View Full Version : Anyone still using loran ? Raider Ronnie 04-05-2009, 01:18 PM http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2009/03/11/10694/?nc=1 They have been saying this for years. RIROCKHOUND 04-05-2009, 02:03 PM Offshore it is still very useful to transmit general areas (i.e. the 500 square etc..) spence 04-05-2009, 03:05 PM Offshore it is still very useful to transmit general areas (i.e. the 500 square etc..) Yep, I agree. -spence MakoMike 04-06-2009, 07:21 AM I still use it all the time. I hope that Obama changes his mind and continues the funding. As it is right now his budget will shut it down in 2010. Bas news to have the whole country dependent on one navigation system. Roger 04-06-2009, 08:08 AM I can't understand why Loran has continued as long as it has - waste of money IMO. Shut down one or two stations and the system is blind for the region covered. Clouds? Fog? and they system tells you that you're somewhere else. GPS OTOH uses 24 sats, of which your receiver needs to see only 2 to 3. Relatively speaking, problems are rare. I've still got lots of TDs that I need to convert to GPS, and I know time is short. That alone is not a good reason IMO to spend millions of tax dollars on inferior technology. SAUERKRAUT 04-06-2009, 09:35 PM Still using Loran: I have a flush mounted Northstar 800X into the consule. If I take it out, I'll have a big ugly hole there. I use it all the time. It has waypoints in it routing me safely around the Vineyard, either via Muskeget Channel to the east or around Gay Head to the west to the offshore grounds and structures. Still valuable. thefishingfreak 04-08-2009, 05:59 PM Clouds? Fog? and they system tells you that you're somewhere else. How would clouds affect a land based radio signal? afterhours 04-08-2009, 06:09 PM i relied on loran in all conditions for 15 yrs- was freekin' spot on and it's repeatability was amazing.
