View Full Version : enough rods??
Goose 01-20-2003, 10:26 AM When is enough enough? First of all I hate parting with my favorite oldies, yeah they're a little on the heavy side, don't know the make or model # (never cared either) all I know is they've helped me catch plenty. Sure rods are getting lighter and stronger more sensitive etc..etc.. but where do I draw the line. I often catch myself bring 2 some times 3 rods just in case.....and it ends up being a cluster, but then again they don't do chit hangin on the wall. anywaysssss. Funny, sometimes people come over and look at my rods and say HOLY _ _ _ _ ! and in my mind I say I need at least 4 more. But do I really? Here's alist of rods I gotta have.
#1 schoolie rod 7'..... rubber
#2 schoolie/ bonita rod 8'......swimmers anything light to 1oz
#3 schoolie rod 8'...... to 1-2oz
#4 bass/blue surf 9'....... to 1-3oz
#5 ee rod
#6 surf 10'....3-5oz
#7 chunkin
#8 jiggin
I must be doin something wrong :smash:cause I got more then that, never mind all the boat rods.
So whens enough enouh?
redcrbbr 01-20-2003, 10:54 AM tony..sounds very reasonable to me. then again you might want to have a few extras for your family.
Slipknot 01-20-2003, 11:30 AM then you have to have doubles of some so you have a choice of spin or conv. :D
Don't forget backup rods in case something happens.
Ain't this fishing thing fun?
Fishpart 01-20-2003, 11:47 AM You don't have too many rods till you have more rods than Slipknot has plugs...............
Goose 01-20-2003, 11:53 AM aaaaaah I'm startin to fel better already:D
TheSpecialist 01-20-2003, 12:22 PM I know what you mean Tony.
too funny!
I have non-fishing friends over the house an they spot the "rod corner" and flip out! "geez got enough??? what are you gonna do with all them?"
...granted a handful are hubbies and some are freshwater etc....
but to answer your question.....never enough!!!! (unless you have made this decision for YOURSELF that is.....but why would you do something like THAT for??!!!):D :D :D
Clammer 01-20-2003, 12:38 PM Goose ===SCHOOIE rods ???:humpty: :humpty: :humpty: :humpty: :humpty: :humpty: :humpty: :humpty: :humpty: :humpty: :humpty: :humpty:
hooked 01-20-2003, 01:13 PM Looks like you need some more rods for boats, freshwater and flycasting.
One way to justify this to the non-believers is to ask them how many clubs come in a golf bag?
You could probably play a round of 18 with just a 5 iron, but why would you.
Saltheart 01-20-2003, 02:25 PM You definitely need an 8 weight and a 10 weight fly rod! I also think something in the 12 to 13 foot range is neeeded for when you need serious distance. And evryone needs at least one boat rod for the once a year cod fish party boat trip!! :)
RickBomba 01-20-2003, 04:47 PM I don't know about you guys, but every time my brother and father come over to the house, the accuse me odf stealing all of their rods.
I often laugh, because both of them use my stuff that the "keep" at their respective houses. I think they are waiting for early onset Alzhiemer's to set in; just hoping that I'll say "Oh, Yeah, that one's yours"
Although, they always do return borrowed reels once they are clogged with sand and salt and siezed.
Dad even loans my reels out to his pals, he's a regular fishing library...I'm in the process of fixing a 750 ss that was overdue for like two years.
Anyhow, this is how I rationalize to the Mrs. every time she says "You have too many reels, do you use them all?"
:D
bud8fan 01-20-2003, 07:37 PM When I gave up FW tournament bass fishing(I had 12 rods and reels!) I thought I would be happy with a couple of saltwater setups! Well now I am in the process of building a XRA 1205(my first official try at a surf rod) and have a Rainshadow 1087 blank that looks at me when I go into the basement.
Then there are the ones I already fish:
Lamiglas 108 1L spinning
Lamiglas SMB 1083 M conventional
St. Croix SCIII 7' conventional
St. Croix 8'6" steelhead blank built spinning(my schoolie rod)
Shimano Tallus 6'6" conventional(for those party boat trips and three- waying eels from the boat)
Loomis GL3 784 conventional(my fluking rod)also the first rod I actually built myself.
Plus I want to get another SMB 1083 blank and build it in spinning form.
I have also decided that if the 108 1M I traded in for my 1L is still in the tackle shop in the spring I will buy it back!
The kicker is my rod rack on the Blazer is only a two rod setup!
I guess whoever goes with me is gonna hang his out the window?:D

bloocrab 01-21-2003, 12:44 PM I disagree....
I believe there's a limit.....
I'm just sure we'll never reach it!!! :laughs: :laughs:
...let me ask you this;
How do you feel about loaning a rod/reel combo to a non-fisher, especially when your not going with them??? (I think thats a thread all by itself..:smash: )
I, can't answer that, y'all may not like me after hearing my answer, not that you like me now..
Got Stripers 01-21-2003, 01:09 PM That's like asking can something be too much fun, can I be making too much money, can we ever catch too many fish, well I think we all know the answers to those questions:).
Goose 01-21-2003, 02:56 PM Depends on who and what combo Bloo........you, snoopie rod, maybe!!
So twenty five rods is the tip of the iceberg........cool:D
I think you hit the nail on the head Bob!
JohnR 01-21-2003, 03:08 PM I realized that I really don't have enough rods even though 3 of my rods do 90% of the work...
6' Graphite P.O.S (don't use)
7.5 St Croix spinner - schweet!
8' Loomis SU965 conventional
1088 Batson conventional
1089 Pac Bay Sabre conventional
XRA1205 Arra conventional
Under constuction
1088 AllStar conventional
1087 Batson spinner (wife rod :) )
