Got an older model Starcraft 14'9" (i say 15, Tittle says 15)

Fiberglass, the gelcoat inside and out has had it, i plan to have her all ReCoated/painted this spring... anyway

I took the mooring cover off today to get my battery, and other electronics out cause of the cold temps.

In the back of the boat in the corner there is about 1" of ice... i have the Bilge drain open but the water must of came in and froze before it all emptied out the drain.

It's very cold so obvioisly the ice is frozen to the boat and there is no breaking it with anything unless i want to go all the way thru the boat :eek5:

Under most cases, will this mess the boat up? what should i do?

I don't want to open the boat in march and see a crack where the ice was :(

please give me any tips for what i can do for the rest of the winter

The motor is Winterized by a prof. Marine Tech and is in my basement. so no worry there... just worrying about the hull!!! :smash:



While i'm on the subject: what is the Approximate cost for quality supplys to Re-Paint, Re-Gelcoat and Wax a Average size/Height 15' Fiberglass boat? i don't need to know the cost of Brushes or Spray Guns cause we already have all that........Just the Cost of Paint,Primer, ETC.

I did a BoatTrader.com search equal to my boat and came up w/ this (NO! its not mine.)

Keep in mind when estimateing Approximate cost that my boat looks Almost identical to the one below- same size........except mine isn't as old as a model as that one is, but still the same exact style (not same colors tho) Looks like that........

How much would it cost for paint/gelcoat and whatever to cover this boat?

1 Gallon of good Paint should cover that boat, right? 2 gallons just to be safe?

You will probably only need 1 quart of primer, 1 quart of paint. Use the roll and tip method with a 1 part poly paint.

Roll & Tip = one person uses a roller to spread the paint and another guy follows with a foam type brush, Right??

I heard that is the best way to do it without a spraygun.

1qt will cover that whole boat? bottom/topsides/deck...etc?
I like the colors on that boat...would like mine to match that!


Can anyone give me an APPOX estimate of 1qt. Primer 1qt White paint and 1qt (or smaller??) can of that bluepaint.

I desided not to reGelcoat it. as it seems to hard/expensive...

i got a few scars i want to fill in with Marine Tex or some kind of filler compond...anything.

about 2 1/2 months to go till boating season , i want to have everything soon so i can start saning and removing hardware off the boat. then flip it over on some crates...

I want everything done by april. :happy:

On an older boat....one of the best things to do (for looks and durability) is to have if alwgripped. (this is an epoxy paint). THe problem is that is really needs to be done by a professional to have it come out right. There are probelms if it is not thinned just right and it really needs to be in a spray booth IMO to obtain the perfect finish. It is great stuff when done right but costly. I just priced out doing my 8' dyer sailing dinghy and it was 1300 to have it sprayed with alwgrip.
The other option is to take to to a body shop and have it sprayed with imron. This is a little cheaper. Both are very dangerous to inhale. (you could die if you breath this stuff you need a resporator)
The cheap do-it-yourself option is to roll on another coat of gel coat. It does not look that good IMO but if you are careful and prep it right, you could get an acceptable finish. I would suggest when finished to sand lightly with super fine sandpaper and then compound and buff the hell out of it .You can get a decent finish.
BUT if you want that factory new look, the best is alwgrip. It will hide all the hairline cracks and look brand new when done.
Don't just roll on regular paint...it will look like crap and not stand up very well.
One last thought: You could try and spay the gelcoat in your backyard on a nice day. That will look decent. (Do it on a VERY *still* and *dry* day.) Gelcoat...you have about 20 mins of pot time. Gelcoat smells but it should not kill you if you inhale it. (use some common sense though)
Gelcoat is about 20 bucks a qrt. Not too bad when you compare to the alternatives.
Regular Paint is cheap but it is not the same as the 2 part epoxies which when cured is rock hard. Paint...drys, epoxy hardens.
get a couple estimates if you decide to have someone spray it. (check your local body shop, sometimes they do boats at a good price)!

SSX - don't throw a $3000 paint job on a $800 hull. Best thing you can do is to repair the small imperfections/cracks/whatever in the gel and with the rest do a serious wetsand and then compounding. You might get back 60-80% of your color and have done it for under $100-200 (for equipment) and some hours of work... Don't consider painting it your self. Like these guys have said and many others I've talked to, this stuf is no chit deadly

SSX - As for the ice, you don't normally need to worry unless it is in an area where it will cause damage as it expands as it freezes.
As for the paint, I would try what John says and wet sand a small area to see if the shine comes back.If you are bent on painting it, I would go with a 1 part Poly boat paint like Easypoxy or Brightsides.You could buy a gallon of primer and do the whole boat, a gallon of off-white for the hull and cockpit, a quart of color for the topsides. Do a good job cleaning and prepping.I would try to spray it if you can get your hands on a compresser/gun.Many years ago I even sprayed an old 14' Glaspar that I owned with a Wagner airless sprayer and it came out really nice once you got the pressure/tip/atomizer set up. If not, rolling/tipping looks good too.I think this would be the cheapest way to get a decent looking job that will hold up pretty well.

My Uncle will be doing most of the work. i'll just be there for handing over stuff. My uncle is pretty advanced in painting houses so i think he will know what to do. Problem is i don't see him often cause he lives almost in CT. and mostly see him on holidays only.

But I asked him to come down for a weekend or 2 and he agreed :D so i wont be doing it :rolleyes:

He knows about painting but not prices....



John, i realize that is the best way to go- but this hull was painted over by some idiot who owned it last. it looks like house paint, i peeled some of it off and the paint under it looks so much better, ALMOST looks like if i took all the crappy paint off it would be shiny again :D is there a way to peel that coat of paint off and see what the paint under looks like? and then clean all that...?

If it's done by a Pro...yeah 3 grand.
But in my backyard on a spring weekend it shouldn't be too bad.

There is an area i'd like to Re-glass, near the bow..i bought a fiberglass repair it so that should be that.....

Theres a few Hairline cracks in the chalky paint on top- i never seen the whole boat with out that "house paint" on it...it may look good?

I ALMOST definetly want to repaint it; Roll & tip is what i plan to do..

Alls im aking for is a Price Estmate for all the paint/primer to cover this boat.

How good at sandblasting are you?

Can i just use pait thinner or sand it off??

Rather not rent a sandblaster, How much are THEY to rent??

I looked this up but can't find what the total cost is, cause most estimates are on 25+ foot boats..

I heard you can use a certain type of special Car Paint (corvette probably) and paint the boat, and put a clear protectant over it. is this true? cheaper?
Is this OK for saltwater boats?

Do i need anti-fouling bottom paint ??

The boat wont spend more then 1 day in the water, maybe i might beach it on Patience Island to camp one night out of the sumer...once. i know botom paint is Bucks, so can i get away without it as long as the boat isn't in more then a whole day?

I plan to have the boat in the water cruising around by May....and ready by late April.

I honestly think the only choice you have is to sand and re-paint with regular maine paint.
In order for epoxy to stick you would have to remove the old paint. This could be a bigger job then you think. Quite frankly for the size and cost of the boat...just repaint. (or buy a new boat)
This is the problem with regular paint over fiberglass. It does not hold up that well. epoxy finishes are much harder but you have to have a super clean surface to apply it to.

No you do not need anti-foul bottom paint if you trailer. Only if left in the water for the season.

The special "car paint" you heard about is probably imron. Yes you can paint a boat with it and it looks great. It is an epoxy (and toxic) paint that has some flexibility and is tough. IMO it does not cover as well as alwgrip but it is great stuff. I did a car ('73 camaro in met. blue) and a boat (boston whaler) with imron in the early 90's. (I did not spray it myself, my friend had a autobody/paintshop and he did it in a spray booth.)

So i sand it down and smooth it out? i have a Elec. Power Sander so that shoud smooth it out if done right, rite? also have manual palm sander.

when this cold snap warms up a bit- i will go take off the cover and take the windsheild , Steering, Trottle box, Cleats , Lights, Bimini top frame, and all other hardware off.. My dad will be *stealing* a couple of big crates from work to flip the boat on.

then i'll leave it like that covered w/ a tarp. untill i get all the materials and figure out what to do..... then around March i'll start sanding it down, sound good?? this a good plan to save some time?

Gel-Coat is out of the question. Epoxy paint should do. I really don't care how long the "Shine" stays there. I can just buff/wax it, only a 15' boat Max 2 hour job..

It doesn't have to look brand new- Just better then it is now.

Is it okay to sand the hull down, Cover it and not put anything on it untill i get all the meterials? bad for the glass?

I don't recommend this as a do-it-yourselfer:
1) it is very toxic to inhale
2) you really need a spray booth.
3) it must be sprayed
4) A botched job would be a nightmare for fix.

Talk to a paintshop for $ details. (it aint cheap though...but get an estimate)

I think it is overkill for your boat...you will never get it back.

Fish don't seem to care what condition your boat is in. Just paint it with regular paint and put it in the water and go fishing. Boats are a pain in the butt when you start fixing them. It ALWAYS takes longer and ALWAYS costs more then you think it will to do a job...

Paint is the only thing this boat has against it.....it's a awsome boat and will be worth the money to paint it i'm not looking to sell it yet anyway.

I think i can get a few more years out of the old shell :D like i said, they built 'em tuff back then. the glass in this boat is thicker then any similar NEW 15' boat i have seen.....Built to last, that's why theres so many of them still.

I was told by the guy we got it from "under the water line the glass is around 1" thick...." that's good for a small boat. that's why it's heavy ;) i knocked on the bottom and it's definetly thick, and strong. i felt 20' bayliners that werent as solid (But of course any boat is stronger/thicker then a bayliner, :D )

So i'm going to keep this yacht of mine and fix it up to it's prime again......and it's about 70% there, just awaiting paint.


How much is the cheapest possible can of paint/primer to cover this boat?

I was offered a '92 15hp Merc. & a '96 10hp Johnson Both for very reasonable prices- Will these push this boat?
10hp is alot cheaper so i may go that route......But if i'm going to be swept away by the current with such a low HP i'll go with the 15??

I'm not looking to go offshore or race jetskis here, just want a little speed for safty as well as 'fun'.

so will 10hp push it OK?
How about 15hp, any big noticible differance ?


this is just for now, and then i will either put a 25hp or a 35hp- 35hp will push this nice, right??

Ok it's time.

I am going to boaters world this weekend to pick up what i need to paint the boat:

i have a $ 200 max limit- Can it be done? It's a fishin' boat and dont need to be very shinny, I just want it to look better then it does now- I don't care about good paints, I am not planning on owner her for a long time so just to get a few years of enjoyment out of the paint :)

I heard on the Iboats.com forum that i don't have to primer it-if you dont wanna, and can just slap paint on, and it looks just as good. are they BSin' me?

I don't understand all of this- can you buy one can of paint, one can of primer and paint it, or do you need to mix paints w/ all kinds of chemicals?

I am thinking on Using Interlux as it is kinda affourdable paint.

1 part, 2 part what does all this mean?

I tried searching this and many sites but can't seem to find the answer- so again this is my last resort asking yas :(


I am going to use a roller- while my uncle or dad or whoever uses a fine brush to get the bubbles out, Is this correct?

Almost 4got.

Can i use normal Topside paint on the bottom as well? It's trailered and will never spend more the 24 hrs in the s/w at a time- and if so---will be scrubbed. waxed and cleaned again :D


will the paint come off on the rollers after a few loadings, like some bottom paints do?

Not being pickey- But i would like the boat RED- WHITE- AND BLUE or atleast White and Red.

Forget buying the paint right now, you need sandpaper! And make sure you pick up some extra sandpaper. And if you have some spare change left, pick up some more sandpaper. Remove everything you possibly can off the boat and put it in plastic bags with diagrams as to where it goes. If you don't have one, buy a random orbit sander, the kind that spin and vibrate simaltaneously. After you have removed all the screws you will need to drill out the ones you've stripped (unless you can grab and spin them with a pair of vice grips). Remeber, remore everything you can. The paint WILL fail at the joint if you try to paint up to something. Now start to sand. Use the highest grit you can get away with. Hopefully you won't need 60 grit! Keep the sander moving back and forth. Resist the urge to tip the sander and use the edge. Sand the whole boat with the 80 (if you are lucky) and proceed thru the grits ie: 80-100-120-150. Change your sandpaper frequently. If the boat has bottom paint (antifouling) sand that last, using the discarded paper you've been changing frequently. Average lifespan of sandpaper used on bottom paint is about 10 seconds. Try to buy the sandpaper in bulk (not at Boaters World), at least 25 disks to a package. Anything under $.50 a peice is good. Don't use a belt sander! Do you have an auto shop in school? When you are done report back, you have alotta work ahead of you, Remember, dark colors show up holidays moreso than white. The higher the gloss the more they will show up. Better get some extra sandpaper!

Alright, if you have a compressor you can do a good job with a spray gun in your yard if you just take your time.I did 2 projects in the last 2 years with an old 2hp/20 gallon compressor and relatively cheap gun.
Check out my 23 Seacraft onwww.classicseacraft.com "Bill Sirotnak's" - I sprayed that with Petit Easypoxy, a relatively cheap 1 part marine paint but it should be perfect for your boat, and not as dangerous as a 2 part (you still need a respirator of course).
I'll try to put up this link to my son's Jetta I did with PPG Omni auto paint, which I think would work well for a boat also.That is a 2 step color/clear system, but again much cheaper than Imron or Awlgrip.

I don't have a respirator- that's why i need to use a roller.

Even doing roll & tip - this stuff can KILL you if you don't have a respirator. I'm very serious about this. You REALLY need to look into this a lot more first before starting this weekend. Another problem you will have is that you have the wrong temp ranges (too cold) and bad humidity if it snows. Unless you have a heated garage that does not use a combustion based heater that will go BOOM from the explosive & toxic fumes, you REALLY need to wait on this stuff. Did I mention that this Sheet could kill you? Or at least cause respiratory problems or cancer?

How much are you going to have into this boat? And where are you going to keep it?

John, you are mistaken, I'm not starting the painting this w/e, waayyyyy to cold, not only for the paint- but for me (i haven't even started stripping it yet :eek5: ) I'm buyin' the paint this w/e but it will sit until say-------- Mid March :eek5:

Everything you need to know is here. Boat painting supplies usually go on sale in mid-March. Sandpaper never goes on sale! It is hard to know what grits you will need, it's more of a trial and error process. Get your hands on a random orbit sander, hook and loop model if possible ( sandpaper attaches like velcro to the sander). Remember, preparation prior to painting is 95% of the work. If you must buy paint, pick up a quart of primer which you can use to practice with if you get a section ready and get a nice day. The finish painting goes very quickly. For example, my girlfriend and myself could pant the hull of our 37' Egg in a couple of hours tops. In fact you can't move slowly as the one part poly starts curing in about 3 minutes. You need to keep a "wet edge" at all times.

Not only is there a message board, but click on "The Boats" and there is a list of Manufactuers, Find MFG and check it out, alot of info..

You will definety find a buyer- theres collecters w/ like 30 boats of the same brand :eek5: It would be best to Include a Picture also.
