View Full Version : What camera????
nightfighter 06-17-2009, 07:51 PM What do you use? Looking for waterproof (I really liked TO's underwater pic in May Review thread) I saw a lot of small, thin cameras in use on Cuttyhunk this weekend.....so where are all the other pics guys?
I currently have a Pentax, but it is slow to shoot, and not user friendly IMO. Good pics, but I still feel limited by it.
JohnR 06-17-2009, 08:06 PM If you can find one, the Olympus 770SW takes more of a beating than the other SW series cameras.
Slingah 06-17-2009, 08:20 PM I have the Olympus 790SW....easy to use...still havent been able to bring myself to dunk it though
ivanputski 06-17-2009, 09:06 PM wal fart has a fuji waterproof camera advertised for 179.00 this week. Even if i had a waterproof camera, there is something in my brain that says this electronic device should NOT be under salt water, and would probably STILL keep it in a plastic bag, and just feel good about it when it happens to get wet from time to time...
striperman36 06-17-2009, 09:15 PM Olympus stylus rugged
Green Light 06-17-2009, 09:33 PM Cool!!
Thanks.
Now I know what I want for Father's day. :)
Finaddict 06-17-2009, 09:38 PM Ross - there was a good article on new waterproof, crushproof, shockproof and frost proof cameras ... it was either in today's Wall Street Journal, New York Times or USA Today. Don't remember which one, as I read through all of them today, but have a look online a bunch of new waterproof cameras that also can be dropped or smashed and will still work great.
Pete F. 06-17-2009, 10:17 PM I do have to warn you, a nice camera keeps big fish away
UserRemoved1 06-18-2009, 03:32 AM Just got the wife one of these for her birthday and it's a nice little camera.

Second Olympus digital and wouldn't buy anything else. Buydig was real quick and service was great.
tlapinski 06-18-2009, 06:48 AM I used an Olympus 770SW all last season. Dunked it, swam with it and took underwater pictures with it. I was very happy with it until I went to take a picture with it a few weeks back and noticed a crack on the screen and water inside the camera. Sent it back to Olympus for service last week. While I am sure things will turn out fine, I was quite shocked to see my shockproof / waterproof camera busted. Just another reason why I shouldn't be allowed to have nice things. :1poke:

I have the same. Nice camera.
fishbones 06-18-2009, 09:26 AM I got the Olympus SW1050 this past winter and it's been dropped on a hardwood floor, dropped on a concrete patio and brought into a pool several times. It still looks and works like brand new and takes nice pics. I haven't taken it fishing yet because that's one of the ways to guarantee the skunk for me. I'm sure I'll take it out when I get my son out bottom fishing, though.

Yeh, you can't do good stuff - and the 770 is rated tougher & deeper by Olympus than their other models :lama:
BassDawg 06-18-2009, 10:50 AM i just LOST the Stylus Tough-6000,
10 mega pixels, phenominal pix, and the newest
shockproof, waterproof, by Olympus~~~GREAT!!!
while it lasted, dadgummitttt :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall:
i owned the 770 for over a year until i left
it behind in a rental car while returning from DC.
that camera was the ballz and very surf friendly.
would have gotten THAT one again, but the 6000
was the upgraded and newer version that i didNOT
keep long enuff to fully appreciate its durability and
practicality on the rocks. be sure to get the "waterproof"
carrying case that BestBuy and others sell by REI, i think???
and when it's a N'oreaster out there i place the camera
and it's case inside a plastic bag. then inside my backpack,
somewhat anal, i know~~just trying to hedge my bets, as it were!!

I have the same, wicked pissah:kewl:
Crafty Angler 06-19-2009, 04:09 AM I was looking at the Olympus 1030 SW earlier this Spring and figured that was gonna be it for me - then went to B&H Photo and found it has been discontinued...
Looks like it's been replaced by the Tough series...but at $400+ I'm already halfway home to a Nikon D90, which is compatible with all my old Nikkor lenses...
I was actually going to order an Olympus today - I like B&H in NY, used to buy all my film (hey - anybody remember film...:hihi:...) and Hassy stuff from them...I dunno, just looking for a point and shoot right now, water & weatherproof...
One way or another, I'm gonna drag myself kicking and screaming into the 21st Century at some point this afternoon
Maybe the 770 is the way to go...I'll have to price one out...

2boxers 06-19-2009, 12:21 PM Has anyone used the canon D10? I am a canon guy I shoot a 50D just about everyday, but I wanted something I can bring fishing.
tynan19 06-19-2009, 07:48 PM Crafty, I am debating on getting the D90 or a Cannon SLR. My wifes cannon digital takes great shots so I imagine there SLR takes some great ones as well. I use the 770 and love the fact it works in all conditions. It seems to require a lot of light to make great shots. It does not take the best night photos though. Backbeaches' Pentax seems to work well at night.
Crafty Angler 06-20-2009, 05:28 AM Casey, check out the Nikon D90 here:
http://www.nikonusa.com/Find-Your-Nikon/Product/Digital-SLR/25446/D90.html
It gets great reviews - I have a friend who has one and he loves it, it's a great camera - also does the 24fps video, which is the frame rate in cinema. They have examples of the D-movies on the site and it's pretty impressive. The only drawback in the D-movies is the sound from what I've heard, but if you get serious about using that function you might be able to go with an external mic.
Canon is good too but I'd have to give Nikon the nod - of course like I said I've got a lot of the older Nikkor lenses and the D90 is still compatible with all of them, so for me it's a no-brainer. Nikon optics are tough to beat -
Still leaning toward the Olympus for the waterproof point and shoot though - just trying to find something around the $300 mark + or - ....or otherwise I may just bite the bullet and go with the D90

Way less than 300 on amazon
Adam_777 06-20-2009, 10:11 AM I got an 850SW Olympus. It serves it's purpose as a camera to take pictures of fish.Doesn't get much use.Was trolling for bass or blues but ended up finding fish breaking the surface.Funny watching a fluke get air born going after a slow trolled prey swimmer.I was pulling the swimmer with a teaser. So I just put on a bucktail and threw a worm on and bam.Crab on the teaser.Ended up throwing back a couple short fluke. The crab was safely returned to dwell on the bottom.:hihi:
