View Full Version : Just outta curiousity...
Notaro 07-10-2009, 03:27 AM Hey guys, I was fishing down Wings Neck on my uncle's backyard and I was catching scups last night. But also baby black seabass and dogfish. Just curious, are scups as active as stripers and blues? I find this hard to believe because I naturally assumed that scups aren't nocturnal predators. Can anyone here care to enlighten me about this topic?
Thanks.
PS: I was hoping for a fluke last night. =/
Rob Rockcrawler 07-10-2009, 03:36 AM A friend of mine doesnt scup fish during the day, says its a waste of time. Ive only fished for em during the day, switching over to bass at night.
Notaro 07-10-2009, 03:43 AM That was what I was tryign to do, but I didn't expect them to be hitting it at night.
WESTPORTMAFIA 07-10-2009, 11:58 AM They do and its a nice time to hook on in the shnoz and let em swim.

yeah ...and if you can cut a fin a bit, to injure them a bit more ... boy that's one distress signal that will get heard around the area ... bass love scup ...
Notaro 07-10-2009, 02:32 PM how do i hook it? do i need any special rig to keep it on the bottom or what? i recall a big swirl in the water.
I've seen people fishing for them at dusk at spots I fished. Three guys fishing and they had this older woman filleting them - she was an expert - she had about 1/2 a five gallon bucket of fish store quality fillets.
Notaro 07-10-2009, 04:10 PM Yeah, but why would they be active at night, Joe? I thought that they are more of daytime fishes.
I don't know - but this time of year there is very little true night and last night the moon was screaming bright.
WESTPORTMAFIA 07-10-2009, 04:23 PM I catch them at night with no problems. If they are around they will bite just like daytime.

That's what I was thinking of. Saw the moon and it had something to do with it.
scoobe 07-13-2009, 10:53 PM Joey, don't forget that the regs still apply for scup used as bait. Is it still 10" min? That's what it used to be when I left.

10.5. But I don't use it as a bait. Hardly see any bigger fish around.
