View Full Version : Feb & March Plugs by Blond Terror
blondterror 03-05-2009, 05:40 PM I have been making plugs for about a year but have been a woodworker and fisherman my entire life (53 yrs). I just mastered e-tex coating this Fall after I] made a rotating device to improve my curing stage. I used to only freshwater flyfish, then mostly SW flyfish but rarely caught an keepers on the fly so started plug fishing 4yrs ago. I still love to flyfish for trout in small NE streams and on the white river in VT for beefy rainbows.
Thus far I have only sold plugs at my church XMAS fundraiser.. raised $800 last Dec for charity (40 plugs @ $20 each)
I surfcast and kayak troll off Cape Ann, Barnstable harbor, RI Southern beaches,Block, Elizabeth Islands, and some LI beaches as well.

My burple sparkle version of a commercial modified darter
My catscratch handpainted round nose swimmer
My large slope head troller for kayak fishing in special waters off the cape
I wanted to attend plugfest but was XC skiing that weekend. the plugs looked!!
I have a General maxi lathe VS (a robust mini) and a sweet bowl lathe Vega 2600 for big salad bowls and lamps
Most of my plugs are made with AYC but I also use maple, cherry, and some mahogany as well... I have a lot of cutoffs in my bin pefect for plugs...
I want to thank you guys for all the valuble info I have obtained by lurking here for the past 2-3 years

Slipknot 03-05-2009, 05:52 PM Nice job Chris:kewl:
that chicken scratch looks real good, I've never done that color and you've peaked my interest to try it now.
That is a different bottle/darter.
Good luck with them.
blondterror 03-05-2009, 05:58 PM That bottle/darter is a clone of a "North Bar" lure that I have seen at a couple tackle shops in RI.
The cat scratch is a old design that has been around a long time and my brother in law only uses bombers with that color pattern off the cape with very good results..
i need to get better at making more uniform dots but the randomness is kind of cool... I use a paper clip end...
Thanks
numbskull 03-05-2009, 07:11 PM Welcome.....looks like you are in the right place. Beautiful plugs, one helluva fish in your avatar, and thanks for the breath of fresh air......:tm:
Moses 03-05-2009, 07:14 PM Welcome aboard Chris - Now give me one of those plugs!!!
blondterror 03-05-2009, 07:50 PM That fish was actually caught off Block island jigging with an umbrella jig with a pork rind teaser... yes .. it was cheating... I have a good work friend whose dad is John parente out of galilee and we go out at least once each year. His tracking GPS has all the great spots around block he has a bertram 34 and is a wonderful guy to fish with but he only uses jigging and will not let you fish with plugs since he does not want tangles.. veryone has to fish the same way...
Raven 03-06-2009, 05:45 AM Nice Plug's
How have you done trolling behind the Kayak....?
got any Bowl Pics?
blondterror 03-06-2009, 07:52 AM Raven- dangerous question asking me about bowl pics... I have been addicted to bowl turning for the past 5-6 years and my current addiction to plugs has given me a brief rest on the bowl front..
here are a few bowl pics with one segmented bowl which I have only tried a few times but is a lot of fun...
chris
blondterror 03-06-2009, 08:10 AM Raven... I am about 50/50 surfcasting vs trolling behind my Pungo
When I troll my go to methods are sluggos or Tube n'worm
here is a pic of some blues caught trolling last fall up off Manchester(MA) on my kayak bow... I have a rod holder in front and 2 behind my seat... I have been thinking about a SOT for some time and may get a used one this spring
I also troll with BIG 9" troller slopeheads in yellow or white and 9" black weighted needles
ProfessorM 03-06-2009, 12:24 PM Really nice plugs. I will look for you in B-Harbor as I pretty much live out there all summer.
blondterror 03-06-2009, 06:11 PM Professor-
I really like B'harbor fishing... some days the water color looks like the carribean and there is soo much area to explore with a kayak- the rip at the point can get crazy on busy boating days... it is fun to wade fish the drops offs esp at 1st light with a falling tide
I look forward to meeting you OTW and catching some fish together
chris
ProfessorM 03-06-2009, 07:42 PM funny I say that all the time. The Caribbean has nutin over this body of water. I agree if you can get out during the week it is a whole different place.
