I'm not a newbe to PCS . I am new to dsl . I just subscribed to Verizon's DSL service . the low end connection plan .. up to 1 Mbs I Have run several speedtests . They show my download speed between 700 & 950 Kbs . Web sites come up pretty fast and I am able to see streaming media just fine . When I download files I seldom get a "transfer rate " of more than 120 kbs . I have had dial up for years so I dont have much to compare this to . Is the 120 Kbs download rate about all I can expect with this plan , or could I improve on this rate by getting a better router/modem , or tweaking my current modem/router settings ? Not looking for a detailed answer , just would like to know if I am in the ballpark at 120kbs. Thanks .

Just for the record I have installed a dedicated line just for this connection . I am using the Verizon supplied Westell 7500 modem/router

The speed of your line is KbPS (Kilo Bits per second).
When the browser displays your download speed, it's KBPS (Kilo bytes per second).

1 kilobyte is roughly 8-10 kilobits depending on how it goes over the line, so what your browser displays is 1000/8, so that's about right...

i repair dsl svc for vz.. 1meg svc is actually on my test set set for around 1.140 down and 448 up.. depending on line condition and other factors..

they say for records sake you should expect 1meg down and 384k up..

if you want to get the line conditioned properly, and you did not hear this from me.. unplug your dsl modem from the jack, call repair and have them send someone out.. they can do things , even minor things that will jump your speed up dramatically..

make sure they dispatch someone and be there when they are coming,, so they can verify the line inside and out..

you pay for the service, get the most out of it..

90 percent of the dsl troubles are due to inside wiring.
