I just came back from the Middleboro town hall. I recieved herring permit number 205 at 11:30. The permits went on sale at 9:30am. They only issue 300 non resident permits. I estimate they will be sold out before 1:30pm.

actually, they're only selling 250 non-resident permits this year and they went on sale around 8:30 this morning...i got there at 8:30 and the line went from the town clerks window down the hall and out the door into the bank hallway...

i can only imagine what the three women working in the town clerks office thought about all the lunatics lining up to buy herring permits in january...:D

one of the women asked me what do we do with the herring, eat them??

i said no way, they were way too valuable for that...:p

I saw it mentioned at another site that only 250 were being offered but I confirmed with the clerks and they sad 300. Probabky doesn't matter by now.

Yea,

Some friends of mine were thinking of beating the system by going 3 ways on 1/8 of an acre in Middleboro and then claim residency. We figured this would be enough room for a camping trailer and 3 herring tanks as big as the lot would allow on it. Then we would be guaranteed live herring throughout the season.

:D

makes sense since it was 300 last year...i know that there was an article in the emtyprise that said 250, thats probably where the number came from...either that or they bumped it up due to the number of permits they sold today...

if this winter isn't too bad, those first little silver beauties should start showing in 8 weeks or so...

I hope the winter is bad this year (cold but no snow) because last year the herring came early and (more importantly) left too early.

Also, I just spooled 5 tip-ups last night and I'm itching for some ice fishing. :D
