View Full Version : road signs
ProfessorM 06-09-2009, 05:50 PM Why in the world do we need to have highway markers every 2 tenths of a mile. All the highways have them now. What a colossal waste of $$$$$, never mind the urban blight look. There aren't enough signs on the sides of the road now. Visual pollution IMO.
Backbeach Jake 06-09-2009, 08:08 PM Those markers used to be real small, on reflectors every 1/10mile back in the day. When you saw an emergency you could report the incident with a very high degree of accuracy. But all before cell phones.
Mike P 06-09-2009, 08:51 PM And on every even milepost, they have the route number---just in case you forgot what highway you were driving on in the last minute or so
The other thing I love is the "Evacuation Route" signs on the Cape--du-uh, there's only two ways off the Cape and both of them are in the same general direction.
BigBo 06-09-2009, 10:29 PM That's funny. Me and macojoe were just talking about this last week. Someone's making a bundle.:bs:
redcrbbr 06-10-2009, 01:54 AM thing i noticed about those signs was how they seem to be about the right height to come right thru the windshield if you hit one. really stupid waste of $$ there devall. maybe his brother owns the sign company.
Swimmer 06-10-2009, 12:37 PM I think the state makes thier own signs. They used to anyway. Paul is right though, visual polution, it almost as bad as the trash on the GD ground.
justplugit 06-10-2009, 03:37 PM I think the state makes thier own signs. They used to anyway.
If not, someone made a large campaign contribution. :(
gone fishin 06-14-2009, 11:17 AM Gota love them when on the road..Radio reports as to where the speed traps are when traveling un familiar roads.
saltfly 06-14-2009, 11:30 AM I'd like to know the cost of one of them:hs:.I want the contract to replace the ones that get taken out by the snow plows.Maybe they should be different colors for N,S,E,W.:rotflmao:
Backbeach Jake 06-14-2009, 12:54 PM Those signs are replacement for decent paving. Driving on MA roads is the pits. Asphalt peeling and chuck holes everywhere, but we now have some very nice signs.
Mike P 06-14-2009, 06:24 PM We were in New Hampshire this weekend, and they're every .2 miles across the line along 93, too.
My guess is that they're Federally funded.
gone fishin 06-14-2009, 07:35 PM They have been in use for as long as I can remember, Are the signs you are referring to new? I think they were part of the highway building after WW2. If you were ever "on the road" you would have seen them in all states.
Swimmer 06-15-2009, 12:20 PM Wait till they put telephones back every two-tenths of a mile, "get people working". Wonder what happened to all those yellow call boxes.
ProfessorM 06-15-2009, 03:35 PM Yes new Don. I have seen them, mile markers that is, on some highways but not every 2/10th's of a mile. It is ridiculous.
Raven 06-15-2009, 04:20 PM the only good thing about them is being able to tell someone about to rescue you on the highway exactly where you are.
The other thing I love is the "Evacuation Route" signs on the Cape--du-uh, there's only two ways off the Cape and both of them are in the same general direction.
Yeah...I love this one! First time I saw them all I could think of was "do I have any other options"?????
Mike P 06-16-2009, 08:20 AM Yeah...I love this one! First time I saw them all I could think of was "do I have any other options"?????
How long can you tread water?
Swimmer 06-16-2009, 12:14 PM Yeah...I love this one! First time I saw them all I could think of was "do I have any other options"?????
More people must have scratched thier heads in amazement of the evac signs, your right, good point. I believe it is impossible to clear the cape of people. Look at the offload problem at the end of a holiday weekend.

Raven 06-16-2009, 06:17 PM saying that this or that highway construction project
is paid for with (our) stimulous money
and that is an acceptable use of the money
according to the current administration
i don't agree with that
not with so many bridges in disrepair...
ruhroh 06-17-2009, 03:46 PM Heard yesterday from a bud who works on the highway that it cost the state 2.8 million dollars for the signs and to install them.
