Good day,

I have a 17 ft Whaler and was wondering if it was too small to fish cod since they are so far out there. I usually launch out of the Weymouth dock and thought it would be too far and dangerous to travel on a small boat. I read so many threads of how folks are catching cod this time of the year but I assume they are fishing from large boats.

Your thoughts

Thx

I'd say if you have to ask if it's too small then it is too small. I don't do any cod fishing but I have to imagine there may be some closer spots you could try. There's got to be some deep holes or ledges you could hit that hold ground fish this time of year.

i make the run out to the bank in my 19 cc on a regular basis. my rig is a glorified bay boat, gunnels aren't very high. i just watch the weather like a hawk and at the first sign it getting nasty i hightail it out of there. i'm usually the little boat out there but sometimes see smaller boats on fac days. maybe take a few runs out to the b buoy and see how it goes. remember - if you have to ask yourself if it's a good idea, it's usually not. good luck

I used to go out of scituate harbor and get them a few miles out but that was a few years ago . I have a 17 foot whaler and go out pretty far you just have to pick youre days ,waves 1ft or less .and wind under 10 kts

You definitely don't need to go all the way to the bank to catch cod...especially early in the season. I'm not familiar with the waters south of Boston, but up around the northshore, there are plenty of places to codfish just a few miles offshore.

I'm sure there are plenty of holes and wrecks that hold fish within easy reach for a 17 footer...but like the others have said, pick your days and keep a constant eye on the weather conditions.

Pick your days and you can do it, when I was younger and dumber I used to cod fish from my 13' whaler skiff. I found a bunch of places within a mile or two that produced decent fish, not as good as the bank, but decent.

GregK, there are plenty of places to try for Cod, in and outside the harbor, pick your weather days like they other guys said and you can go anywhere. Just keep your witts about ya and only go where you are comfortable. If you want some spots to try, shoot me a PM and I will give you some anytime.
