I have a a 2003, 3 cyl 75 hp Merc outboard, at idel I heard a squealing sound (not very loud) like that of a car belt in need of replacement. The water pump is working fine and the boat has no ill effects running full out.
Any idea?

I have only experienced that type of low annoying squealing noise when my wife is aboard.

I know the 150 mercs indeed do have a belt to drive the alternator
my 115 merc has been squeaking for years

I've looked it up on a few mercury trouble shooting sites, and it sounds like it may be the drive shaft bushing. they say it does happen on newer motros and not a big problem. It usually makes the squeel only at certain rpms then goes away. COuld be a minor misalignment somewhere, but they say it will more than likely go away as you drive it.

Thanks guys,
It did go away. Hit B-Harbor for some flounder and did pretty well.
My daughter caught 5 keepers and 3 small cod. No sound coming from the engine the whole day. The lube must have done the trick.
