The Battle of Midway was a major naval battle widely regarded as the most important of the Pacific Campaign (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Theater_of_Operations) of World War II (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II).[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Midway#cite_note-3)[5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Midway#cite_note-4)[6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Midway#cite_note-Midway_Decisive-5) It took place between 4-7 June, 1942, approximately one month after the Battle of the Coral Sea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Coral_Sea) and six months after Japan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empire_of_Japan)'s attack on Pearl Harbor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attack_on_Pearl_Harbor). The United States Navy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Navy) decisively defeated an Imperial Japanese Navy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_Japanese_Navy) (IJN) attack against Midway Atoll (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midway_Atoll), inflicting irreparable damage on the Japanese navy and seizing the strategic initiative.[7] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Midway#cite_note-U.S-6)

Thanks for reminding us about the war in the Pacific at the same time as Normandy.

The Naval War College has an event commemorating the Battle of Midway every year with some distinguished speakers and such. It's usually a nice presentation. Here is a link to last years event, and phone numbers if your interested in going. They provide gate access to the base and war college for the event.

I have the DVD It's nearly worn out now :) Great movie that blends hollywood sets and real war footage in a fairly convincing way...especially considering it was filmed in the 70's. Has some historical innacuracies but nothing horrible.

History Channel has a great special on Midway. Love watching this stuff. Not Midway, but Flags of Our Fathers was a great read.
