I think it's changed by a week or two overall in the past few years; it's just later in general now. Is this global warming?

water temp was 65 at the narry shoreline fri. out in 50ft. of water
long way to go.

Took my dogs to a beach up the Sakonnet for a swim early yesterday AM and saw the first big blitz of the season about 100 yds off the shingle...:)

Stuck my hand in the water for a temp check and it was high 60's if not 70 up there - out front it's not much cooler, maybe a couple of degrees depending

I'm thinking we're still running a couple of weeks late on everything this year

I'm ready for big baits to show any time soon but outside of yesterday morning it still feels - and fishes - like summer mode...:hs:

Picked up a nice old school honey lami I bought from some old SoCo geezer that I'm dying to christen, too...:laughs:

I beat the water for hours last night at a place that rarely leaves me stranded short of at least sacrificing of plugs or eels to bluefish but also puts out decent bass.

Nada. Only hit I had was when I misjudged the retrieve and hit myself in the forehead with my eel.

Judging by the wave I took to the face the other morning in the dark on a rockpile in an UDL the water was warmer than the air by quite a bit.I couldn't believe how warm it was.I'd say a while to go but after last years early ending I'm not convinced the bass follow temps completely. There was rivers of bait last year in late Oct flowing out of the bay and toward ct without a fish under it.Could see it thick and clear as day.Time will tell ,keep your line wet as much as possible.Keep the yak loaded and ready at all times for the blitzes just out of reach.A good noreaster could flush the bays and push the herd down south faster.

i'm hearing you on the tardiness factor.

my big producer is at least three weeks behind,
sux for The Cup!! although i had a herd of schoolies
thru there a few days ago, i've yet to sea the BITE that makes
me pound that spot and it's usually stacked full with lahhhge by now.

so far, nada! it's definitely more like summer. and where is the surf this year outside of the two Hurricanes? ALL weekend it was like glass out there,,,,,,,,,eerily calm/dead up THE Other Cape way,,,,,,,,and there's been many optimal moon tides that have given us flat seas this year. most of the spots i haunt require 2'-4' and higher to turn ON.

am going to PA this w/e to watch my nephew play football~~~
so i'll have to check it out the following w/e. keep at it, gents!
it is still mighty EARLY, and yer fish of a Lifetime is still lurking out there!!!

Seriously, don't sit around waiting for the migration as they may not show in the same places/same time as years past. I've been experiencing slow to no production on big fish at all of my go to spots.
Be assured big fish are being taken in good quantities in some locations both by shore and boat, just not by me.

Guys,,, it is on full bore RIGHT NOW. Seriously. There are BIG bass plundering through, and more medium sized (20 - 30lb class) fish than you can shake a rod at. When you find them, please remember to be good stewards of the resource and practice catch & release if you don't need the meat.

I write this as I struggle to keep my eyes open at work, wishing I wasn't too sore and tired to go back out again tonight....

This one is from Friday night, and is small compared to what I experienced last night.....

Have had a tough week. Sunday we worked our tails off to find bass that would eat. Some fish around but seemed to be working shrimp hatches and did not want anything else. Wind and tide change and the blues were hitting anything that moved. Saw alot of real estate and it was a beauteous day!

Busted my a$$ 4 nights straight in the Ditch for a few high teen to low 20# fish. Big fish are NOT there. I fished East to West with the tides and back the other way over the last 4 days.

Anyone who says they are hammering large in the Canal is full of it or very very lucky. I have talked to all the regs and no one is doing great. I don't count 20#ers as doing great.

Tip. Then don't fish there. If I lived in RI, you'd be hard pressed to get me to fish the canal with so much productive water close by. Hell,,, I live in MA and would much rather drive to RI than fish the canal most of the time.

soooo, lemee get this straight!

we have several people saying that the big fish at their consistently
producing big fish udl's are off/slow from the Canal to Cape Ann,

we have one guy saying he's heard of some lahhhhge being landed but he hasn't done so himself,

we have one guy saying he's landed a COW in RI, KUDOS Jake, and

we have several guys saying they are landing teeners and 20#'ers regularily in MA ~somewheres. agreed piemma, not what we're looking for or referring to.

nobody is saying, "DON'T FEESH/WAIT for the Migration!" we simply are offering an anecdotal view as to the observed "Lack of Large" in places that have typically been known to produce them by this TIME of the migration. in short, for the most of us,,,,,,,,,,it's running a bit late, for most spots,,,,,,,,,,,,

by ALL means, keep pounding the surf, and i would be hitting it HARD were it not for my nephew's big game this Fri in CoalCountry, PA. why? because ya cain't catch, iffin ya don't wet a line! AND no one knows when the big gurls will come back to their familiar spots. we can only hope, hunt, and continue chunking/eeling/plugging away into the surf laden nights.

I dunno, the boat guys at a few locations are hammering some big fish according to some intel from last nite - may be taking a boat ride with the King of Clams to check it out

Monday nite I was out til 3 and it's starting to feel like somebody finally flipped the switch - it didn't have that summer feel although both air and water temps are still high for this time of year - just waiting for bigger baits - but it was definitely more active, which is why I was keeping burglar's hours

Ahhh, but herin lies the difference - BigFish's "Shore" is Far from the shore that "The Point" uses and there is the rub. They will be in different places and some places will be great and others suck. Changes year to year and day to day.

Judging from what I have seen myself as of late... If there is plentiful food source which there definitely is and the water temps hold and slow drop itll be a long fall... And just a word of advice.. There is no reason to fight over the internet.. Opinion are like colons every one has one and it stinks... I also am a new member to this site, And the statement Jakef made is why I dont participate regularly on other sites.. There are great places to fish from Florida to Maine were, when and how is your choice... But I have seen tons of sand eels, needle fish, bunker big and small, mullet, and silver sides.... all around so... I think its gonna be a long fall not a Late season so....

Talk to me about general stuff, equipment, tactics, but don't look for catch reports.

There is nothing wrong with talking about fish caught. There is a problem with jealous people. That's the bottom line. What should be fun gets ruined from someone who owns the ocean. It shouldn't be this way.

There is nothing wrong with talking about fish caught. There is a problem with jealous people. That's the bottom line. What should be fun gets ruined from someone who owns the ocean. It shouldn't be this way.

The problem happens on opinion. Some people like to catch small fish and target that but those with the opinion of only large fish count might frown on that. Is the guy catching the small fish somehow wrong? I don't think so, some people do.

There are others that feel that every fish needs to be released. Again, an opinion, but one people have and sometimes will voice that. Me, I release 99 point something of what I catch, do I think people that keep fish are evil? No. Do some think I should release everything? Yup.

And it isn't only jealousy - though that does happen sometimes. Some people are just having a bad day or grumpy. And some things just don't translate on the Interblab. So the problem usually comes in on opinion and people's feelings on a particular subject and once people get over the fact that not everyone needs to agree with them it gets so much easier. What instead happens is that people of differencing opinion clash like the mighty warriors of the keyboard. And sometimes people simply don't explain themselves well or properly or simply have a bad day.

I applaud Jake for going out and finding fish. He did the other night what I tried and couldn't do. Land a worthy fish. Kuddos. I will simultaneously applaud him and dope slap myself for not going large.

But at the same time me, you, him, or nobody else for that matter "owns" the only valid perspective or opinion on what's right, wrong, or indifferent.

And then there is that typing under the influence thing too :buds:

Boat -v- Shore
Plugs -v- Bait
Fly -v- Everyone else :rotf2:

Ok, that was just my opinion...

I have learned one thing and thats that people read their own agendas into every thread instead of really reading the initial thread and responding accordingly. This thread was not started as a way of finding catch reports, it was started to find an overall point of view in regards to when the fish might really start moving and to start some good hearted conversation......which brings me to the second thing I have learned......its tough to find any good hearted conversation about fishing on the interbet due to the influx of cyber fishing heros who think way too much of themselves. It will come when they're ready and that weather will play a key role...as will bait. There's more rain bait around than I've seen in years, so they're fat and happy pigging out on tiny morsels.

Hit the canal a few early mornings this week. Each day progressively saw more bait and top water action. I even got rid of the jinx and caught a couple small keepers and big bluefish.

Amount of bait I'm seeing is amazing. Small herring, pogies and macks, all in the 4-6" range. Tuna don't prowl the canal unless bait is prevalent.

With all the N/NW/NE winds, we'll start seeing some more consistent action (topwater too I hope) in the coming week. Lets hope it starts tonite because I'm heading out for an all nighter.
