is there a preferred ratio backing to mono on a 50 class reel?
what lb test backing is used?
is the added line backing provides, worth the risk if the reel can hold 420yds of 80lb mono?

It depends on how you're going to use the reel. If your trolling just load it with mono and go fishing. If you're going to chunk with it in deep water and are never going to start the boat, then load it with 100 or 130-pound Jerry Brown braid and put a 100 foot topshot of mono on it. You may need the extra line capacity fighting a big fish from a dead boat.

On my 50's for trolling I put Momoi 80 and load it up. As MM said chunk 100 yard topshot to 130 spectra for line capacity.

thanks guys,
it's trolling or live bait on the bank, so I think I'll go with 80lb mono.
I think the dogs killed any thought of chunking out there.
4 months to go .. . . .

We spooled with 600yds of 80lb master braid w/ 60lb or 80lb mono topshot. Ended up with ~800yds on the 50's...

Most of mine are spooled 2/3 80lb dacron and then a chinese finger splice into 80 lb momoi. This is the same way that we do the 80's and 130's.
Last season I did 2 new ones with 130lb master braid with the loop to loop to 100yd 80lb diamond topshots from Basil. I felt lazy buying premade top-shots but they really are quick and easy.
I also make sure to wet-pack the reels whenever we respool. I don't know if its really critical with the 50's, but its absoluete with the bigger gear - now its just habit.

keep on mind any reels with backing on them can't be used in "igfa rules" tournaments.
