I been busy working on a few ideas I have been batting around for awhile and these are some pics of the finished product! The biggest idea I had was I wanted to add gill covers to some of my plugs mostly for aesthetic reasons. I like the results! It also gives the head more definition and gives me a convenient break point for some of my paint schemes!:kewl: Love to hear your thoughts!:kewl:

Also been working on a few new jointed versions of the "Prey" swimmer and my 3 oz. Danny! Have not had these in the water yet as they are prototypes but they will swim soon! I think the design will provide a tight wiggle with th water flowing into the joint! I like the result though!:uhuh: Fun to try to carry the paint over from front to back...gives a great result!

I have never been able to get the results I have been looking for in a mackeral pattern....I tried some free hand before but was unhappy with the results and could not find a pattern template I was happy with so I tried a new way to freehand and I was quite pleased with this result! These are blue macks Raven.....no green in them. Maybe your eyes see something I don't? I have seen green tinkers before....but no green in the adult Jacks??

Larry those are fantastic. I too tried freehand mackeral lines. Seemed to be OK . I think if I had a good airbrush for detail they would of came out better. what gun have you been using? I've been toying with a recessed joint for a tihgter fit and also making a 2 -piece jointed to take apart to fit in plug bag then join when fishing. Thinking of a Breakaway clip. Trying to find an easier way to carry 10" jointeds. On the positive side of a joint farther apart is that the plug would fold over an fit in the tube on one half and lay across the top of the tubes. You know it's winter . Too much time to think.

Larry those look great!

I was messing with jointed stuff this weekend trying to tighten the joints. I ended up countersinking the whole nose grommet on the back piece a little bit, so the whole nose grommet is countersunk maybe a little over 1/8-3/16. Once you do the tail wrap on the back piece all that sticks out of the nose loop is the very end of the loop. Where yours is cut in such a sharp 'V' you'd need to make the tail loop on the head piece sit horizontal then the countersunk nose loop on the back piece could be vertical ...

Those are incredible Larry, the joints look about as tight as you can get them. How the heck do you get the wrap in there so tight?

go4broke44
02-17-2009, 10:37 AM
Larry you should check out Jig Man's idea for tight joints, its on "the other site", might work out exactly how you want. Nice work though!

The gill plates are as simple as it gets......I made a jig for my bandsaw, positioned the angle I wanted them to be, choose where on the plug you want them exactly and just a quick cut on each side! Set your jig up so it positions itself identically on both sides! Then just a little sanding and Bob's your Uncle! I like a little realism on my plugs.....been batting this simple idea around for awhile now!:btu:

Technically the covers are not red....the plates inside are. However I had tried a few by adding some red and could not get the nice clean look I liked. Tried brushing by hand and with an air brush and was not happy. Figured by letting the various colors of each plug just "bleed" into the slits would look great.....and I liked it.

Beautiful work Larry. One question doing the joints that way in my experience the water pushing passed the plug fills the joint kind of kills the action, so I've done those v-joints in the opposite direction. I'm curious if with your plugs does the joint work in a more subdued fashion or are you still getting the traditional exaggerated action.

Bigfish Larry, Great to see these awesome plugs in person at plugfest. Did you have a jointed popper too? I think I saw it in your display case. How is the action?

Great seeing you Chum/Matt! I did a version of that jointed popper when I first started building as kind of a lark but fishing the canal as much as I did last season I started to think that if weighted heavy in the tail section to give it good heft in the current, it would work great in the ditch! So this season I will find out! I wanted it particularly for when I let the plug drift with the current so the joint gives the plug a little wiggle! I will let you know how it works! I am going to do some with the "V" joint I had on the swimmers!:btu:

Thanks Paul! That means alot coming from you!:btu:

Your plug display was simply amazing Larry, I found myself standing in front of it prbably atleast a dozen times(the rest of the time I could not get close enough to see it). I will admit that I was a little uncomfortable standing in a room full of guys having those kind of thoughts.

Thanks you very much for the canal special, I hope the mackerel are around this spring like they were last year because i am wanting to see this thing get smashed.

...if you need a guinee pig to help test those jointed poppers I'm there for you, just so you know.

Thanks again and keep up the good work.

I have to say I agree 100 percent with Paul on this one.
I also enjoy giving Larry a hard time...
It's so easy..
Larry's plugs have some of the cleanest lines I have seen. They are put together well with the top of the line components and they catch.
It is nice to see as Larry is a by product of this whole internet plug building scene..It just goes to show what you can do through hard work.Along with taking some pride in what it do..
Awesome job you big lug...
BTW this comment was not solicited with any free plugs.I did not get a BF Larry plug at plug fest but if he wants to send me some I could use a few more. These comments come from the stone cold heart of the NIB and they do not come frequently or easily..
