View Full Version : LEDs???
nightfighter 02-24-2009, 07:55 AM Thinking about replacing my deck lighting with LEDs. Anyone done this? Any brand recommendations? Prices are all over the place so tough to judge what is good, what is crap. I saw this on another site. He used LED clusters from WestMarine, but I am wary of their products....
likwid 02-24-2009, 08:33 AM If you're gonna go LED, do the whole boat while you're at it.
Hella Marine is VERY nice but VERY expensive. Their running lights are the way to go.
Innovative Lightning makes nice stuff for courtesy and deck lighting.
buckman 02-24-2009, 09:54 AM We used LED strip lighting that they put under custom cars. cheap and lasted so far.
bobber 02-24-2009, 11:21 AM theres a guy making/marketing his own LED lights, including LED spreader lights which seem pretty friggin awesome.....and prices seem OK (not great, but OK)

Mr. Sandman 02-24-2009, 01:40 PM Those underwater colored LED's are the catsass. A buddy of mine has them and running at night is awesome...the entire wake is blue.

Whats next? A wing? Maybe lower the boat a little? 20" spinners? :lama:

Umm... offshore lights in the canyons....
ProfessorM 02-24-2009, 04:43 PM I did my whole deck under the sides. It is fantastic. Looks very similar to your picture but I used a light orange colored light. Very easy to do.
RIJIMMY 02-24-2009, 04:52 PM just curious how often folks use these deck lights? I use a headlamp most of the times as the deck lights destroy all my night vision.
ProfessorM 02-24-2009, 05:10 PM all the time, that is why I chose the redish colored light which points down on the floor so not really an issue, for me anyway. I also use a small flash light too as i am usually trolling lead core and have to see the amount of line I have let out.
MakoMike 02-24-2009, 05:11 PM I have to replace some spreader lights this year and I'm going to look into the LEDs
nightfighter 02-24-2009, 05:31 PM Went to the yard today, (since I have so much work.....) and asked the electronics guru what he liked for LEDs. Hella was his choice. I like the CoastalMarine site though too. He said the whites were the most expensive to produce, so the most expensive to buy. I like Paul's thought on using the red strings below the gunnel to reflect off the deck without killing your nightvision. The underwater blues would be nice, but in another economy.........
sportsman 02-25-2009, 07:32 PM Nightfighter, that pic is very cool!:hihi:
blaruffa 02-25-2009, 07:45 PM I replaced all my light bulbs with LED's replacement bulbs last year. Running Lights, Deck Lights, and spreader bar lights. LED's are awesome use almost no energy. For the cockpit/deck lights I went with blue LED bulbs, Running Lights Clear LED replacements, and for my spreader bar 9 LED replacement bulbs, they are as bright or brighter than the old bulbs.
I got mine from www dot superbrightleds dot com
blaruffa 02-25-2009, 07:47 PM I just ordered underwater LED's for this year, hope they'll be in soon. Good prices for surface mounts from Westmarine.

Golden rule of boats: drill as few holes as possible underwater. :fishslap:
RIROCKHOUND 02-26-2009, 10:08 AM Very true. Dealt with some old, poorly sealed holes on the r/v last winter...
thats why we're working on something a bit different for the lights...
likwid 02-26-2009, 04:33 PM grind out all the old.
fill completely with west + chopped glass filler.
redrill.
RIROCKHOUND 02-26-2009, 05:15 PM Already did. all that. West and glass filler is my best friend on that boat.

RIROCKHOUND 02-26-2009, 08:51 PM 85 Ro Marine. Hull is still a tank. needed some repairs on the helm station and transom.

The 33 series kits are real nice, I get them for about $10.00 a piece, there potted in epoxy and so far I havent had any failures yet.
nightfighter 02-27-2009, 10:31 PM Gary, How have you been using them?
Up under the gunnels, as idiot lights ect. I also use the super 443 series LED backup lights as engine room lights. And there used for nav lights on my 14' aluminum skiff.
