Looking to do some cod fishing this month early April.
Anybody been aware of what boats are doing well?

Huck has always been my first choice. Anybody else thinking about going out?

Bill

I went with the Frances Fleet on Monday--sucked even worse than Sunday. Still nice to get out on the water though....
I'm on vacation right now and could go out again either this week or next. I called around and most of the boats do not seem to be running until April 1.

Are there any charters that would take a group of us out if we organized it in the next couple weeks?

The cod season north of Cape Cod is closed until April 1st, so If you want to go codfishing the Francis Fleet or the Helen H are your only choices.

It is not closed...it is just that you are restricted to 75lbs per boat, 2 fish per angler above the 42nd parallel until 4/1...makes it not worth going.

if they let you use braid you'd get away with 1/2 the weight and catch twice the fish

before they "banned" it on headboats i used it a few times. i figure i have intermediate headboat skills and i destroyed the regulars out catching them 2 or 3 to 1.

much more feel at 300 or 400 ft of water. especiallt when fishing bait for haddock.

Mansfield definitely has some boys on the site.

Nothing wrong with a little local intel.

i've never been on a party boat that gave me a hard time about braid. just put on a 20' topshot of mono for the inevitable tangles and you are good to go

I am taking Travis' site on the HelenH.
Given that it is a charter, we's going to be using da braid.

Definitely go with braid...I tied in a 30' top shot of 80lb mono with a slim-beauty so you can grab the heavy mono in lieu of the braid when grabbing the line and dragging the fish in over the side...it will save your hands and hopefully any tangles...

Yea, bring a shark (wire) leader in case they let you target one, not likely, but they will got after your cod for sure...they lucked out and pretty much "teased" them to their fate...

The Jones Brothers is my old mans rig...I help myself to it every weekend as all his charters are on the weekdays:kewl:

...and it is customary to show up at Steve's without any beers and drink all of his.:buds:

Better check again, the possession of cod in federal waters north of Cape cod is prohibited between November 30 and March 31st. Maybe what you cited is MA regs?

Yes they are MA regs...so offshore is a no-no, good to know. The 21' CC doesn't usually make it off shore between 11/30 & 3/31.

mad...i was fishing w/ 30 lb braid.. everyone on the boat had braid .....i still needed a 21oz to 26 oz jig to hit the bottom ,the current was ripping and with the 10 to 20 mph winds pushing the boat. i had 10 to 30 sec bumping the bottom. also i was tossing the jig 50 ft up tide :as:..its not my first time cod fishing

I drove by Buckman's house at about 515pm. There were like 6 pickup trucks in the driveway.
Must have been a meeting of the John Birch Society or something.
One of the damn things was sticking out into the street. traffic was backed up either way because only one lane could get by at a time
