How many of you guys throw your eels in individual ziplock bags and hook the eel while in the bag then pull it out through the hole??? I heard a couple guys using this method but have never tried. I would think it would be tough to hold the eel still in the bag? Thinking about going to it this year. Any thoughts?

Unless you wading really deep or wetsuiting, just get a soft sided cooler .

I do it. Sometimes hooking them is a little difficult but it works. It's only worth it if you will be deep wading or swimming.

Im wetsuiting 50% of the time, that why Im thinking the ziplocks might be a good change.

It sounds like a lot of work,to put an eel in a zipp-lock bag over several minutes it will die,also to take the time to put one eel at a time and then put another half dozen eels in each zipp-locks bag will take alot of bags and time.
I think there are a bunch of effective ways to carry/use eels,most wet suit Guys put them in a sack bag and carry them on there waist and others put them in a small soft sided cooler with ice packs or crushed Ice,I use the soft sideded cooler method by the time I goto use them there pretty much chilled down and handleing them with a rag works pretty good,but this works for me.

They will probably suffocate in the bags.

I use an old money bag.Shotgun shell bag.Put em in the bag cinch it closed tuck the bag under my wading belt.Put a small blue ice block in it inside a ziplock bag inside it.I just use a rag to get them out and hooked.The whole ziplock bag for each eel sounds like a pain to me.We don't need any more slimy plastic bags on the shore or in the rocks.I'd say bad idea.

I just got a soft cooler to carry with me while fishing... hate backtracking to the bucket.. any of you encounter any problems such as eels suffocating or getting too covered in slime? I wouldnt think they would suffocate, since you'd be opening it at least every hour... even when zipped tight... I'll probably wear it on a belt behind me...

My partner in crime JP does this; they live fine for hours, just blow some extra air into the bag...

why not use riggies, bro?

Yup...:kewl: Works pretty well & keeps the icky gooey stuff off your hands and waders/jacket...:hihi:

Just make sure there's air in the bag - they live fine.

The only downside is that sometimes you get a poor hookset & premature cast-off due to the visibility in the bag if you rush hooking the eel...

Im not a big fan of the AS bag. Using the soft cooler but a little awkward when swimming, just figuring like 4 live ones in ziplocks in the front of my plug bag would be perfect. Figured Ill give it a whirl.

Rudy's Rigs are a different story. Those will be getting some play in the bag definitley.

Why complicate things by using plastic bags? You have to worry about the multiple plastic bags, litter, etc.

Pickle bucket with scuba belt...drill a bunch of holes in the bottom of pickle bucket and throw a couple handfuls of ice on them before setting out...if you're wetsuiting or deep wading, simply drill more and bigger holes in the bucket so it doesn't float.

I wouldn't worry who from where is doing what, its about what works for you.
I go with a 3 can soft sided or pickle jar for wetsuiting. Toby L rigs a nice one.

Deep wading, the only problem with the cooler is if the surf is big, the strap breaks and bye bye eels...
ask how I know :wall:

It works very well and is widely considered a viable method for handling eels when deep wading - after that it is a personal decision.
