OK, I want to have a Summer 2009 Story Contest with the winner winning a new custom plug or two. The kids fishing story will have a couple lures for the kids .

Couple suggestions for categories:

1) Funny
2) Man and the Sea type ultimate fishing challenge / best fish story
3) Take a Kid Fishing
4) Sea Story (No $4!t but I don't believe it)

We'll run this for a week and change.

How about having a shaft snap at the strut w/ no impact (i.e. didn't hit anything) at 24kts @ 0230 on the south side of Coxes en route to the Edge.... drifted till dawn and trolled home @ 8kts on one screw... :( :( :(

Ummmm Jess, It's been on for 6 weeks or more.....

How's this:
I was fishing at Houghton's Pond in Milton last week. It was an after work trip that, like so many others, didn't look too promising. I had been having some luck with a "thumping toad" rigged on a 4/0 weedless worm hook, and was casting in and around the lily pads with visions of a decent bass or pickerel expolding beneath it. Well, after a half hour of no action, I caught some movement off to my right, and saw a leopard frog hop for it's life as the water it had previously occupied erupted quite vigorously. I immediately thought that this was my chance to nail a decent fish, seeing that it would probably still be lurking in the shallows, looking for an easy meal. I gingerly tossed my artificial frog into the same spot the frog had just vacated, and was surprised with the speed of the strike.
Oh, it was a hit, a shockingly swift hit that hit it's mark with laser-like accuracy, only it wasn't a bass or pickerel. It was a bullfrog. The damn thing had been chasing the smaller frog, and took after my offering like a hungry dog to a steak. Needless to say I caught the frog, which was now sporting a pierced lip. I unhooked him and tossed him back with my warning "See what happens when you mess with MY FROG!" I tossed the frog back into the same spot a few moments later and another SOB bullfrog had taken his place!

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!

Just a couple weeks ago, during the first week of August, I had an amazing experience. Was in my buddies boat with my son off the Maine coast. My son was using a zubiki rig to catch Macks for bait. I'm sure everyone knows, but just in case, a zubiki rig is about 6 feet of line with 7 flies tied about every 10 inches along it. He was doing well, catching 4, 5, even 6 Macks at a time. He yells to me, "Dad, of got a mack on every hook!" Sure enough, his rod, with 30 lb. test is bent over and you can see the macks down 15 feet flashing silver. He starts to bring it up and WHAM!!!! his rod is almost pulled out of his hands! A striper has engulfed one of the macks! Then wham again! He's got 2 stripers on! Well, now the line is ripping out and a third striper's on. Well, you guessed it, before long he's fighting a whole school of stripers - 7 of them! It took 2 hours but he landed them and released each one. 20-25 lbs each.
Has this happened to anyone else?

never heard of that happening before Joe but I see it is possible. I've used a Sabiki rig but the pound test line would break if a bass hit the bait, I guess the zubiki rigs have stronger line. That must have been quite an experience:fishin::kewl:

Yeah, all the time while I'm sleeping. Are you telling me you had 7, 25# bass on 1 rod and reel and you landed all 7? So let's see that's 175 pounds of fighting bass on 30# test. must be a world record.

I have some land in Florida that is nice and dry to sell you.

Here's another one (a personal favorite of mine):
My dad and I used to fish freshwater regularly, up until his passing in 2001. One of our regular trips was to Nickerson State Park for a long weekend of camping and fishing in a few of the ponds in that park.
We were fishing from a 12 foot pram/jonboat on a Sunday. Keep in mind that our days ran from sun-up to sun-down, without setting foot on land until it was time to head back to camp. We had been having an average days' action with rainbows, browns, bass and plenty of 4-6 inch perch. My dad liked using his flyrod, with sinking line while I preferred spinning gear. We were nearing the end of our day as well as our bait, and we were a little tired of all the little yellow perch we were getting (too many to count).
My father had just gooten a bite and was pulling up one line when he began getting hits on his other, so I offered to finish pulling up the first line so he could concentrate on the second. The fish on the line I was handling was a typically 4-6 inch perch, but when I pulled it up alongside the boat, a HUGE smallmouth came up and inhaled the perch and began swimming back down. I had let go of the line (out of surprise at seing the bass) and informed my father of what had just happened. I quickly gave the line a tug, with the rare chance of hooking the bass with the hook that was in the perch, but no such luck. The perch popped out of the bass' mouth and the fish was gone. (or so I thought....)
Dad had been fishing near the bottom of this particular area of the pond, and had been getting hits from the perch that were down there, when he announces that he's snagged on the bottom, or worse, on the anchor line. He was pumping the rod like he was trying to jiggle it free, and I told him to stop for a second. He asked me "Why?" and I replied "You can't be snagged on the anchor line, because it's behind me, not on your end of the boat!"
I asked him to stop moving the rod for a second, at which point we could definitely see the rod tip jerk up and down, the mark of a fishes head shake. His rod was literally doubled at this point.
It took him at least 15 minutes to fight the fish to the boat on his fly rod, but when it was over, he was the proud owner of a HUGE smallmouth that would go approx. 5+lbs. I have a picture of him holding the fish under his chin and the tail resting on his lap.
I'll bever forget him saying "I'm stuck on the anchor line, and then the look on his face when I told him that the anchor was BEHIND me!

That's another of my stories and I'm sticking with it as well!

This crazy guy is trolling horse bally off p-town this week and hooks 2 slob tuna. We were out in the shipping lanes when the guy goes buzzing by the boat in a kayak. Everybody on board is like is that guy in a kayak. He hooked the fish at 8:30 a mile off the beach and ended up 7 miles out at 10:15. He came on our boatat 10:30 and then we fought the fish till 12:15 till the line parted. I don't know what he was thinking in a 9ft kayak over 10 miles from where he started. It took almost 1/2 hour to get him back to the beach on a plane going 25mph. I guess the first fish planed him out at over 10mph for 20 min. The total fight time on the second fish was almost 4 hrs, and when we broke it off it took a run as if it had never been hooked.

that's gotta suck!

The other night it was late and I was having a hard time tying some leaders with the fluorocarbon I had. I called my friend and he said to find some 25 lb mono. I look through my bags and bingo there was a spool. I start lacing them up - I even added my teaser rigs. I don't know what made me look again but I spotted the price tag on the spool and it said WOOLWORTHS. I can't even remember when the last Woolworths was around. It was probably 20 years ago - gotta love that Ande line. I tossed the line but I probaly should have saved it for a collectors item.

odd....I was tossing bucktails with Rudy from the SWE in early July in heavy surf in a very rocky area when I found bottom 50 or 60 yards off and had to break it off, I tied on another and cast and reeled up noticing that my bucktail looked odd...there hanging from my new bucktail was the one that I'd just lost hanging upside down hook to hook...no line, no mess of weed, just the lure....both tied by me so I know that it was the one I'd just lost...I mentioned Rudy as he is my witness, mentioned the terrain because I could envision this maybe happening bouncing along a sandy bottom but not this type of bottom, hard to calculate the odds given the distance, seas and structure but pretty neat...it was during a great week of fishing so I figured I was just ON!

best....first trip out with my 10 year old daughter this season early on she hooked up with a 28" bass on her first cast, this was prior to any reports of any "keepers" roaming the local waters, she's addicted and get's better each time out...hope she'll still find time when she gets a little older...

Great story with catching your bucktail - who wooda thunk. Tell your daughter congrats, great fish!!!

reposting this up for my son. Quite an accomplishment for some teenagers. Running the boat, fighting the fish and landing it throughout a night long battle.I'm pretty proud


"Was not going to post this, but decided to any ways. Left barnstable harbor with my buddy Sean, Ben, and Bens little brother tucker at 4pm. Found fish pushing, but they went down. We stuck around for a while expecting a feed. With the outgoing tide we decided to work our way in and find the tuna again. Boy did we find them. A blitz a 1/4 mile long. We pulled into them and sean casts. HOOKED UP! 7pm. me and sean passed the rod back and forth for 6 and a half hours before i finally ended the game with the poon at 130am in 18 FOW off race point, 8 miles or so from where we hooked up. This fish was still making 150 yard runs after 3 hours. We tried everything to kill this fish. We did nothing wrong that I can see, and had the right gear. Fish was landed on a 1800 saragosa, 80 pound daiwa braid with 100 pound leader."
