Woodchuck aka groundhog... I have 5 of those bastards living under my shed, DESTROYING the gardens in the neighborhood... they are really cute until you plant a garden...

He looked a bit agitated when I got up close. Is it normal for them to be out during the day just hanging on peoples porches.Do they get rabies ?

the darn buggers will take one bite out of everything in your veggie garden. Wouldn't be bad if they just ate one thing complete but they like to sample and move on. Find the burrow, hope for only 1 entrance, jam a hose down it and flood them out and wait at the entrance with a pellet gun and a shot to the noggin. Stinks killing anything but they are too destructive. A free ranging dog at home will usually keep them away too. Under a shed will be tough. Maybe a smoke bomb to drive them out. Day time is normal. I see them along the highway a lot eating stuff. On a porch is not normal.

it's definitely not normal !

it could have rabies or even distemper...

they normally hide from humans

it may be a squirrel the more I look at it. maybe a very small woodchuck, baby size.

Maybe its a dag gum muskrat. Sorry I luved this cartoon growing up. Can you tell I am sleep deprived fishing 4 early mornings in a row. I'm loopy.

I dunno what that thing is but it don't have the face of any woodchuck I ever seen. It's got a marsupial head....

Raven

and his tail is dark brown ...which is odd

he's like a beaver without the flaptail

muskrats tails are rat like...

The face when compared to other woodchuck pictures on google images doesn't match up.The black snout and a few other features had me on a wild goose chase.

marmota monax = woodchuck.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groundhog

As stated above - it is a juvenile. Older ones get white around their snout. They can wipe out a garden pretty quick.

.22 HP short should do it. ;) Very fatty meat and gamey. I rather eat beaver! :D Muskrats aren't bad either, but tree rats are tastier. Sewer brains ...... LOL. I got ya on that one, huh?! :P

even without rabies and distemper these things are usually pissy if you catch them off guard....and epically a mother with babies around...

Any mammal can get rabies. Most rabid animals I have seen just look like they have had way to much to drink. There was a wave of rabies on the cape a few years ago. was menaced by an otter that tested positive for the virus. Seen many many sick racoons.

This one taunted my wife for a couple weeks before I got him last year....then....ANOTHER ONE MOVED IN a few weeks later. I trapped both and let them go 10 miles away in a heavily wooded area. Both fell for fresh brocolli. I told my wife to get some fresh brocolli to bait the trap......she proceeded to buy 3 heads :fishslap: Check him out sitting on the deck....

Then I had to do this to my deck.....dug down a foot and angled the screening 90 degrees so they can't dig under.

both woodchuck and squirrel are correct. woodchucks belong to the group of rodents called "ground squirrels". chipmunks, prariedogs, marmots etc....

C'mon Ray, this is a family site..:laugha:

Besides, that thing is clearly a lemur. Hasn't anyone here seen Madagascar? Someone is obviously playing a prank.

That animal is clearly an animal that is ripped apart limb by limb by the Foosa.

ts a skinny little woodchuck. I got one that periodically sits up on my back door steps. It is true about how every day they take a few bites out of something different in the garden. I once grew melons and every night when they started to ripen I would lose on to just a few bites by the woodchuck. When all the melons were gone , he got a hankering for sweet corn. He would knock the whole stalk down to get a few nibblets off one ear. next day , a different stalk knocked down. I once hid outside and when he entered the garden I gave him one in the butt with a BB gun. He barely moved after one pop and just walked away after the second. Anyway , I just forget about him now but if I go out that door at night I turn the light on first and take a look. I'd hate to startle him by walking out 2 feet from him. Mine was a real fatty , not skinny like this one. Maybe as some have said , its just a baby and hasn't filled out yet
