Be sure to update your Windows and your anti-virus to the latest version - http://www.microsoft.com/protect/computer/viruses/worms/conficker.mspx

Crafty Angler 03-31-2009, 12:29 AM Thanks for the reminder, John - I already installed the latest version of my AVG which is set for daily scans and made sure I had the MS08-067 patch -
I'm set for automatic updates from MS but checked anyway and had a small patch to download -
The Mrs also got an email at work today from their geeks about a "ransom-ware" virus called Vundo that encrypts jpegs, PDF's and Word docs - and then the pranksters sell you a product for $40 to decrypt your files again -
Goddammed kids today...:smokin:
So anyway, whaddya think, Cap - is there gonna be a denial-of-service attack for April Fools Day or not....
And would shutting off your computer on the 1st be effective - or would the worm just do it's dirty work once you power up again anyway?
Concerned geezers want to know...:hihi:
RickBomba 03-31-2009, 04:52 AM It's most likely already there, Crafty!
More like ET phoning home...
Raven 03-31-2009, 05:14 AM Crafty is infected...? :(
I hope your Spleen feels better soon ya old Geezer :spin:
in all seriousness... in as much as i don't think script kiddies
should be thrown in jail with VIOLENT criminals......
on the other hand........
I also don't believe the penalties for creating viruses
are strong enough.... and should be totally re written :lasso:

Hey, I don't have worms, porcupines...:fishslap:
Bernzy 03-31-2009, 09:57 AM This virus is truly most evil. It recently attacked my PC like a machine gun. Avast AV could not keep up with it. I could not load AV updates or any MS fixes. I was being controlled from a remote host and had my AOL passwords compromised. I had to start fresh with a new computer :realmad:
MS has put a $250K bounty out for the originators.
I hope they catch them &:hang: them :fury:

striperman36 03-31-2009, 10:01 AM Update all your windows machine, if you cannot get to the msupdate site you got it.
My printer had it also, as it was windows based, that was fun.
Bocephus 03-31-2009, 11:59 AM Its about once a year that these things come out, that is, something that is SUPPOSED to be big virus. And sometimes it does happen. Id like to see it happen, seeing that Im a tech who's job has gone to India and will be out of work in a matter of months.
MarshCappa 03-31-2009, 02:23 PM Thanks for the heads up. I just made sure all my updates were current. Another reason i love this site so much. Thanks John!:btu:

Don't be fooled my friend, this thing is extremely heinous:cens: I've never seen anything like it.
If this thing gets in to your computer, get ready to buy a new one.
You can't get rid of it.
I'm not trying to be a harbinger of doom, but this thing is bad, bad, bad.
I've dealt with crap like this over the years, but believe me when I tell you, this is some NASTY stuff.

reebok 03-31-2009, 06:00 PM Thanks for the heads up John. I just loaded a bunch of updates. I guess I was a bit behind. Of course I have Russian anti-virus software, so I feel pretty good about that part. :)
RickBomba 03-31-2009, 06:19 PM Zeees is how we feeeex the Russian space station!

This one is the most malicious virus I have seen once its on a machine, you have to reimage to get it off.
If you can get to windowsupdate.com from the machine in IE it is not infected.
bloocrab 04-01-2009, 06:24 AM Does anyone know HOW it's getting in?? What form/name/file type/etc/yada,,,yada,,,yada....
striperman36 04-01-2009, 06:49 AM it infects a site, you hit the site it gets downloaded,
its in quicktime and other trojans.
once its on a network it starts to spread from machine to machine
Raven 04-01-2009, 07:01 AM Does anyone know HOW it's getting in?? What form/name/file type/etc/yada,,,yada,,,yada....
i heard recently.......this morning
it's supposed to be hidden in a small graphic... the down-loader
also i heard that if you can go to your anti virus software site
and download the latest update for virus signatures then you don't have
the worm
as it's supposed to be able to block those sites.
:point: and all microsoft sites
microsoft has a 250,000.00 dollar reward for information
leading to the conviction of the worm author

Conficker Worm Strike Reports Start Rolling In
Reports are trickling in about the impact from the Conficker worm, as infected systems passed zero hour at midnight and began downloading additional malicious components.
Here's a quick roundup of some of the more notable incidents caused by Conficker so far, according to published reports:
- A nuclear missile installation near Elmendorf Air force Base outside of Anchorage, Alaska briefly went on a full-scale military alert after technicians manning the bunker suspected that several of their control systems were infected with Conficker.
According to wire reports, the remote facility temporarily moved to Defense Condition (Defcon) 3 in the pre-dawn hours, but quickly backed down from that posture. An airman at the installation who asked not to be identified blamed the mishap on "way too much caffeine" consumed by occupants inside the secluded underground control room. The airman said the facility's lead engineer became agitated and inconsolable after watching an Internet broadcast of Sunday night's hard-hitting 60 Minutes expose' on the Conficker worm entitled, "The Internet is Infected (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/03/27/60minutes/main4897053.shtml)."
- In Iceland, Conficker brought a brief thaw to the long economic winter that began last year with the government's inexorable slide into bankruptcy. According to local news reports, shortly after midnight local time, an ATM in the capital city of Reykjavik began spewing 100-Krona notes. Banking officials there reportedly said the Microsoft Windows-based based bank system began disbursing the bills after a local prankster crammed an infected USB stick into the maw of the teller machine.
- Londoners woke up to find the iconic clock tower Big Ben stopped at precisely one minute till midnight. The British tabloids blared that the giant timepiece had been felled by the Conficker worm. But security officials reasoned that the beloved landmark -- legendary for its reliability -- would have stopped exactly one minute later had the expected 12:00 a.m. updates to Conficker actually been the culprit. Several members of Parliament are now calling for a full investigation into the incident.
- In Waukesha, Wis., Leroy "Mac" MacElrie, 64, turned himself in to local police, claiming he was the author of the original Conficker worm, and that all of the subsequent versions were mere copycats. According to charging documents, MacElrie said he wrote the worm to get back at Microsoft founder Bill Gates for "not stopping spam by 2008 like he said he would." The man was released on his own recognizance, but several hours later a local television station captured footage (http://tinurl.us/86044d) of the man standing on a nearby street corner repeatedly shouting "I'm the conficker!"
Read on after the jump for more Conficker madness.
In case you haven't guessed it yet, APRIL FOOLS!!! Seriously, if we get any real news about outages, deaths, or disruptions actually caused by Conficker today, you will read it here first.

oops! missed that sentence sorry S-36
~
i think a reward similar to whats being offered for taliban senoir
officials in the millions should be offered by the government
for the capture of the person who made this computer virus
because they are no less a terrorist than they are imho.

I have had infected machines hooked up to a network tracer and somehow this damn thing actually traps the http requests out to specific sites. This thing is dangerous. we took alot of our labs off the network to keep them Isolated once we found an intrusion.
The Iceman 6 04-01-2009, 12:45 PM Zeees is how we feeeex the Russian space station!
We're in segment 202, lateral grid 9, site 15H32 - give or take a few yards. Captain American here blew the landing by 26 miles!
JohnnyD 04-01-2009, 12:49 PM It is interesting that nothing has materialized yet. Still a lot of hours left in the day though.
Rocco34520 04-01-2009, 01:56 PM Thanks for the heads up John! Will do.
