View Full Version : Ron Arra with a VS found at Napatree
Headhunter 08-10-2009, 06:29 AM Yesterday late afternoon a friend that runs a local bait shop called and asked if I knew any one that ran a gold bailed VS on a Ron Arra which was found at Napatree point along with a frogskin top and a plug bag. Didn't really ring a bell with me but I told him to tell the authorities to track the serial # of the VS and it would most likly bring them to the owner. My wife called me this am on her way to work and said they found the guy, he was ok and had left the area after being hit by a wave? I think he was a novice to napatree and couldnt handel the nats this time of year, they can get so bad thet if you had to look for your gear that you put down they could actually drive you back to the parking lot if your not dressed prorerly. Not to assume but a "gold " "bailed" VS could lead me to believe he was a novice? I hope that statment dosent offend anyone it is not ment to. If you need to dunk a reel and are new to fishing the bailed VS would be a good choice. Gold on the other hand wouldnt be my finish of choice.
Bocephus 08-10-2009, 09:04 AM just out of curiosity, what color reel should a novice own that will enable him or her to catch more fish? sorry, its monday and it had to be done :rotf2:
stcroixman 08-10-2009, 10:32 AM That sounds like a lot of $$$$$$$$$ for a "novice" to spend on a setup. BTW, I don't own a VS and don't plan on ever spending $800 on a reel.
Rockport24 08-10-2009, 10:54 AM dude must have either been scared chitless or just really rich to leave that kind of equipment behind
Swimmer 08-10-2009, 11:20 AM Unless he was being chased by a crazed gunman I can think of no reason to leave that gear there.
There was a report on NBC 10 last night of someone who was knocked into the water at Watch Hill Light but then turned up later ok. Westerly Police should know who he was - it was reported that he left gear on the rocks. It did not say he was at Napatree, but those early reports are often inaccurate. Maybe he had a moment of clarity and decided to quit while he was ahead.
The Iceman 6 08-10-2009, 11:36 AM Regardless, hope this guy is alright and he gets his gear back

Maybe he had a moment of clarity and decided to quit while he was ahead. It was reported today on the news that he was at naps I did not know what kind of gear he had but if Bob is right that is alot of money to leave behind because of getting hit by a wave,I would almost bet this guy was on the beach and not the rocks.I could not imagen any one leaving that type of gear behind for any reason other then needing both hands to drag catch back to car!HAHA!
Redsoxticket 08-10-2009, 12:41 PM We will eventually find out what what transpired.
He probably gave up his search for his misplaced gear. If he was using a light to foind his gear , the bugs will be attraced to the light source. It is so thick that your literally chocking and breating bugs along with being bite.

Headhunter 08-10-2009, 03:41 PM Redsox you are correct about the bugs. This time of year you cannot fish the naps with out being completly covered, gloves and a head net is mandatory. If he had 2 rods with him left his gear on the rocks, got hit by a wave on top of being bitten to death he might have opted to leave the equipment and come back in the morning. The bugs are bad out there once they are on you if you dont have a head net you can't breath with out breathing them in. I personally like all black when I am fishing at night , my reel included. If you are going to dunk your reel on a consistsnt basis, deep wading/wetsuiting, a vs is a nice pc of equipment to have.
Headhunter 08-10-2009, 03:46 PM Well the gear was found in shallow water, so he probably got knocked down at a higher tide and couldn't find the gear. He was from Tolland Ct and found safe and sound at home. The article is in tonights Westerly Sun. I bet they found him by the serial # on the VS
JohnnyD 08-10-2009, 04:55 PM I bet he appreciates getting his $1000 investment back.
Some people just shouldn't be allowed to fish alone at night. It's dangerous enough if you have a clue.
WoodyCT 08-10-2009, 04:59 PM No wading belt and no dry top.:smash:
Too boot the coast guard sent a chopper from woods hole to look around for a body- what a waste of money :hs:

mag minnow 08-10-2009, 05:20 PM I hoping on a good BST deal on an Arra and VS setup soon...
WoodyCT 08-10-2009, 08:18 PM The search and rescue people gathered everything up in hopes of finding ID, thus he will get it back.
And I hope they charge him for at least part of the cost of sending all the machinery and people to look for him.
He must have really been in a bad state of mind to leave all that behind and get home without even telling anyone it was there, much less consider that people finding his belongings would assume the worst and call in authorities.:conf:
Thumper 08-10-2009, 08:51 PM remember kids don't drink/do drugs while fishing. you will find yourself falling in the water and then completely forgetting you had a $1k+ setup with you. to bad it wasn't at the light house i would of had my self a nice new rod and reel :).

stupidjet 08-11-2009, 09:40 AM i like how you guys assume a novice b/c he used a bailed vs...
JohnR 08-11-2009, 10:04 AM I don't think it is the end of the world. Fortunately the guy is OK.
But like mentioned in this thread, what do you do when you're the guy that finds all the gear - fear for the worst and call the CG, eh?

Thats what we (JoeP and I) did when we found the kayak upturned at the River...
actually I stopped at NPD and let them decide what to do...
bloocrab 08-11-2009, 10:55 AM Gotta be a lot more to this than we'll ever know.
When I play it back in my head, (my idea of how it may have happened)....it just don't make sense.
Dudes' GOTTA have a lot of coin or something psycho going on in his head.
For $1,000.....how long would you stay on a gnat infested beach?
Not only leave your rod, but leave your plugbag and frogskin top? HUH??
I'm thinking he was on an Acid trip, ......got out there started fishing....then when he really started tripping, he thought the gnats were blood-s#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&g vampires coming to kill him.......he stripped down and ran for the hills.....they also found clothes scattered along the beach... :jump1:
Back Beach 08-11-2009, 10:56 AM i like how you guys assume a novice b/c he used a bailed vs...
Actually anyone who uses any type of VS, bailed or not, is a novice.
Glad the guy is ok.
rphud 08-11-2009, 11:07 AM Yes, there is some serious money in Tolland. Wall to wall McMansions for the most part.

And I think we can safely say the same about those who use a Newell:rotf2:
On top of that, What *(*^& is he doing at the Naps at the beginning of August. That's late November water, man.

Jesus, it took long enough for someone to respond to a VS bash. Guys must be losing it here. Either that or they're all buying Saltigas....:uhuh: :laugha:

:biglaugh:
Just glad he's OK
ivanputski 08-11-2009, 04:40 PM a lot of "correct color/model/type peer pressure" going around... Geeeez... tough crowd... and you thought life would finally get easier when your acne cleared up and you graduated high school... its like showing up on the first day of school in spaldings instead of Nikes... the guy in spaldings is still gonna get laid if he plays his cards right.

Or maybe it's because he couldn't handle the situation he put himself in, he lost over $1000 and then left it behind - all without informing anyone.
If I lost that kind of gear, I'd head right over to the police station immediately in hopes someone found it and to be sure another surfcaster didn't find my gear with the thought of me being face down a mile out.
piemma 08-12-2009, 03:34 AM not just late november water mr piemma :jump:
That may be true but there are easier places to fish in August with no bugs, few people and no 1 1/2 mile r/t walk.
Novenber is the time to hit the Naps. Week before Thansgiving and the Big Girls will stack up around the corner.:uhuh:

All the really hip and and cool guys are buying Stella SW's. :hihi:
Mike P 08-12-2009, 06:09 PM What actually happened to the guy?
I'm sure that all of the self-styled internet experts here in this thread can tell you--they've doped it all out without even being there. Hell, he was using a bailed reel, after all. :rollem:
numbskull 08-12-2009, 07:00 PM . its like showing up on the first day of school in spaldings instead of Nikes... the guy in spaldings is still gonna get laid if he plays his cards right.
What effing cards were you supposed to play if you wore PF Flyers and glasses is what I never could figure out

I thought it was the single speed Schwinn bike that did me in. Years later I figured out that the guys who talked about it the most were mostly hallucinating.

Are you the guy?
I have certainly found myself in very scary situations - most due to me being stupid.

12 post and this "gentleman" chooses to insult all of the old "pros"
numbskull 08-13-2009, 05:06 PM Ahhhhhh...let it pass. After all, I think someone just compared me to a blind squirrel looking for his nuts.........which except for the bushy tail probably isn't too far from the truth.
