Hello all. My brother in law is in the Air Force and has been in South Korea for the past year. He is on leave and will be visiting us for a week. We are going to be in Charlestown for a while and I want to take him fishing, he loves to fish! How has the fishing been in the area? Any advice from anyone who is in the area would be appreciated. I have plenty of gear to fish the beaches or the breachways. I would like to put him on some fish while we are there.

Thanks in advance,

Vic

Vic, if you see Ronnie at Breachway Bait and tackle (right there on Charlestown Beach road), I'm sure he can get you set up with everything you need.

Thanks Brian,

I always stop there when I am in the area. He always has eels. I was hoping for some info on how the fishing has been. What have people been catching and so forth. I will need to get some clamming permits at the shop as well!

Thanks again,

Vic

Welcome to fish Deep Hole next door in Matunuck. Coffee's on me for your bro in law and his service. Can't promise fish as it's been a bit hit or miss.

Thanks Gobi. May take you up on that. I have never fished over that way. My BIL has never fished in RI.

fishing down here has been hit or miss like gobi said. i have had my best luck with small plugs like the yo-zuri mag darter, and any stubby needle. drifting eels on the drop is also a good bet. if you are taking your brother in law to any of the b-ways for the first time you should explain the "rotation" to him before you guys get out there. i would save the b-ways for a week night as the weekends tend to get a little crazy out there, thats just my personal opinion. must of all have fun and be safe!

I fish the area by boat mostly, and it's been pretty consistant down there for about a month now. Couldn't say how the beach fishing is, unfortunately.

gobi said it best. hit or miss. tides could screw you up some. congestion is an entirely different story. vacation time for many.

Thanks for the replies fellas. We will give it a go and see how it works out. I have fished the area many times and it seems to always be hit or miss on the breachways and the beaches. I am hoping we get lucky and hit it right. It would put a smile on my face to see him stretch a line a little!

Thanks again,

if you fish the breachways make sure you wear korkers.

Well a good time was had. I arrived late weds. night., about 11.30. I said to my bil, lets take a ride to the breachway? It was nasty out there, very high waves and windy. I only brought a small rod with us as my bigger rods needed new line and I was going to have them spooled at the tackle shop in the morning. There were about six guys on the rocks with us. I put on a smiling bill and tell my bil here take a few shots with this. On his third cast the rod is bent over and the line is coming off the reel! The fish made three nice runs on him and he starts to get it to the front of the breachway after about twenty minutes. The other guys want to help land the fish,(remember Barts advice on the korkers), a huge wave breaks on the end of the breachway. Knocks my bil on his butt and takes out two other guys. One if them gets his ankle caught in the rocks and may have broken it! Lost the fish in the rocks on the end of the breachway. Took about a 1/2 hour to get the fella back to his car, (Shawn if you read this I hope you are doing well), no more fishing that night.

Thurs. night was a wash out, Fri at sunset we ran into a school of small bluefish and had a great time with some poppers,(creek chubs), and we both caught a few fish each. Nothing else after that. Sat night was very quiet. All in all he had a great time and stretched the line and bent the rod. It was a success. Thank you guys for the input.

Nice that ya had a good time. That's too bad about the fella with the hurt leg. One has to be careful out there. And even more careful than that.:)
