Finished up making a feeder that will hold fruit and grubs and I got oranges all over the place this morning. A little overkill to try to bring in some new species. I know the fish are here - that's tonight's work.

So I have few minutes right now and I sit at my desk to check out what's coming in. For the first time I spot a Rose Breasted Grosbeak, male and female. I'm pumped. They take off and there are these black chested birds I'm trying like hell to ID. So one of these is at the feeder next to a Red-Winged Black bird. I got the binocs on the bird and the next thing you know there is a flash and the lens goes dark. I pull back and there is a hawk standing on top of one of the birds in the yard. I'm stunned. Every now and then it would stamp it's claws on top of it's prey. I'm just watching it through the lens in awe. I pull back and go to grab the camera because it was that close, but it takes off. It had the Red-Wing. Took off like it was nothing. I think it was the Sharp Shinned that visited over the winter. The feeder is pretty quiet right now :err:

Ouch, i know they have to eat too but better it was the red wing rather than
one of the Grossbeaks.

Does stay real quiet after a hawk attack.

We have a hawk that visits our feeder all winter. Sometimes all we see is a flash and a puff of feathers.
We have a big evergreen about 30 feet from the feeder, the hawk shows up and all the sparrows ditch into the evergreen and that hawk goes right in after them! You gotta see the bush rock back and forth! We have seen this 3 times now.The hawk has never left the bush without dinner!

it's past baby rabbit season so they switch over to birds.

i create thickets out of cut brush most people would burn
so that the birds have refuge (options) to get away from
the Hawks..

don't forget the suet... christmas tree shops have 3 for $2.00
