Stiffy,
The canal is a real big place...I mean, there's 12 plus miles of shoreline...could you be more specific (pole #'s, tides, etc.) so I'm not chasing my tail too much?
Adam_777 10-08-2009, 06:24 PM I drove by this am and it was flat calm not a bird in sight or bait anywhere.:confused:Are you in the Panama Canal ?:rotf2:
Cool Beans 10-08-2009, 06:43 PM Fished the Panama Canal and Gatun Lake for peacock bass a few years ago. Very fun! And yes, the bass are running now in the Panama canal :grins:

what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
There's battle lines being drawn
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
Young people loosing their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind
I think it's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
What a field-day for the heat
A thousand people on the Canal
Singing about seals and carrying signs
Mostly say, hooray for our side
It's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
city hall strikes deep
Into your life they will sneak
It starts when you're always afraid
You step out of line, the man comes and takes you away
We better stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, now, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop,fishermen what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down

Good move. I fished all of my go to eel spots between 1am and 5am. Not even a touch. You might find this disturbing, but at the end of the night I said to myself "%$%$%$%$ these things" and dumped 2 dozen live eels back into the canal, tied on a shad, and hooked up one my first cast. There's hope for me yet. Probably stayed too loyal too long with the eels as I knew there were plenty of fish to be had by other means.

It also gets talked up on line so people believe its much better than it really is. What's going on right now is a mere fraction of what we caught the last three falls in terms of size and quantity. Seems folks are very hungry to catch this year given the slower than normal summer we had. Most of what's being caught is under 30".

stiff tip 10-09-2009, 04:13 PM those 2 fish were so big that it caused a 5 car pile up on the mid cape road . skip keeps way too many bass just give it away to the anyone. keep the small ones, a true fisherman would let them big girls go to reproduce. or does that make too much sense

That way, I can have the CANAL to myself!!!
LOL's!!!!!!!!!!
quick decision 10-09-2009, 04:45 PM WAS DEAD COLD THIS AFTERNOON
Sea Dangles 10-09-2009, 04:46 PM Why are there always fish where Numby decides to wet a line?
Why does anyone pay attention to anything Stiffy writes?
Why would an angler decide to free eels when I could eat them?
Why is Paul fishing the canal so much?
Why is DJ whining without cheese?
Why would you lose sleep to fish?
numbskull 10-09-2009, 04:53 PM those 2 fish were so big that it caused a 5 car pile up on the mid cape road . skip keeps way too many bass just give it away to the anyone. keep the small ones, a true fisherman would let them big girls go to reproduce. or does that make too much sense
It was only 3 cars and, to be honest, I think the old lady who caused it slowed to check out my dog.........the bass were already on the ground between the cars where I don't think she would have seen them. Of course, she might have been checking out Sauerkraut instead, he's getting pretty old.
I agree though, anything big is best allowed to swim off.....for the benefit of us all..
TheSpecialist 10-09-2009, 05:04 PM Skip is a great guy, old time retired phone guy to boot.
stiff tip 10-10-2009, 04:18 AM still keeps too many bigger fish i beleave hes a great fisherman. but why keep 2 fish at 25 and 30 lbs ,you gould feed a group of 12 people w/ those 2 fish... i think its glorie seaking ,look what i caught.it takes a true lover of bass fishing to let the big ones go .to kill a big fish this late in the season is a sin.let the big cow go to reproduce be a real sportsman.......
JohnnyD 10-10-2009, 11:12 AM let the big cow go to reproduce be a real sportsman.......
stiff tip, it's difficult to accept you criticizing people for keeping big fish when you make posts like the following that will motivate a lot of people (many that I'm sure will keep fish) to get down to the canal under specific conditions that seem to trigger the big fish
lots of odd ball fish moving through the canal for bait looks like p-bunker 2 to 4in long , butterfish , fry herrin , spike mac's ,and some 10in ling needlefish. but today lots of breaks for 2hrs .slow w/ poppers but some small fish . bass n blues.... found flaptail fishing deep w/ 6 fish landed. lots of small fish moving in the canal . could pop wide open any day w/ bigger fish . look for bad n/e weather ,and a cold hard blow, w/ bait moving south......
let others be a real sportsman and figure it out on their

your right no more canal info from me .but keep i mind i,ve fished the canal for the last 25yrs steady, i see lots of new faces there . w/ fish. its all my fault for the crowds.but be a hero to me and let the big GIRLS GO to reproduce ... so i can sell um.......
Flaptail 10-11-2009, 07:33 AM Dave, time to step away from the Ball Jar for a while, give it a week or twos' rest I would say. Youre giving up some surprising contradictions.:uhuh:
And to be honest the fishing there at the canal is not really that good for quality fish, mostly sub legal with the occasional 20 plus pounder.
Sure there are tons of fish but it would ten or twelve to get to 30 pounds. The hook is that an average angler may catch a bigger fish, that's the draw and the canal is easy access, daylight (except for those who are hard core) and stamina is not an overiding nescessity.
O'l Skip has earned the right to take what he legally can take,
whether we agree or not. I ve been on a roll since early September and every fish I caught is still swimming (hopefully) but that is my choice. It's a long winter and some people really love to eat striped bass though I don't know why, I would take a flounder or haddock anyday over bass.
Now, I have to go pour some more Peroxide over my hands, they resemble hamburger more than attached digits.
piemma 10-11-2009, 07:49 AM Flap, I agree with everything you said. I haven't killed anything in the canal this year.
I ran into 2 jamokes last night that had 3 fish and there wasn't one over 28". I was just releasing a17#er and they were agast that I would put back a fish that "big". They had no idea of what was going on and actually asked me if I thought the fish was over 30#.
The facts are that the vast majority of the guys fishing everywhere (but the canal in particular because of the easy access) have never seen a 30# never mind caught one.
Everyone is entitled to there opinion on keeping fish. I make it a practice of not killing anything under 20# and then only enough for family and a few friends who like to grill it.
Me? I'd rather eat cod any day.
Crafty Angler 10-11-2009, 08:37 AM ...Me? I'd rather eat cod any day.

I'm with you, Paul
Blackfish...
BEETLE 10-11-2009, 10:03 AM Not for nothing - I've seen Skip @ the club - yes, again nice guy.
Not to incite a $^!#storm here, but I think he "may" have kept the fish for the club derby, it is a placing fish.... and i'm sure for consumption as well.
Me, I prefer cod as well... Majority of bass caught 95%- released. only keep derby or tournament grade fish and what will be eaten.
This is all good reading:lurk:
I think the problem with the inconsistency of fish being caught its driving most of us crazy,we are all looking for where & when to fish, but with one person posting of decent fish being landed it starts the flare ups on the blabber net :rumble:
I just hope that this years fall run isn't a complete wash out and that we all can get out there and enjoy the end of yet another great year of fishing.
5/0
ProfessorM 10-11-2009, 08:46 PM me too Bob. I really don't mind not getting fish. I just enjoy being able to be out there and seeing guys get fish, doesn't have to be me but once in a while would be nice. Friday I couldn't not hook up and today they just came up and touched the plugs gently and laughed at my offerings.

Down on Cape here we call what you have "the stink" and you seem to have it bad. Not much hope what with the season winding down and all. You have to do penance.
First you must release all your eels back to freedom, second you must call Numbskull and profess the past ignorance of your ways and ask forgiveness for allowing your soul to be tempted and snapped up by the wily demon serpent. You see, in a way, you have been cast out of the garden and from now on you will feel the nakedness of an eel fisherman not as a producer of big fish but as a pox, a wretched curse. You are in the same predicament as a teenager, about to go out on a date with the prettiest girl in his class out but suddenly breaks out in a horrible case of acne with large festering boils about his face and neck the day before.
You have the stink on you bad, the only cure I know of would be a yellow darter half tide down where I was last night. Then you may come to find the inner peace that Numby and I experienced as we left with fish still taking because we had already taken enough and it was getting too repetitive and decided to try somewhere where the fishing was a bit more "challenging".
Seek Numbskull's guidance and accept the way of the plug into your life, it's your only hope.
If not..... get drunk.:uhuh:
Back Beach 10-12-2009, 09:51 AM ^
Be careful Flap, by simply quoting my text and inserting it into your post you may be implicated into this mess. This isn't the flu, its a social thing. I can only hope Numby's presence is enough to serve as your firewall.
Now go, both of you, and cleanse yourselves in a strong solution of terpentine, white primer, and snake urine while there's still time. Be sure to get the bottoms of your feet good as I may have inadvertently set foot in your spot.

Only you can say it like I feel it is...and get away with it. I've watched Skip kill everything 28.1" and over all summer long from his perch. He always has an excuse. Point blank I asked him what the hell he was going to do with all the meat, while Numbskull was enabling the situation by carrying out the fish. I confess I carried out a few for him also, until I gradually learned he always has an excuse.
BTW: re the three car accident that Skip and Numby caused on Friday morning: the first car stopped and was trying to make a left turn. The second car was oogling the fish as Numby stepped out of the woods and was trying to look between the cars. The third car driver was either blind or was texting because he just absolutely demoished himself into the second car. Another reason not to kill a great fish at that age.
Sea Dangles 10-13-2009, 07:30 PM I don't think an excuse is necessary to kill fish over 28".They make great fertilizer as well as a tasty meal. This thread jumped the shark when the kill was posted.I hope the old codger kills whatever makes him happy.Sauerkraut,I expect to see your shadow this week.
numbskull 10-13-2009, 07:36 PM Skip has helped me a lot and, more than the fishing, is a major reason I've enjoyed my infrequent forays to the canal. I'm sorry this thread ended up critical of him. I had meant the post to honor him and inspire others to fish. I'd carry his fish again.

Sorry, too strong. A few hrs. earlier, I fielded a phone call from brother Don in N.J., about a lifelong surf friend who is selling his legally caught bass out of his trunk to the Green Cards and Para Illegals at his retirement place of work. Guess I'm just bummed by my bad fishing, and anybody I feel threatens it further.
If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.
BigFish 10-14-2009, 03:30 PM Well thats not right! My only point Alan was he is within his rights....I also do not agree with keeping everything you catch! I only keep a few myself each season!
agsurfr 10-14-2009, 04:21 PM I am new to this board and relatively new to surf casting. I have enjoyed my stay so far. Spent one night at the canal last weekend--caught three small fish (all released) and left with a smile.
What are your thoughts about a slot limit, for example, in an attempt to conserve the big egg filled cows, we limit the keepers to those under 36 or 38 inches and above 48 inches. This method is used commonly in freshwater management. I guess if you could allow 30 pounders up to say 45 pounders to continue to reproduce instead of harvesting those fish you'd have a better hatch. Killing a 28" bass does not have the same effect on the future population that killing a large female does. Of course I would be hard pressed to release a 45lb fish or even a 35 lb fish as I've not caught one that large. Sigh...
Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance for your thoughts.

numbskull 10-14-2009, 06:23 PM Welcome to the site.
Search on "slot limits" and you'll find an earful.
I suspect people may be reluctant to rehash all that, however.
davisd 10-14-2009, 10:06 PM :confused:Leave Skip alone. I would be more than happy to help him carry his fish too.
ProfessorM 10-15-2009, 07:56 AM Not much, nothing, happening last nite for me with an eelskin conrad. Didn't run into many either which was surprising with such a nice nite, except for the cold. Home by 11 with frozen feet.
JohnR 10-15-2009, 08:04 AM AG - welcome to S-B.
I'm up for a slot limit. In fact, I'm up for a 30% reduction all across the board; Recreational, R&R Comm, and the trap boys.
Cutting the Rec take 30% will ease a lot of fish, cutting the comm 30% will stop a lot of whining :rotf2:
Seriously, we have Amendment 6 that is supposed to kick in with a big drop in the fishery so if that happens, sure hope we see it. Otherwise, I'd be OK with a 30% reduction anyway. Still gotta protect the forage fish though.
Hey, maybe Obama can come out with forage redistribution too. I'd support that.
One pogie for you, one for him, 4 for the guvmint, one for you, one for...

Am I crazy or, with the post DaveS put up about the Block and how good it was, did these fish go by already????

I suspect the fish getting hammered on BI right now are the southern mass that only got as far as the south shore of Cutty this year (and accounted for the great late summer fishery they had). The northern mass of fish has partially gone past, but I hope there are still more in CCB (the post from PI was encouraging) or off the outer cape yet to go. It is the southern mass (or the tail end of the spring migration) that I think used to summer off the outer cape, but now hang up in the triangle between BI, Narragansett, and Squibnocket these days. Those fish are long gone for us.
piemma 10-15-2009, 01:40 PM WOW! Interesting and well thought out theory.
Moses 10-17-2009, 03:06 PM Barren wasteland down there this morning. End to end and didn't see anyone catching
UserRemoved1 10-17-2009, 03:37 PM Well I will say one thing to add fuel to this thread... Yesterday M was lit up like fireworks on the 4th of July...I watched a guy drag a nice 40 lber off the beach. The surf was about 10' and the water looked like chocolate milk...but man was there birds workin sandeels like no tomorrow. Didn't even fish just walked out and looked for a few because I was very time pressed.
And numby I think you are spot on. I think the run is very much on time this year based on what I'm seeing and hearing from all the shops. I think alot of the fish are long gone down south. I think they started moving a month or more ago cuz that's when Jersey started seeing fish on the beaches.
Alot of my spots in western CT that produced well in September are totally dead. It seemed like the fish were moving hard in the last half of Sept, and that body of fish is gone. That being said, Rhody and Eastern CT are starting to heat up quite a bit. Hope they move my way...
Striper_Haven_03 10-17-2009, 07:33 PM Its just begun here in Plymouth. We have beached our 4 biggest of the year the past 5 days. ALL these fish (all of which were 40+lbs) were mixed in much smaller fish....16"-40".
Water is still super warm. Its definetly not over by any means.
If you tell yourself its over, well, it is, because you convinced yourself of that and probably wont fish.

Today at his perch. Then we both trotted (yes, he can still give himself a stress test on site if there is a potential fish to be had) east for about 30 poles following the birds. We spent a lot of time and a lot of casts. Including my tiny fish, I only saw about four others similar taken until I quit at 9:30 AM.
We were hoping the Canal season would close with a BANG. Another 48 hours of easterly winds already firing now may kill the opportunity.
I can't figure this moody Ditch out; but I have only been trying for this my second year.
DaveS 10-23-2009, 02:24 PM I think they started moving a month or more ago cuz that's when Jersey started seeing fish on the beaches.
We really aint seeing too much here yet Scott, a few fish here and there, and while I did have a decent evening last night there really are no large numbers of fish around NJ yet. Hopefully soon, but not yet.
If I was the Rhody boys, I would not put your gear away anytime soon, same for the Montauk/LI fellas either.

you aren't alone A. I've been doing it over 20 years and I'm still stupid most of the time and I have a who's who list of moles. It is a long stretch and choosing the right spot is crucial most times. I got my first semi decent fish today after fishing every morning this week with 100's of casts and a lot of dinks while a mile away they had some real good action yesterday, where I was most of the earlier week. I stayed all the way till noon today when the birds finally sat down. There was way more bait than fish today. Birds are eating good. Except for the one Slingha murdered.:)

ProfessorM 10-27-2009, 07:52 AM I was there yesterday for the change and didn't make a cast but I heard it has been on tail end of west, if at all, last few days. Not giving up yet. I'll stick it out for next set of tides and if then it is dead I may be done with canal for this year. I'm talking plugging here.
BigFish 10-27-2009, 07:56 AM I am just about done...pitiful! :wall::wall::wall::wall:

Bronko 10-27-2009, 06:36 PM Threw eels there for 5 hours last night for one dink and one swing and miss. There was bait in there at dusk but didn't hear or see a fish break all night once the sun went down. Fished a few spots known to be productive fall spots. Only other person I saw was an SBer who I fish with now and again... nice fishing with you again Bob!
