View Full Version : Upcoming flea market
Mike P 07-23-2009, 08:38 PM The Stan Gibbs Cape Cod Canal Fishing Classic is a small, invitation-only association of Canal regulars who run a month long tournament to honor the memory of Stan Gibbs. Several SBers are members--myself, Tagger, clambelly, Sea Dangles, TonyO to name a few. One of our goals is to donate a memorial statue honoring all Canal fishermen, which we would like to have erected in the park adjacent to the RR bridge parking lot. The Town of Bourne has apparently given the go-ahead for the statue, as long as it is 100% self funded by ourselves. To this end, the tournament committee is planning to hold a flea market in the town park there, tentatively scheduled for August 29 and August 30. Booths or tables will be sold to anyone who is interested in selling, and it's not limited to fishing gear---any household items would be welcome. The committee chairman spoke to me this morning, and the price for a booth or table (probably tables) will be $30. Two or more people can also split a table. This would be an excellent chance for folks to sell gear they don't want, for plugbuilders, guys who pour their own plastic, and so on. Food and soda/coffee would also be available at a reasonable charge.
As the plans get firmed up, I'll provide more information, including who to contact to reserve a table. Also, I'll try to keep current on who is going to exhibit. Some plugmakers whose product is both in demand and hard to find are SGCCCFC members and should be exhibiting, I would think. ;)
This is just an early heads-up. Further details will follow when they become available.

They have a dedicated account at Citizens Bank for statue donations--I'm just trying to confirm that it's up and running. I'm also trying to find out whether they have a Paypal account set up to take donations.
JohnR 07-24-2009, 07:22 AM Maybe S-B can get a couple / few tables and have a member fishing stuff "Flea Market". Some additional proceeds going to the fund...
Mike P 07-24-2009, 07:29 AM Forgot to mention that it will probably be "bring your own table" and the $30 gets you space to set it up. If there's a problem someone would probably be able to come up with a folding table.
The tourney is only getting the table space money, and whatever profit they make off the food and beverages. Every dime you make from sales will be yours to keep. The goal is 100 tables, which will raise $3000 for the statue fund, plus a few bucks from food sales. Some of these guys can really work a grill, and make a great chowdah.
$30 for a chance to sell some excess gear, old household good you no longer need or want, or your product along the Canal is really reasonable these days, I would think. The park gets a lot of traffic on weekends, and not just fishermen. Walkers, bikers, rollerbladers--especially rollerbladers :eyes: That's why household items will be especially welcome.

Mike P 08-26-2009, 05:52 PM Bump with a reminder--it's this coming Saturday at the town park near the RR Bridge in Buzzards Bay. Should be a lot of stuff there--opens at 9 and I think it'll be well attended, so the early bird probably gets the choicest worms.
mag minnow 08-26-2009, 06:15 PM I've got a table and am looking forward to getting some gear I don't use into hands that can along with sniffing out some deals for myself as well. It should be a good time for a great cause. Hope to see many there...mm
redlite 08-26-2009, 06:41 PM can I still get a table on short notice?????
If so, I can try and get rid of a ton of my stuff instead of waiting on line for bites.

If there's still space available--and I think there is--you can get one at the event for $40.
My feeling is that they'd make room for you anyway ;)
JohnR 08-27-2009, 07:49 AM Ouch. No time to put something together now. Crap. Thought it was a little later. Will still donate.
blondterror 08-27-2009, 07:54 AM Great.. I have been looking forward to this event...
I just signed up with Dave K for a table to sell my handmade plugs and handturned bowls.
If tropical Storm "danny" comes through as forecast on Sat it looks like the date will be moved to this Sun.

Flaptail 08-27-2009, 11:35 AM Is this the same group trying to get a statue of stan Gibbs put up? I knew Stan probably better than 90% of those guys and I tell you he would think it was the dumbest idea going.:uhuh:
I know he would say take the money and fight for access or help out those in need rather than a statue.
Probably why I was never "invited" into the brotherhood.

The image on the statue is supposed to be modeled on that famous picture of Stan hauling two cows off Town Neck Beach. But it's not a memorial to Stan, as I understand it. It's supposed to be dedicated to the anglers, past and present, who fish the Canal.
BTW Steve--did you ever ask to be "invited"?

Wow, thats great!
Sea Dangles 08-28-2009, 06:43 AM That was just Flap dropping names again anyhow. Don't let the content of his words get in the way.
Mike P 08-28-2009, 08:26 AM If Danny blows/washes out tomorrow, the rain date is Sunday, August 30.
Mike P 08-28-2009, 01:58 PM It's off. The tournament committee has decided that the whole weekend is going to be a washout and because of the park's location in a wetland, the field will still be a mess on Sunday.
It will be re-scheduled for a later weekend.
numbskull 08-28-2009, 02:33 PM Shhhhhhhhhhh.....don't tell Eddy.
Mike P 08-28-2009, 03:58 PM Now re-scheduled for Columbus Day weekend--Saturday the 10th of October, with an October 11 rain date.
I couldn't let poor Eddy drive all the way from Brockton in a monsoon for nothing :rotf2:
Tagger 08-28-2009, 05:33 PM Thanks Mike ..:) Numby ...:devil2:
