View Full Version : Cannon Fodder
numbskull 04-07-2009, 12:30 PM Finally finished something.
Small pencils. Based on Gibbs 6" 1 3/4oz. The left sided ones are standard. The right side ones are goosed to 2.9oz (lead both sides of the belly hook) to compete with Flap and his shiitty loaded tiny Cordells.
numbskull 04-07-2009, 12:36 PM Next some 7.5" Gibbs 2 3/4 oz clones (my favorite pencil). Top are under-weighted to 2.2 oz and float at an angle (because someone told me they had done well on something like it), the blue is also goosed to 3.9oz for the canal (in case I'm dragged there kicking and screaming), the bottom ones are standard 2.75 oz.
BigFish 04-07-2009, 12:36 PM Cordells are gay!:jester: Nice pencils George....hope you kick Flap's ass!
numbskull 04-07-2009, 12:44 PM Then a single skinny pencil 7.5" 1.6 oz. It was born when I was adjusting the duplicator, but I liked it a lot. I set it up with a single 15gram tail weight positioned about 1/2 way between the tail and belly hook. It floats at 45 degrees and I think will work well real slow.....in case I'm dragged kicking and screaming to BH. :eek5:
numbskull 04-07-2009, 12:50 PM ....and some "dinner plugs". Copies of that beat up plug I posted earlier this winter........an attempt at a Jigman spook before I had a real one that worked well for a friend. Approximately 6.5" and 2.5 oz. They have a medium belly weight and medium tail weight to float at about 30 degrees.
numbskull 04-07-2009, 12:53 PM Finally, a Lucky 13 on steriods. About 6", 3 oz, fat, floats tail under and water at mid face, required a huge tail slug and massive chin slug. Haven't swum it yet (too lazy....but maybe today).

First....What no Mackerel? Secondly and most importantly, no matter how well those plugs are made a dwarf like you is physically incapable of casting as far as required to fish the canal properly.
Even your dog was embarrased by your casting last year. Better stick to casting into the dark, what you can't see won't upset you.:soon:
go4broke44 04-07-2009, 01:58 PM those tiny heavy ones will sink, won't they? (I guess the current will keep em up though).
Nice job, nonetheless.
numbskull 04-07-2009, 02:05 PM Since there is more weight in the tail than head, they sink tail down like a needle so when you start your retrieve they plane back to the surface. From what I've seen in the canal, reaching the fish and keeping the plug gently working on top is all it takes to get a hit.....these hopefully will accomplish that. Anywhere else I think they would be useless.
ProfessorM 04-07-2009, 02:38 PM All look great G. I hope to see you kicking and screaming in BH this spring
The Dad Fisherman 04-07-2009, 03:55 PM Those are sweet......weighted a few extra heavy for the canal too this year. Just gotta get my butt in gear and finish them
nightfighter 04-07-2009, 04:01 PM to compete with Flap and his shiitty loaded tiny Cordells.
LMAO...
Like them all, but love the spooks.
Mr. Sandman 04-07-2009, 04:44 PM You are a machine.
BILLC 04-07-2009, 05:30 PM You've been busy! Love them all, but I do have a favorite.:hee:
Would like to hear how your Lucky swims. Ones that I put weight forward had a slow lazy swim to them, which is nice.:kewl:
Tagger 04-07-2009, 06:43 PM Like em all .... those little heavys are bullets ,, they won't wobble on the cast I bet ..
Slipknot 04-07-2009, 07:12 PM They all look great George, I bet you will be able to launch them just fine, no cannon needed.

Looks similar to a KarlF and I use his there also. maybe the professor and I will see you out there again sometime when there are actually fish present.

If I'm at the canal you can be safe in assuming the fish are not, Slip.
Bill C, I can't say my L13 was a rousing success. Chugs well and swims the first few feet, but then deadens out and acts like a lousy bottle plug. Casts like a sinker, however, and sometimes what the fish like isn't what I expect. We'll see.
BILLC 04-07-2009, 09:13 PM Sounds like you will have to do a stop and go retrieve. I get life out of mine by not putting weight in the front half of the plug. The first one I made, I put the belly weight just in back of the front hook. I am thinking the light front tries to go left then right and the weight in the rear brings it back.
If you get ambitious, drill the front weight out and see if you get a different beast.:tooth:
stripercrazy 04-07-2009, 09:18 PM nice plugs and colors:D
islander 04-08-2009, 05:23 AM Nice stuff as always, you been burning the mid night oil.
Rockfish9 04-08-2009, 06:09 AM From one dwraf to another.. those look great... must be why I fish from a boat... not everyone has a built in 3' height advantage in every cast! Hi flap:grins:

He can cast a real long ways, but usually needs somebody to point him in the right direction.
jeffthechef 04-08-2009, 06:36 AM fine craftamanship, beautiful work! what size is a "dwarf" considered to be in the fishing world, under 6 feet?
ProfessorM 04-08-2009, 01:58 PM From one dwraf to another.. those look great... must be why I fish from a boat...height advantage
that's my reason. Don't underestimate the little guy.
Inside every small man there is a tall man doubled over in pain
pbadad 04-08-2009, 07:56 PM George you been a busy man. nice work. It's always sweet to tweak the weight of a known design and make it fill the niche in the arsenal.
