I have a 4 year old snowblower, bought at sears, and took the maintainance plan. The sales guy said if they can't fix it they will replace it. Long story short, starter went, and the alternator windings got chewed up by the starter teeth. They ordered the starter, and I finally got it 20 days after the initial service, seems they are having a hard time with the damn windings. They said it was delivered the 20th, I never received it. I have goten 4 different stories from they don't make the part anymore, to they have outsourced the part. Bottom line is if the can't fix it back to the way it was when I bought it they have to give me a new one. They just reordered it again, this is their last shot, then I want my new snowblower.

Through all the headaches, I hope you get the new blower. On consumer reporting websites, one thing that seems to be a consistent shortcoming from department stores is their "Maintenance Plan", "Extended Warranty", "Product Replacement Plan." Best Buy is the worst of them all. These companies use these as an additional source of revenue, not to provide the customer a source of protection.

Good Luck and I hope you get what they owe you, a shinny new snow blower!

Bill -

I had a VERY similar situation. My Sears riding mower had a defect with the deck. I enjoy taking things apart so I toyed with it. I removed the deck, made every possible adjustment and still had problems. Luckily I had the service plan.
The tech came out and smiled, "I know what it needs" ...and proceeded to do what I had already tried. I mentioned it to him, but I can understand that being his line of work, he went through the motions anyway. Didn't work.
He ordered some parts, 1 week later, parts show up....I toyed with the parts and realized they weren't going to solve the problem. I make the appointment with the tech, he shows up...I explain why I don't think they're going to work....soooo....he orders some different parts.....parts come, I check to see if they're going to fix it...NOPE!!!
Tech shows up again, I explain how I don't think this is going to work either.....he agrees and decides to call for support.

I call the Service line and explain what's happening. They thank me for my continued patience.....I ask them how long do I have to go without a lawn mower, and who is going to pay the landscaper bill that's been accumulating while my mower has been down. The representative informs me that as long as I gave the technician a chance (1), I can request a replacement.
Right there and then, I said "I WANT IT REPLACED"!!!
NO headaches at all....aside from waiting for one to be delivered. (Yes, I had them throw in the delivery as well) ;)

Bill, with it being snow season, I'd bitch about it and demand a replacement for customer satisfaction reasons. You've already given them ample time to get this repaired. It's now within your authority to request a replacement. Play the words in your favor, and they will not give you any grief.

Good Luck -

More Sears Bashing -
Guy at work got Craftsman snowblower last year, it had a problem this year, service guy arrived weeks late, and had the wrong part, again weeks later service guy is back. During time between visits Sears corporate was called to hear about the poor service, only to discover corporate customer service is a bad as all Sears service.
When the repair man finally had the right part, the guy at work here said "I'm not very happy with Sears customer service" ... now the best part, ..... service guy says "I'm not the happy dept."

as others said, screw the extended warranty

Just about every free riding lawnmower
on Craig's list

no matter where you look

is a Craftsman......

i wouldn't own a craftsman tool
even if it was free.

it should be named CRAPman

I brought a Sears table saw 20 years ago. In the box was parts of 2 table saws that had nothing to do with the one I purchased. Sear delivered the new one about 2 weeks later. I talked to the driver and he told me they have a saying at Sears. " Sears we spell quality with a K".. lol

This late in the season I'd tell them to refund your money. Then I'd be on the look out for a machine during the summer. If you can find one it will be marked down quite a bit.

I bought my honda lawnmower 4 years ago during the winter. It was half price.

Bought two chainsaws from Sears, the first was seized new in the box. Wouldn't pull over the first time I tried. They gave me an "upgrade" to replace it. It lasted 15 minutes cutting lilacs. I had bought their premix gas and bar oil figureing I couldn't wreck it that way. Third time I got a refund.

Now I had the opposite experience. i bought a sears riding mower for anbbout $1000 and kept it for almost 20 years. At about year 14 I put a new engine on it. It worked fine until the mag clutch started crapping out when it got warm. Anyway , I put a sign on it , for sale as is where is and a guy bought it for $250 , fixed the clutch and sold it for $400. I bet its still going today. I know that is unusual but I've alwats made out good at sears.

I almost never buy the extended warrantee. I did buy it on my LCD TV but that is the only thing i can ever remember buying it on. Extended warrantees are one of the few things you ever buy and hope you never get your moneys worth from. Life insurance is another! :)
