009, 12:34 PM can go to hell. Its incredible how many times a week I get card apps. in the mail. Or you get the blank checks they want you to make out and spend.
JohnnyD 02-11-2009, 12:39 PM My moto If you can't pay by the end of the month dont buy it.
Bingo! I purchase everything with my Cabela's card, just to get the points, then pay the full balance at the end of the month. Haven't carried over a balance or paid a cent of interest in over 12 months.
I do it this way to preserve my credit, build my credit limit/score and make sure I have enough credit should a serious emergency come around.
saltfly 02-11-2009, 01:25 PM I send all their mail crap-ola back to them in the prepaid envelope provided. My way of recycling.
RIJIMMY 02-11-2009, 02:22 PM watch out for your mortgage cos too. We got a notice syaing they needed @ 2000k extra per year for escrow for tax and insurance. We called our town and the prop tax increase was like $80 a year and insurance had not changed. The mortgage co said they needed a $1600 buffer, we never had that before. We told them to screw and now pay our own prop tax and ins.
They just wanted to get extraz cash on hand. bstards

Stolen. I love this idea and will be using it.
I've called CrapitalOne about a dozen times asking them to take me off their list. Told them at one point that I was considering getting a card from them (and I was) but the blatant harassment made me wonder - if this is how they treat people they're trying to acquire, how poorly do they treat their customers.

Watch out for Discover too.
Striperknight 02-11-2009, 03:19 PM Bank of America was changing my due date and the address/state of where the payments went. They did this at least 5 times.
Sneaky.

sokinwet 02-11-2009, 06:32 PM They're all the same. I used to buy a lot of stuff from Cabelas with a Cabelas card and also used the card to to pay and track all my commercial striper bills. When the intro. rate on my BOA card expired I applied for a new one from my bank so I could transfer the BOA balance and close out the card. Cabelas sends me a notice decreasing the limit by 2/3's to $20 over my current balance. I called to ask why and they told me it was because a review of my credit report shows I had applied for a new card. I was BS and like an idiot I missed my next pmt. date by 1 day due to the "allow 5 days for mailing" BS. So they add a $39 late fee and because it now exceeded the max.limit another $39 overlimit fee! This went back and forth for 3 months x $78 per and I had a few not so pleasant conversations with them. I told them to eliminate the late and overlimit fees and I'd pay but they refused! I told them I'd pay when hell freezes over. Since my credit rating went down the sh..ter over 4 years of paying $14k out of $35K in my sons annual college tuition "out of pocket" their threats fell on deaf ears. I think they finally realized that collection calls from 20 year olds weren't getting any results and they offer me a buy out at $600 less than my balance. They won't credit me a couple of hundred bucks in fees but take a $600 loss on the account...and you wonder why banks are going down when they have genius's making decisions like this? Cash only for me now.
likwid 02-11-2009, 08:44 PM You mean they didn't sell off the account to a collections agency at pennies on the dollar?
Interesting.
Duke41 02-12-2009, 06:52 AM not yet make sure you get the deal in writting
Duke41 02-12-2009, 06:57 AM I am a commercial landlord because of this I end up suing some stiff on small claims court now and then. Over the years it has been amazing change in the make up of the cases. A few years ago it was mostly small business disputes, customers not paying for jobs. Now it is scumbag ambulance chasers that have purchased bad credit card debt for pennies on the dollar. They sit there and get judgement after judgement as the cardholders never seem to show up. I counted one scum bag last week had over 50 people. This crap is clogging up the courts. I asked the guy if this was the dream job he wanted as he went through law school. Told me to %$%$%$%$ off. hahahahahah true story
afterhours 02-12-2009, 08:17 AM only have a couple with balances which i'm aggressively paying off..chase is raising interest 3% - we have to pay for their bad business deciesions..'eff them.
RIROCKHOUND 02-12-2009, 08:29 AM I tease my wife for being a money nazi, BUT We only use a shell master card to get the gas rebates (makes a difference when it is 3.00 a gal+) and any thing else, like travel or online purchases, but we have never carried a balance over to the next month. nothing worse than paying interest on stuff you already bought and used! Everything else is either cash or debit card!
Wife has only Master Card and Discover and they both hate up. If their used, their paid off as soon as the bill comes in. Both pay us money at the end of the year and we pay 0 interest. Everything goes on these cards even if the money in in my pocket. Get about $250 a year out of them. I'm surprised they haven't dropped us !!!! No debit cards.............she doesn't believe in them and to easy to spend.
RIJIMMY 02-12-2009, 11:02 AM use the system to your advantage. I have a CC that pays 2% of my purchases to my kids 529 plan. We pay for EVERYTHING on it, even painting my house to heating oil. as long as I pay off the balance, it really adds up.
FishermanTim 02-12-2009, 11:32 AM If you can make their system work for you, all the better.
Some people will do the "transfer balance" game to get a lower interest rate for the transferred balance. Sure it saves some $ in interest, but you have to be vigilant and not miss a payment.
Once you miss one payment, they screw you.
I have only small incidental items that I cg=harge during the month, so my balance is typically under $30 on any given month.
What I did was purposely overpay by sending a payment of $100.00 to see what they would do.
Well, if you send more than what is due, and they credit your account the full payment amount, they HAVE to pay you interest on the balance that is carried over. They don't like that, so they sent me a check for the remaining balance.
I overpaid again for a lesser amount. Man, I love sticking it to them!
I also LOVE mailing thier crap offers and junk mail back to them.
I also return those blank checks with VOID written in permanent marker. Like I said, I like sticking it to them!

that is so great what is the minium amount you can over pay the %$%$%$%$ers
FishermanTim 02-12-2009, 06:07 PM I was sending in $100.00 to see what they would do.
They have, since the end of last year, started send me a check for whatever balance I had ovepaid by.
i guess they don't like having to pay out.
FishermanTim 02-12-2009, 06:10 PM I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if they once again changed their rules regarding overpayments so that they don't have to pay us interest.
We all know how diligent they are at letting the customers know when they change their rules, typically at a drop of the hat.
I still prefer to screw with them, fully within the boundaries of legal consumer practices.
PaulS 02-13-2009, 08:06 AM Ross, when they told you that, you should have told them to canc. the card right then. Don't escrow your taxes and Ins cause then the mortgage company get the interest on your money. Your foolish to not pay your CC bills on time and in full assuming you have the $.
Tim - what interest rate did they pay you?
Botton line, if you develop discipline it can save you $. I have all the discipline and my wife as none. Good luck!
TheSpecialist 03-03-2009, 10:25 AM BOA are the worst bloods#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&g leaches of all of them.... :cens:

Same thing happened to me. Countrywide. My payment jumped $500 for Dec, Jan, I ended up lowering the new ammount by $700 per month when I recalculated it. It took hours on the phone before I could get someone that could do simple math ( that's all I can do) and agree with me.
blue oyster 03-05-2009, 05:53 PM one thing you got to admit is capitol one has very funny tv commercials
We have 2 cards that sent us a notice that the rate would change. You had the option to not accept the rate hike but then you cant keep using the account (just pay off the balance and the account will be closed) so what? in 6 months they will be begging for you back.....
