View Full Version : how many rods do you carry with you?
The distance thread got me thinking - how many rods do you keep with you while fishing? No general purpose rod/reel for me! If you're golfing you have a different club for different situations, so on any given trip to the beach (bottom to top) I keep 2 - 7' ultralights with 8 lb braid, one 8' light with 10, one medium 9' Arra with 17 and a VS for night beach walking, one medium heavy 10' Arra with 20 to horse blues though seal infested water, and 2 heavy 11' Arra's with 17 (40 shocker) for bombing it out there. If I'm going to flip eels I bring a 9' lami GSB with 17 mono to boot. That gets me to seven, sometimes eight. What you got??
Back Beach 02-16-2009, 01:15 PM Easy access spots like the canal I usually have 2. One for each weight range I'm using.
Difficult access areas like XXXXXX_XXXXXX or long walks its one 10' spinning rod for me.
fishingaddict 02-16-2009, 01:19 PM you actually carry all those or you got a beach truck?
i carry 2 at a time the most. A 8 foot daiwa sealine with a penn 550ssg with 30lb braid for schoolies or light action fun with bigger fish and a 10 foot ande tournament surf with a penn 850ssm with 65 lb braid its my breachway beast.
The Dad Fisherman 02-16-2009, 01:23 PM One, unless I'm at the canal then I bring 2...one for jigging and one for plugging
truck. And I forgot - before sand eels became scarce I'd carry a 11' bait rod too, along with a sand eel rake to boot.
what BB said. i always have 2 rods on me, my 10ft super surf and a 9ft loomis 1084 as a back up. if i'm walking a long distance then i carry both. if i can get back to my vehicle fairly quickly then i'll leave the 9ft'er in there. either way im bringing an extra rod( and spool) because i'm not going to pay 20 bucks for gas and 20 for eels and then get to a spot just to have my only rod break...
slow eddie 02-16-2009, 02:15 PM one at a time, back up 2 piece in the trunk. one never knows
Rappin Mikey 02-16-2009, 02:32 PM Depends where I am at. Usually, unless I'm planning on kayaking, and or driving the beaches, 2. Otherwise, 5.
Nocturnal 1 02-16-2009, 02:50 PM 1 with a spare spool.
I fish so close to home if i need my back up it's 30 seconds away.
steve 02-16-2009, 03:15 PM Usually just one,9 or 10 fter. I leave nothing in the vehicle, particularly Van Staals.
snake slinger 02-16-2009, 03:21 PM 1 most of the spots i fish are a walk.
BassDawg 02-16-2009, 03:47 PM 2 ~~no matter how far the trek.
1 for eeeeeeeeeling and 1 for plugging the 3 dawns!!
just don't like being caught undergunned or ill-prepared.
MikeToole 02-16-2009, 04:03 PM Always have a back up in the truck but rarely carry more than one except when I'm bait fishing when I usually have two. Now if I'm driving the beach normally have six rods rigged and ready just in case.
Usually only bring what I am going to carry with me so one rod and my plug bag. Don’t really like leaving extra rods/plugs in my truck at night.
Pete F. 02-16-2009, 05:16 PM one, I can't imagine carrying two rods, where would I leave the other when I wade out on a rocky bar?
jimmy z 02-16-2009, 05:36 PM At night, one for eels and one for plugs. At daybreak, only one for pencils.:kewl:
afterhours 02-16-2009, 05:43 PM Usually just one,9 or 10 fter. I leave nothing in the vehicle, particularly Van Staals.
hear ya steve, used to have 4-5 in truck, but with recent rash of thefts over the last few years no way.
tattoobob 02-16-2009, 05:56 PM I usually take at least 2 but if I can't be close to my truck or carry it with me I only take 1
If I am driving the beaches 6 to 8
Rob Rockcrawler 02-16-2009, 06:36 PM If its the canal i bring 2. Anywhere else i bring one. And leave 1 or 2 more in the truck. gsb 1201L-4", or RS 1208 covers a lot of situations.
Redsoxticket 02-16-2009, 06:47 PM I only bring one rod however I do waste a good amount of time in deciding which rod to bring.
RickBomba 02-16-2009, 07:29 PM Usually four, one 8' Ron Arra for schoolies, a 9' Fenwick that's all around good mojo, 10' All Star for eels, and an 11' meat stick for heaving or kayaksting (this is at the Cape).
Around here, I use a 10' Conoflex Sorcerer for throwing chunks and the All Star for eels or plugs.
late-start 02-16-2009, 07:45 PM One
fishaholic18 02-16-2009, 07:57 PM 2...1 for snaggin' the other for live lining...:fishin:
MassBass 02-16-2009, 08:32 PM I can't imagine carrying more than 1 rod. My guess is that most of you with more than one rod either fish with a beach buggy or the canal with bikes? 1 rod for me. I fish on the move, lot's of walking and climbing.
Swimmer 02-16-2009, 08:53 PM It depends whether or not i am traveling in the "f$#@*$& fishing focus" or the ranger.
My brother's focus I can fit two rods easy. The 11'3" sticks right out the window. The tenfooter just inside.
In the ranger I can hide four inside on the underside of the roof, outside an infinite number, up to twleve. So that would be sixteen in all if I pushed it. You should see the friekin ranger when I drive onto the ferry in Woods Hole. More than one person has thought and said I must own a tackle shop.
I usually carry two along the @^$%* or down the beach.
BassDawg 02-16-2009, 09:25 PM one, I can't imagine carrying two rods, where would I leave the other when I wade out on a rocky bar?
most of my udl's have ample room for laying down the alternate rod
hear ya steve, used to have 4-5 in truck, but with recent rash of thefts over the last few years no way.
the second reason why i tote both my sticks to the surf,
they can't steal what's not there mi amigos!!!

Well, I don't know if I have the expertise to add anything to what 2na (Mike) has to say. But on the beach I bring at least 3 rods. 1) 10 foot conventional Lamiglas with an Abu Garcia 7000 C3 (or CL) with 20# mono (hate braid on conventional for bait) for casting bait (sand eels), 2) a 10 foot St. Croix spinning (up to 4 oz) with a Penn 750 with 30# braid for plugging when I need the distance and 3) an 8 foot St. Croix (up to 2.5 oz) with a Penn 460 Slammer with 30# braid when I want to walk the beach for a distance and want to conserve weight and energy.
So at least 3 on my truck at all times.
MarshCappa 02-16-2009, 10:25 PM 2 for me.
gone fishin 02-16-2009, 10:27 PM One for pluggin and up to 6 or 7 for backup - soaking bait - jigging or whatever. If I am hoofing it and away from the vehicle one is the limit excepting the ditch where two is a must. One rigged for tin/lead and one for plug.:walk:
ReelinRod 02-17-2009, 12:05 AM Wow, I'm going to sound like a freak or something.
If I'm going down alone I take at least 15 complete set-ups. I keep my options open from throwing 1/8oz leadheads for weakies from a backside bulkhead to 12ozs and a bunker noggin on the front beach . . . and everything in between.

No my friend, not a freak. Just OCD's. I got 'em too, but know I got 'em.:kewl:
Good job ReelinRod - I'd carry more but that's about the max for the roof rack. Sometimes I'll put the 7'ers on my bunk or front mount so I can cram more on top. I need a different rod for different situations big fish small fish close fish far fish bluefish.
bassackward 02-17-2009, 09:50 AM Usually 2 when hoofing the beach, 2-3 in the yak, and 2 - 4 when driving the beaches. Always have a spare 8 or 8 1/2 foot 2 piece and reel w/xtra spool under rear seat as a back up. Plus, a travel rod or two with reels under seat as well for fresh or schoolies. Now that I am starting to try conventionals as well, I may have more to bring in the future.
EarnedStripes44 02-17-2009, 09:59 AM 2....
Mr. Krinkle 02-17-2009, 10:08 AM When I'm jetty fishing i'll bring 2 rods. I use a 1321M w/ vs200 most of the time but I'll also bring either another 1321M or a 10' honey lami w/ vs250 for some yanking power. Back bays and open beach i'll bring 2 rods. Arra 1204 vs150 if there are small fish around and my 1321M w/vs200. When i'm on my boat I bring way too many rods.
fishbones 02-17-2009, 10:30 AM One rod goes with me for plugging. I like to travel light because I do a lot of walking. I also keep a 9' 2 piece and sometimes an 8' 2 piece in the trunk with a few extra reels and an extra plug bag.
Bronko 02-17-2009, 10:57 AM Easy access spots like the canal I usually have 2. One for each weight range I'm using.

Ditto.
saltfly 02-17-2009, 11:10 AM Riding the beach;9.3 spinners,3 conventionals,3 flyrods.Canal;2.1 plug spinner,1 conventional jigger.Beach walking calm nights;2.1 spinner and 1 flyrod[4pc. brkn dwn].beach walking windy nights.1 plugger.
eskimo 02-17-2009, 12:31 PM Only one with a spare spool.
fcap60 02-17-2009, 01:27 PM 85% -only 1 rod
15% - 2 rods, when I want to bring a fly rod or conventional and I can feel safe about where I leave it.
hear ya steve, used to have 4-5 in truck, but with recent rash of thefts over the last few years no way.
I hear that
I only carry one these days unless i am out east
Even then ,they never are on the truck ,allways inside
You cant leave anything outside these days
Justfishin' 02-17-2009, 02:54 PM I allways have at least two in the truck,( 1 spin, 1 conv) and a couple of fly rods behind the seat. When I'm walking or rock crawling just 1 with a spare spool, 2 if I'm staying put. When I'm driving the beaches-Rolling Tackle Shop!
ElSluggo 02-17-2009, 08:15 PM to me the more I carry the less I move and the less I catch. I have done the best with one and and extra spool. the question is which one?
BOSOX 02-17-2009, 09:59 PM I almost always have 2 on me just in case. On time I was out in the kayak in the middle of a school of bass and I got a nasty backlash, buck fever I guess. The spool was FUBAR, no chance of clearing it...that was the last time I brought one rod. 4-6 rods when I'm on the boat, just 1 7' spinning combo when the schoolies show up. Always 2 at the canal, it's definetely not worth the drive and walk to wad up a reel on the second cast
Rocco34520 02-17-2009, 10:39 PM 2 when im at the canal. One for plugging and one for jigging.
BOSOX 02-18-2009, 11:24 AM Just curious, does the "vs" stand for Van Staal??? If so, holy bejesus. How many ya got? Your on LI, so maybe they fell off the back of a truck. I'm jealous.
maddmatt 02-25-2009, 11:43 AM 4 plus xtra spools to feed the seals. i keep 3 out and rigged so when a seal busts you off in the 10 min blitz at dawn thers no down time...... until you bust off the 3rd seal. been sealed as many as 6 times in a morning. anyone ever try seal nuggets?
MAKAI 02-25-2009, 08:29 PM I just spool up a beer can with 60# pound blue mono, use a spark plug for a sinker, scrap some dried squid of the jetty, make sure my filthy wife beater tank top is too tight, my hair net is in place and the neck tats are looking slick. I bolo that spark plug around my head a few times and let fly, sit back and hang with the "new americans". Where's my free stuff it's been over a month now, c'mon.

Bring it!
Stewie 02-26-2009, 10:19 PM I carry one. I usually have a spare reel stashed somewhere"just in case"
Saltheart 02-27-2009, 02:48 AM Most of the time I have one rod for the intended job and one two piece all around rod in the truck just in case.
In the fall in south county I usually have several rods. One for nightime plugging and eeling. One for schoolie blitzes. One for fishing in the current off the breachways and one to launch stuff as far as I can such as big poppers for bass or heavy metal like a needle eel for Albies and bonita.
Saltheart 02-27-2009, 02:51 AM Oh yeah forgot to name then.
Schoolies Lami GSH 108 2mh
Eeling Loomis 1266
breachways XRA1205
rackot launchers I have two Allstar 1418 and a Century Tip Tornado light. the tip tornado will really send them if the lure is heavy enough. The allstar 1419 can do down to 3 well and 2 in a pinch but not well.
Just n time 02-27-2009, 09:11 AM One rod when fishing the surf, two if fishing the canal because, well it's the canal. 5 or more when on the boat. I like the one rod the best. I try to go stealth, as little gear as possible to pick up and move fast. I target about 6-8baits I'm going to use and that is it. I use a rubber shad and jigs alot. Go light and move quick, and for the love ofGOD please wear a PFD!!! I hope someone's wife is reading this and forces her zipperhead husband:whackin: to get a PFD!!!
